The Pines Party 2016 Journal

The Pines Party 2016 Journal

Keywords: The Pines Party 2016 Journal

Dear Bambi Sue

I have a new boyfriend and we are about to take our first dream vacation together, you know the kind where
you are not going to worry about the money and we just want to have a magical fun time but we don’t want
to go on another gay cruise.

We like to dance to great music and being naughty boys but there is an age difference and we also like to
mellow out, especially me, as I am the older one.

Now don’t make fun of me but I have lived in NYC for about 10 years and I have never been to Fire Island, I
have heard good things about it and I am wondering if you think my new BF and I will have a good time? We
like to get crazy but I don’t want to be stuck in a totally programed environment, I’d like some time to read a
book while he will dance for 3 days in a row. What do you think is the most exciting weekend out there for
guys like us?

We Have to Believe There is Magic!

Dear All Over The World,

Honey, if magic is what you believe in, there is no place more fantastic than Fire Island especially on PINES
PARTY weekend. Girl what rock have you been living under for the past 10 years? This is not just some
colonial village that is gay friendly, this is THE PINES, I’ll be guiding you.

It was a place no body dared to go until the early 1950’s, by the early 60’s it was well on its way to becoming
the premier, gay fantasy but what we made is real. There is an other worldliness about it that will give you
everything you are looking for. The Pines has been kissed by a muse. Dreams are made and nurtured here.

The endless night sky twinkles with millions of stars, like a stunning light show over our tiny town. Bracketed
by 2 shorelines, the crash of the ocean creates the feeling you are floating on earth’s edge and the shimmer
of distant lights 3 miles across the bay, keeps the world at a safe distance. By day the sun, sand and ocean
fragranced air lets you feel suspended in time.

Pines Party is an outcropping of The Morning Party, among the first fundraisers for GMHC when the gay
community really needed to believe that magic was possible and miracles are what we needed. Now we raise
money for a number of gay organizations and the Pines Community.

The theme this year is Xanadu and it could not be more appropriate. Xanadu, was described by Maroco
Polo in 1298 as a the summer capital of the Chinese Emperor Kubla Kahn, part of which could be moved
and recreated to enjoy spectacular locations, then in 1797 the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem Kubla Kahn,
describes his vision of Xanadu, as a magical pleasure dome. The Pines is Gay Xanadu (populated by Queens
rather than Emperors).
More recently Xanadu was a fabulous 1980 star-studded flop cult movie (if you haven’t heard of it, put this
letter done now and cancel your trip) and a well-received Broadway musical (if you missed it you’re still in).

The main event is the result of people who follow their dreams and make things just appear. It is a fitting
parallel to the ancient pleasure dome, the fantasy dance club along the ocean shore rises for just one night to
inspire dreams and desires then disappears, not unlike a muse in Greek mythology but with Glitz! Sounds like
total insanity, but only if you think it is!

Kira aka Terpsichore is the muse of dance, is especially celebrated in the Xanadu movie and musical. Kira
teaches us that dreams are best accomplished through collaboration, this party embodies the collaborative
nature of this little town where residents, contractors, vendors and visitors all volunteer to build, staff and
entertain those who come to revel in the magical dance. The artistry of the affair will amaze you. People of
the Pines party have been truly kissed by a muse!

There is plenty to keep your marathon dancer boyfriend busy, a circuit Queens schedule of Go Gurl events,
cocktails and dancing at magnificent water side homes, bathhouse parties, a friendly local gay club, exclusive
house party, come one come all cocktails, quiet dinners with intimate friends, bar-b-q’s, a packed at 1:45AM
Pizza parlor, nature walks, naked hot tub parties, sea side tanning , frolicking in the rugged ocean waves,
kayaking along the bay, illusive sex parties, nap time, midnight pool parties, high, low and middle tea dance,
then a spectacular all night dance on the beach but you can also walk along the shores that stretches as far as
you can see or curl up with a good book under an umbrella on silky white sand or next to a tranquil pool.

At the beach party, the only markers of time will be sunset and sunrise. We will feel like everybody in the world
is coming out tonight where elders and new comers to the community are welcomed with equal enthusiasm.
The whole weekend is like an elusive fantasy romance, where your young boyfriend and you can dream all your
dreams, let the music and magic of the evening sweep you away, you don’t need all the answers as you will have
feelings you never had before. Let your imagination roam, the dream is big enough for both of you.

Often just one visit to the Pines, is like falling in love, a special attachment will take root. Once you have been
there the Pines will never set you free, but just close your eyes and the Pines is where you are. For those of us
with those feelings, even when we are away from the Pines, we’re never far, in our hearts.

Come Dream With Us In Xanadu!

XANADU DJ PROFILES

Sunset Magic: VIP Kick-Off Cocktails

Jeff Hall: I’m thrilled to be a part of this year’s 2016 Pines Party. For me, the

Pines Party, and the Friday night VIP party in particular, have always felt like a
community block party. There’s a sense of a shared experience here in the Pines
that knits the community together in ways that not many other communities
can relate to, and that makes this event and all of the people who make it
possible something very special. I’ll be opening this year’s VIP party with a
throwback vinyl set and then handing over the decks to DJ Aaron Aanenson
who will be making his second appearance at this year’s 2016 Pines Party -
Xanadu!

Aaron Aanenson: Aaron’s love affair with house music began at an early

age in the 90s after being Introduced to electronic dance music by the local
radio station and greater gay community in Scottsdale, AZ. At 18 Aaron moved
to New York City to pursue his dreams and further realize a future in electronic
music. His first nightlife experience was with what became his greatest inspiration,
Peter Rauhofer, in 2006 at the WORK! party. His appreciation for all forms of
electronic music influence his music style, which is intended to move audiences
along a journey, regardless of venue or setting. It his his firm belief that music
should evoke an emotional response.

Physical: The Pool Party

DJ Dawson: One of the most acclaimed fresh-faces on the scene, DJ Dawson

is turning heads and moving feet with his stand out mixes that seamlessly
blend punching house rhythms and soulful vocals with current and future
electronic sounds. Known best for his incredible range of appeal, Dawson has
impressed the most discerning tastes, from the NYC Underground to the Global
Mainstream. His refreshing beats energize yet soothe crowds with a style that is
unique among the club world’s elite. Quickly catching the attention of leading
nightlife brands, he performs regularly at major events across the nation with
major brands such as Matinée, Masterbeat and Supermartxé featured in New York,
Las Vegas, LA, Miami, Pines Party in Fire Island, and Palm Springs Pride to name a
few.

Pines Party: XANADU

The Carry Nation: The Carry Nation is an NYC based team comprised of Will

Automagic & Nita Aviance. Both noted producers and DJs on their own, their
collaboration brings to life a unique and singularly exciting modern sound
that is both rooted in New York house history and reflective of the new
burgeoning underground sound. They can be found at their own monthly
warehouse party (appropriately titled “The Carry Nation”) deep in Brooklyn, as
well as guest spots around New York and the world.

Morabito: Morabito has graced every major club and sound system in NYC,

including Twilo, Roxy, Tunnel, Sound Factory, Limelight, Palladium, Roseland,
Cielo, Pacha, Webster Hall, XL and Stage Forty8. Her musical reach extends to
gigs in Tokyo, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Milan, Amsterdam and across New
York s cultural landscape, where she created the soundscapes to many must-
attend galas by Calvin Klein, American Ballet Theater, Louis Vuitton, Gucci,
Sotheby’s, Martha Stewart, Anna Wintour and Robert Isabel. Morabito was
also the musical director for the fashion world’s most luminous event, The
Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit gala tribute to icon
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Supernova: The Morning Party

Peter Napoli: Born on Long Island, NY into a family of musicians, DJ Peter

Napoli’s love of music began at a very early age. Inspired by a variety of
energetic beats and rhythms, Peter found his passion of music leading him
towards the art of DJing and producing. DJ Peter Napoli is known for his
ability to spin numerous styles of House music and enjoys introducing people
to sounds they’ve never heard. With his eclectic taste and experimental beat
blends, you will always recognize the sound of DJ Peter Napoli.

The Community Pharmacy That Cares

July 1, 2016

It is with a sense of gratitude and pride that I write to thank the Fire Island Pines community and
the supporters of the Pines Party for all that you have done—both for the LGBT community and for
Lambda Legal.

I have the great honor of succeeding Kevin Cathcart as the new Chief Executive Officer of Lambda Legal.
I have known Kevin for most of my adult life, as a colleague, friend and mentor. My first job in the LGBT
movement was actually at Lambda Legal. Working here set me on the path of becoming a lawyer, and in
many ways, this is truly a homecoming.

Our organization, like many in the LGBT community, was incubated and nurtured by the pioneering spirit of
men and women who dared to fight for the full equality of all LGBT people and those living with HIV. Just as
I ask where I would be if it not for Lambda Legal, I also ask where the LGBT community and Lambda Legal
would be without the passionate support of the Pines.

You, our friends in the Pines, have made it possible for Lambda Legal’s work to touch upon every facet of
LGBT lives. Your financial support has allowed us to hire the brightest minds in the legal world – currently,
with more than 300 years of collective LGBT civil rights experience. As we have learned, both from past
challenges and more recently from the tragedy in Orlando, the hate, bigotry, and fear directed at our
community does not stop.

Our work ahead is both necessary and thrilling. We need to end discrimination
everywhere in America, and to fight it wherever it happens, be it at work, at school,
or on the sidewalk outside your front door. We must make sure that marriage
equality is real and accessible and that our children and partners are protected
from cradle to grave. We must protect EVERY member of our community,
especially our most vulnerable.

I pledge to you that Lambda Legal will remain in the fight until all LGBT people
and those living with HIV are accepted in full. I look forward to meeting you,
whether in the Pines, New York City, or across the country, as we start the next
great chapter together.

With gratitude,

Rachel B. Tiven
Chief Executive Officer, Lambda Legal

HAPPY PINES PARTY

LOVE, JAY & MARC + YUKI PRODUCTIONS

All of us at Guy Smith Productions
wish everyone a healthy and magical
Pines Party 2016. We hope you like what

we’ve made togetheR.
Lets party!

Xanadu, though it might have been an awful film in execution, had a universally inspiring story. The concept was about
three main characters: A young artist with a vision, an older band leader with a dream, and the mythical muse, daughter
of Zeus, who was the lover and inspiration for them both. She was beautiful, magical, unattainable – she lived in a mural.
The men were mortal and clumsy, but elevated by the strength and zeal of their passion for music. Together, they made
a deal, and collaborated on the most incredible of all discotheques: something bright, full of light and music; spanning the
ages to appeal to dancers of all ages and origins. But it was a moment in time, evanescent, and upon the opening, the
muse and her sisters disappeared… never to be seen again.

Everything is transitory – even the Pan Pacific Auditorium which was the location for Xanadu was destroyed by a raging
fire a few years after the film. Our island is a lot like that Xanadu – full of music and magical creatures, and so delicate
and fleeting. We don’t really know from one year to the next if our island will be the same, or will even exist. We live in
the moment and we live full out, experiencing all the joy and dance each moment can supply.

When I was nine, a child of psychologists, growing up in Tennessee in the late seventies, I had no idea about
contemporary music. My parents played classical music at home, or sometimes folk, and I took classes in piano. One
summer the old movie palace in our neighborhood was playing a film about a nightclub, and disco, and new wave, and
big band, and Olivia Newton John, and when I saw it, my life changed. I decided right then that I would create the most
spectacular dance club in the world, and it would be magic.

A theme of the Xanadu film was about the coming together of different decades of dance music into a single magical
moment in 1980: The Big Band Swing past, [Gene Kelly], the Disco present [Electric Light Orchestra] and the New
Wave future [The Tubes] – essentially saying that they were the same force, working together to move souls. Now
Disco is the elder statesman of our Pines dance community, here on the beach, melding with Techno and Tech House,
spanning four decades and the future of music.

Music has the power to transport as nothing else does in human consciousness. From the early history of human
settlements, people have gathered in the dark, in a cave, or a sweat lodge, and huddled around a fire of some kind, and
listened to the rhythm of drums together and danced and were transported. Later, the bass swell of a pipe organ and
a thousand candles, and the colored light of stained glass filled us with the love and fear of a great god that ruled our
world, but also loved us and brought us together as one. Then, in the dawning age of disco, all around the world, the
newly emerging tribe of gay men invented their own spiritual conclave – the discotheque, with the priest presiding over
metal wheels and controlling a huge sound system. That was our new church – where we felt free, and felt a part of
something much bigger than ourselves, and a part of one strong and loving living mass of energy and humanity. After all
we had been though – outcast and despised by many of the same religions that gave our own families strength, this was
the strongest feeling of all – a spirit that was our own.

I felt that feeling the moment I first set foot in a gay dance club. It was a small one, in Boston, but I knew that it was
something I wanted to be part of, to help create. I rang the buzzer on the door of that club the next morning until
someone showed up for work, and I was deeply honored that they offered me $5.50 an hour to vacuum the catwalks
and run errands.

Twenty-five years later, it is an enormous honor to be a key part of this amazing group of close friends and family,
especially my husband Robert, that has made this magic happen, here on a beach in my favorite place in the world, the
Fire Island Pines. I have traveled widely and have yet to experience a place where everything that is extraordinary,
creative, dramatic, and extravagant about the gay community is so beautifully concentrated.

I have put all of my heart and soul into this Pines Party, and I hope you feel the joy, and the spirit, and the one-ness I feel
when you attend. Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

Yours forever,
Guy Smith, creative director and producer
