IF YOU CAN SEE WHAT I CAN SEE…
You Might Be Riding On The Back of a Harley

Durango, Colorado Durango
Harley
This trip was amazing. We rode fast, far, had fun, and we took time to stop
and see the sights along the way. Three bikes, four people, eight days, Four Corners
2,580 miles. Much of the ride took us on roads where we looked out at a
wide open sky and could see as far as our eyes could see. I don’t think ‘cagers’
understand just what it is that bikers love about being on the bike. Yes, it is the
wind in your face, the weather, the sights, and even the smells. Definitely your
senses are heightened and we become more aware of our surroundings.

Our trip to Colorado started out as a plan to ride to the Four Corners
Motorcycle Rally over Labor Day weekend. One person backed out, another
wanted a different plan, others just wanted to ride, and so it goes that plans
got changed. We were now focused on attending the Bike Week kickoff event
known as the Cycle Tribe Crawfish Boil. Who really needs a reason to ride to
Durango, Colorado anyway?

With a travel plan, hotel reservations secured along the way, and a lot of
miles to cover each day, we set our leave time at 6am, making sure to get out of
Sacramento before the early morning rush hour traffic. The weather was nice,
just a bit cool. Our first surprise was how cold it became as we reached Donner
Summit. Sweatshirts were not enough to keep us warm. Yet, none of us asked
the group to pull over so we could put on another layer of clothing. By the time
we ate breakfast and left Reno, the morning had warmed up. Along the way,
we noticed many ‘unique’ vehicles being driven or trailered. Clearly it was also
Burning Man Week.

Getting out of California, we were very aware of the sharp drop in the price
of gasoline, and the quality of the roads. We crossed the border from Nevada
to Utah, leaving behind the beautiful brown mountains of Nevada. At first, we
were surrounded by lush beautiful green farms in Utah. Still on Hwy 50, known
as America’s Loneliest Highway, we traveled through mountains of the Great
Basin Area. We were treated to a most amazing show of color. The hot sun was
shining bright in the vibrant blue sky. The red rock mountains are bordered by
many green plants. In some ways this area reminds me of the Grand Canyon. It
seemed like Hwy 70 was built right through the valley of the canyon, so everyone
could truly enjoy the beauty. Each day after we checked into the hotel, we would
jump into the pool. We found this to be a very relaxing opportunity to enjoy each
other’s company, talk about what we saw and where we were going next.

Every day we were riding somewhere and doing something. We spent one

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 6

Zion Beauty

day riding through Arches National Park. Curt and I have been
there before. The first time we were so fascinated that we had
to hike out to see every famous arch. This time we sat and
watched people while Rick and Mike hiked the trails.

We have relatives that own the Rusty Shovel Saloon Million Dollar
in Durango, which is located in the same parking lot as Highway
Durango Harley-Davidson. Friday night was Bike Nite. Lots
of rubber burned on the asphalt and good pizza for dinner.
Coming back on another day for other Bike Week kickoff,
we ate at the Crawfish Boil, enjoyed the Bike and Corvette
Show, and laughed at the Slowest Motorcycle Races.
We rode to Silverton and visited the World’s Highest Harley
Store, at 9,318 feet elevation. We rode the Million Dollar
Highway at Ouray. I was actually afraid to ride on this famous
road. I believed the hype. It is known as one of the twelve most
dangerous roads on earth. Curt promised me he would be
careful. When we stopped to view the waterfall, I asked how
far to the Million Dollar Highway. He told me we just completed
it. I was surprised and relieved. Check that off the Bucket List!

We enjoyed the view as we rode outside the rim of the

Grand Canyon. We had fun at the Navajo Nation Four Corners

Monument at Tribal Parks. We walked in all four states:

Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. We stopped at the

Navajo National Monument in Arizona, where the canyons hide

the well preserved cliff dwellings of ancient Navajo people.

The cliff dwellings date back to 1300 A.D. I took the 1.5 mile

hike. I was amazed to see the dwellings that were carved into

the canyon so many years ago and to realize people once

lived there. When I thought the day couldn’t get any better,

we rode through Zion National Park. God’s creation on earth

is so amazing. Silverton Harley Davidson

We are members of the Veterans Memorial Tour of Honor

2019. We visited Zion Harley-Davidson and paid our respects at their Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Coming through the desert, one of the bikes got a flat back tire. Fortunately, there was cell phone service and
he was able to be towed to Tonopah, Nevada. The next day we found out there was no one available to fix the tire,

and no tow truck to tow the bike somewhere to be fixed. Smart thinking, the guys decided to buy
some tow straps and rent a truck. We were all on the road again, and spent half a day at Reno Harley-
Davidson having the tire replaced. Lastly, twenty miles from home, cruising along on the freeway, we
were told by the CHP to pull over. Fortunately, when we pulled over he turned the lights on and went
after someone else. Welcome home to California! If you see us riding on the road, come ride with us.

right off the main drag. Some morning traffic noise, but not too bad
considering our room faced the street.

Next morning, after a great breakfast, we headed back down

the hill, stopping at the Stonehouse Tavern & Restaurant (www.
stonehousetavern.com) in Auberry for a little refreshment. From

there we took the back roads down to Pine Flat Lake. Kind of a
long dragon-shaped body of water, really pretty and not crowded.
We kicked it for a bit up on a knoll overlooking the lake. Could
have camped out there for a day or two. E. Trimmer Road took us
down into the valley, while presenting us with some great views of
the lake. We turned north outside of Riverbend and made our way
back to Auberry by way of Watts Valley Road. This flatland valley
ride was pretty darn nice. Rolling hills, scrub oaks sprinkled among
huge cattle farms.

Since we were going to spend the night in Oakhurst, we stopped
back in Bandit Town to pick up our wrist bands for the party. The

Yosemite Sierra Inn (www.yosemitesierrainn.com) would be our

spot for the night. After resting for a while, we went up the street to
DiCicco’s for dinner. Can’t pass up Italian! From there, it was off
to the bash. Whitey Morgan put on a great show, as usual. If you
like good-ole-boy country rock, check him out. Hyped up from the
concert, we really enjoyed the easy night ride back to Oakhurst.

In the morning, it was time to git on home, so we jumped on SR41
and headed out. On the way we did make a little side trip to Jackson’s
Roadhouse (www.jacksons-roadhouse.com) off Millerton Road in
Clovis. A biker friendly place with live music on the weekends. It
was an afternoon acoustic performance the day we stopped in. BTW,
if you are into jerky, the attached store has all kinds of wild game
choices. Later!

we organized a group of

I found this gem a few years ago and we love the opportunity
to share it with you all any chance we get. This resort offers
authentic railroad cabooses as your room, each one with
feather beds and its own individual theme. All of which are very
well done and make a cozy place to end your day.

Usually we lead a group in November, so this happened to be
our first stay here during the summer time. It was a special treat
because our hosts, Paul and June had the swimming pool ready
for us to enjoy after a day of riding. After a nice meal by the dock
at the Boathouse Bar & Restaurant on the Lake which is an easy
walk down the road - our group jumped at the chance to hang out

our country. We were invited to bring our group by Tony

quite surprised at the size of this event. It attracts quite the
turnout of custom and vintage transportation of all kinds, it
is definitely worth checking out if you are into any of these
modes of transport and you just might get inspired into a
whole new direction of interest here. It was a gorgeous day
hanging out in Lakeport, but the sun was getting hot so we
all collectively decided it was time to get back to that Nice

The party went on way into the late evening before one by

It was another fun filled TRM NorCal weekend in the books.
If you would like to join us on one of these adventures - make
sure to follow us on Facebook at Stan-Terri Hill where we will
announce our next getaway adventure! Our objective is to fill
the getaway resort with fun loving peeps - so jump on board early
to come with us to some of our favorite Nor Cal ride destinations.

This bike was constructed as a remembrance and tribute
to my father (Joe) and his brothers (John and Charley).
The three brothers were WWII veterans and members of
“The Greatest Generation”. All three brothers owned Harley-
Davidson motorcycles at the same time in the 1940’s. They all
rode together which, at many times, would progress into a race
between the three of them. Other times, when the three were
riding together, they would start competing against each other
doing stunts like who could ride the farthest at highway speeds
while standing upright on the seat with the throttle locked. The
“Rath Boys” were renowned for their love of Harley-Davidson
motorcycles. They would share their miles of bike stories freely
and easily with family and friends at any time while reliving the
memories of their adventures once again. You could tell by
the sparkle in their eyes and their huge smiles as they indulged
in enjoyable recollection of their younger lives. Rest well,
Gentlemen. Our blood is the same and your names are on my
Harley. Let’s ride!
