Regional General Manager headwinds and while politically New Zealand has stabilized,
Oceania Australia stills faces a high level of flux and uncertainty.
This political uncertainty in Australia is affecting business
investment decisions as we’ve all experienced in 2017.

Healthcare, Food & Beverage as well as specific areas in other Industry Sectors all
performed well in 2017 and Spirax continued to support them through trade show,
conference and symposium sponsorship as well as maybe even more importantly
from an applied knowledge and field operational support perspective.

Energy consumption optimisation and emission reduction programs within the steam
loop across multiple industry sectors and customers were our leading successes in
2017 with more to come. These solutions require far more than just products and rely
on cooperation and knowledge transfers to generate the best results for everyone.

With oil forecast to enter a rising price cycle in 2018 and reduced electrical capacity
versus demand in critical summer and winter periods focusing on energy
consumption optimization will rise in importance as 2018 progresses. International
agreements on whole of country carbon emission reduction require all industries to
increase their focus on process improvements and wherever possible multiple uses
of the one energy generation cycle or in steam terms everything from flash recovery,
continual steam system audits, correct steam distribution policies and water
treatment practices are now a must do. This is a broad scope of needs and very few
firms can provide a one-stop shop covering all of these key areas but, well that is just
what Spirax Sarco does and has done for over 100 years.

A HIGH EFFICIENCY COST SAVING SOLUTION

Maximise returns from your chemical water treatment

In this month’s issue we discuss the advantages of recovering heat energy from flash steam to minimise
operating costs. So, is there an impact on the chemical water treatment regime? When heat is recovered it
is generally transferred into the feedwater system. This makes for more efficient heating of feedwater and
an effective reduction of fuel consumed to produce steam.

BOILER WATERFEEDWATER TEMPERATURE AND

Increasing the temperature of boiler feed water has several advantages;
such as better boiler operation, a reduction in thermal shock and often an increase
in steam quality is achieved as well.

Traditionally, steam is direct injected to the feed tank to Spirax Sarco’s heat recovery systems are able to extract the

As water is heated the gases dissolved within it become less soluble and are

An important part of any boiler water treatment program is an There are some important implications to raising the feed

BOILER BLOWDOWN HEAT RECOVERY

Increase energy efficiency and cut costs by recovering heat
and water from TDS blowdown

Steam boilers need to be blown down to control the level of dissolved
solids (TDS) in the boiler water. Usually, a TDS system opens a valve to
discharge boiler water when the conductivity rises above a pre-set limit.
Relatively low TDS feedwater then replaces the discharged boiler water.

How the system works
Steam flashes from the blowdown water in the flash vessel and is fed
directly back to the feedtank. A float trap drains the residual water
which, if still hot, is fed into a heat exchanger to warm the circulating
cold make-up water.

User benefits
Recovery of up to 80% of heat from the blowdown water.
Reduces the requirement for expensive treated make-up water.
Reduces the temperature of blowdown water for safer disposal.
Rapid pay-back from complete package.

FLASH RECOVERY ENERGY
MANAGEMENT EQUIPMENT –
FREME

Spirax FREME Is an innovative heat recovery system that
delivers major energy savings by recovering waste heat
from a condensate return system and using it to pre-heat
boiler feedwater.
Heat and water previously lost can be effectively recovered,
reducing utility bills, water treatment chemical costs and
CO2 emissions.
Spirax FREME is proven to be able to achieve energy
savings of up to 26% giving a potential return on
investment within months.

A large manufacturing plant in Victoria, Australia

Steam users, large and small, are becoming increasingly aware of the
environmental impact and costs associated with waste steam being vented
to atmosphere. The visual effect of plumes of vented steam is also thought to
have an effect on the buying behaviours of the growing number of
environmentally conscious consumers.

For these reasons, a large food manufacturing plant in Victoria decided to take action by
installing an EVC4 on a condensate return pump package. Boiler feedtank water is circulated through the
EVC, which enables the flash steam generated from high temperature condensate to be condensed, drained
back into the package, and returned to the boilerhouse. The result is a significant saving on the fuel bill.
Boiler feedwater chemical costs are also reduced, since most condensate can now be returned to the boiler
instead of some this being lost to the environment through the package vent pipe.
