RIDE DESTINATION:
Lake Hughes - Castaic - Ojai

Castaic Lake

So, this month’s Rock Inn
adventure takes us
down to Southern
California. Actually, we

travelled down there twice

in a three-week period. The

first time was a Disneyland

trip with the family. The

second time was for my

50-year High School reunion.

Wait a minute……did I

see 50? Must be a typo!

Anyway, we had a blast

both times. On the second

trip, we took a couple of Granddaughter Gave Us

riding around Castaic.

There’s certainly plenty of twisty asphalt to choose from.

Lots of mountain canyons, lakes and other sights to see.

After a most of the day putt, we had pulled into Gorman in Quail Lake
the afternoon, and checked into the Studio 6 Motel. Not a

bad place, reasonable rates with two pretty nice restaurants Lake Hughes and the Rock Inn (www.historicrockinn.com) for

Next morning, gassed up, we headed out of town on the Some of the spookiest trees you’ll find. Dead and all snarly.

up the street a bit is the

conditions. The camp is full of fun activities especially

designed for these children. One of the nicest parts of the

Painted Turtle is that there are no costs involved for the

families. Yes, free of charge! Over 3,000 special needs

children and their families participate each year. Seems like

a wonderful place. Unfortunately, the day we stopped by was

not a visitor day, so we were unable to enter the property.

Might be worth a trip again just to see the camp.

With our hearts a little heavier, we continued up the road. In
Green Valley, Spunky Canyon, and Bouquet Canyon Roads
will wind you out and around the reservoir. A real pretty ride.
Down away on Bouquet Canyon, we pulled over at Rooster’s
Relics. Iconic little place that sells various kinds of old signs,
weld art and collectibles. A pleasant and interesting stop.

We turned off at Copper Hill Road and San Francisquito
Road took us back to Lake Hughes. (BTW, Lake Hughes is
now dry. Prolonged drought and depletion due to wildfires
took its toll). A second stop at the Rock Inn, this time for
lunch, was in the cards. Probably the best pulled pork we’ve
had, if you’re not too tired of pulled pork yet. The BBQ
sauce has a little kick to it and their fries will rival any thin
cuts around. Next, Lake Hughes Road gives up some fine
scenery as it slides through the canyons and down alongside
Castaic Lake. Lake Hughes Road terminates in Castaic
and that’s where we would crash for the night. The Castaic
Inn, specifically (www.castaicinn.com). A little fancier than
the Studio 6, but still reasonable. Continental breakfast is
included, and you have easy freeway access.

Street Vibrations SPRING RALLY

June 8 (Reno, Nevada): With limited time on our schedule, we decided
to make a early morning blast up Interstate 80 over to Reno for this
annual spring event. It struck me as we rolled over the summit that it was
June and there was enough snow up there that you might have thought
it looked more like it was January - with the exception that we were not
freezing our butts off! Once we rolled into downtown Reno, we were
pleasantly surprised that it appeared that there were more bikes in town
than in previous years. We have often thought that the Spring Rally could
be as big as the Fall Rally especially with its fairly predictable weather this
time of year. As we walked through downtown there were vendors lining

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

the streets and most every corner had a stage with a band playing bringing
a continuous flow of live music to the venue. Later we rolled over to see
the busy Reno Harley-Davidson who also just happened to be celebrating
its One Year anniversary with its new owners so we joined in for a while and
celebrated with them before pointing our front wheel to the sky and heading

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:

V-Twin SAE 20W-50 Fullsynth Oil

Ravenol Synthetic Oil is the real deal! When I was Article and photos contributed by Dan Rogers
asked to do a product review about Ravenol Synthetic
Oil for motorcycles, I was thinking how in the hell do Contact MMI Vehicle Systems for more information at
you tell the difference between synthetic oils? Oil is oil - it’s (925) 831-4775 / www.mmivs.com
ALL the same! Boy was I wrong!

I have been riding for over 45 years and I put the oil in my
2004 Road King that has over 104,000 miles. After about 30
minutes, I could feel the difference. She ran a lot smoother,
cooler and I got better gas mileage. She use to get around
35 to 37 mpg after my ride, I checked it and was getting over
44 mpg.

I just couldn’t believe how good this oil is so I tried it in
my 2018 Milwaukee 8. My M8 only has about 5000 miles
on her. She does run a little hot, I guess that’s why Harley
made them to turn off the rear cylinder to help the motor cool
off when sitting in traffic or at a light. When I changed the
oil and put in the 20w-50 Ravenol Fullsynth oil, I noticed it
right away! This oil is amazing! It seemed to run better, more
power, and ran a lot cooler. I ran her for about 250 miles thru
the foothills and back to the Bay area on a hot day. The back
cylinder only turned off twice the whole day which is unheard
of, even my wife noticed the difference when she was riding
it. She also loved the bottles built-in pull out pour spout so
I won’t spill oil all over the pipes - which she always knows
when I do. A good friend of mine tried it in his Gilroy Indian
and said he noticed the difference too, his mirrors are not
shaking and he can see out of them now!

During my research, I found out in this country you only
have to have about 20% of synthetic in a product to be
called Fullsynth. In Germany where this oil is made, the
government regulates the oils. If it says fully synthetic - it
has to be 100% synthetic. In Europe, Ravenol is used in
racing bikes and cars and has been around a long time over
there. I’m going to be using it all the time now, it’s a little
more expensive but you’re getting the real deal.

Ravenol Motobike V-Twin 20w-50 Fullsynth is a high
grade, 3-in-1 lubricant for engine, drive and crank shaft that
is specially designed for air cooled motorcycles. Thanks
to its synthetic components and specifically attuned and
innovative additives; it is excellently suited for the demanding
engines drives and crank shafts of motorcycles.

IF YOU CAN SEE WHAT I CAN SEE…
You Might Be Riding On The Back of a Harley

NMS CNC Chapter NMS Folsom HOG
at Redwood Harley
North Meets South 2019

Curt and I usually take a long trip on the bike every year. With
vacation time limited, we decided to take multiple 3 or 4 day
trips this year. We looked forward to attending the 11th Annual
North Meets South H.O.G. event, hosted by California North Coast
(CNC) H.O.G. and Redwood Harley-Davidson in Eureka.

The first North Meets South (NMS) Event was held in 2008 in Redwood Harley
Medford, Oregon. This is a 3 day event that changes location each employee Nicole
year, and is hosted by the local H.O.G. Chapter where the event is Monath daugh-
held. Besides Oregon, NMS has been held in California, Nevada and ter of our friend
Washington. It is open to all H.O.G. Members. Angeliaa

We met up with a group of friends who were going to NMS in Leaving Shelter Cove
Redding. We planned ahead so we could all ride together. It was
a very hot day as we left Redding and rode through Shasta. The
area is still terribly devastated by last year’s Carr Fire. While riding
through Lewiston, we rode beside the Trinity River where everything
was beautiful, lush and green. Coming through Weaverville we could
see snow on the mountains ahead of us. What kind of weather should
we expect when we arrived in Eureka? I heard it was going to be cold
and wet.

We arrived at Redwood Harley-Davidson with just enough time
to check in and enjoy the BBQ provided. We received our swag
packages, with pins, patches and tee shirts, plus a schedule of
events, local information, and maps with directions for the planned
rides. We signed up to take a tour of the Avenue of the Giants on
Saturday and ride to Shelter Cove on Sunday. Before we could leave
Redwood Harley we introduced ourselves to one of Redwood Harley’s
friendly Service Department employees, Nicole Monath. Nicole is the
daughter of a local friend of ours, Angelia McCrary.

Up early the next day, we dressed in layers to handle mixed weather
conditions. Will it be hot or cold? We arrived at the dealership and
lined up for our ride. CNC had three Road Captains to guide us on the
ride through the beautiful California Coastal Redwoods. We had been
here a few times before, but never with locals who knew the area.
They safely lead us to the redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants
Highway. They patiently answered our questions as they informed us

We were up early again, for the last day of this event and
a ride to Shelter Cove. This time dressed in layers to handle
mixed weather conditions including rain. What’s a little
rain going to do besides get us wet? We had only been to
Shelter Cove once before and were looking forward to the

ride. Shelter Cove is a gateway access point to California’s

Lost Coast, Black Sands Beach and the Lost Coast Hiking

Trail. The road to Shelter Cove has many exciting twists and
turns. We frequently saw deer in the bushes at the edge of
the road. Fortunately they ran back into the bushes and not
onto the road. We were treated to brief views of the ocean as
we got closer. Arriving at the beach, we stopped to tour the
Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. This lighthouse was installed
in 1896 on a cliff of Mendocino. Taken out of service in 1971,
it fell into disrepair. By 1994 it was close to falling off the
cliff into the ocean. Locals wanting to save the history of the
Lighthouse organized a preservation society and succeeded
in their goal to move and restore the lighthouse to Shelter
Cove, only 35 miles from its original location. Cold and wet

2019 A BLISSFUL WEEKEND
TRROIPAPIDN’ IN POINT ARENA

THE ZEN HOUSE -
THE ART OF THE MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE SHOP

The Zen House (www.thezenhouse.net) welcomed motorcyclists
and guests on April 13th to their yearly Open
House exhibiting unique and rare European
motorcycles typically seen only in museums and
private collections. The Zen House event is a
destination event by my standards and is not your
typical day ride away from any major cities, although
with proper planning, navigating from the Bay Area
or Sacramento is doable in a single days ride.

The Zen House, located in the historic coastal
town of Point Arena, is about 90 minutes north of
Jenner along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) 1.
Riding the route along this Sonoma/Mendocino
coastline is one of the more spectacular rides you
will encounter in North America. The stretch of
road starting near Russian Gulch Beach will leave
you breathless as you near the summit. I highly
recommend you pull over to look back to survey the
twisting winding path traveled reaching the pinnacle
of this hill. As you stop and survey the countryside,
you might recognize this stunning
landscape in some very well-known
insurance television commercials
playing these days.

Continuing North up the coast past
the top of the grade, the distractions
are numerous along this highway,
with crashing waves lapping the
shoreline twisting and turning these
coastal cliffs, and I do mean cliffs…
the type that soaring birds appear out
of nowhere riding the thermals up the
bluffs at the edge of the road shooting
skyward. Another exciting obstacle
you may find in your path will be one
of the local bovines. Fortunately, no
cows were lumbering around on this
trip, but I have come across them on

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 20

previous jaunts through these hills. Word to the wise- they
don’t move, you go around them!

Motoring North along the Coast Hwy, a must stop location
is the infamous Stewarts Point Store, a local market operating
since 1881. Besides being the perfect rest point between
cities along this route, it also acts as a convenient meeting
place to swap riding stories with other bikers passing through.
This historic store offers fresh sandwiches, fluffy pastries,

in this town of 453 coast dwellers. Many visitors and locals
were milling around Main Street, with merchants offering
local arts & crafts, food vendors offering sample BBQ on

was going on all day.

25th Annual

Hot Rods &
Harleys Show

June 2 (Dixon): Iron Steed Harley-Davidson kicked off
this milestone anniversary with a new venue as this annual
event has out grown its large parking lot at the dealership in
Vacaville. Each year, Iron Steed Harley-Davidson partners
up with Abate Local 17 to put on this FREE show.

The new location was down the road and less than 10
miles away at the Dixon May Fairgrounds. Bikers tend to
be leery of changes made to an established event, but this
location turned out to be a hit and was well received!

That being said, the number of motorcycle and hot rod
show entries were also larger than ever… with room to grow!
It was a perfect day at the fairgrounds with food trucks,
beer, vendor booths and live music! The fairgrounds was
buzzing as people wandered up each aisle admiring all the
show bikes and hot rods, then voting for their favorites in the
people’s choice competition. Going forward, this event looks
to have a bright future at this location!

7th Annual

Forever
Freedom Run

May 19 (Penryn): It was a bit of a stormy day with a couple
events in the area canceling due to rain in the forecast. But
not this one, it was rain or shine as the Grateful Ones MC
powered forward with the plans for their 7th annual event.
As it turned out, the weatherman was correct but that did
not stop a large crowd from turning up at the Valencia Club
for the end of the ride festivities. Plenty of food, drinks and a
large raffle give away with some very cool schwag that club
members collected prior to the event.

We jumped at the opportunity to purchase our 2nd
Amendment raffle tickets from the club. In the past, it was
an actual fire arm (of some type or another) give-away; but
because some of you out there (ahem) are not allowed to
own a fire arm anymore - the club decided to open it up.
Now the winner can choose what they want to get with a
gift certificate from Bass Pro Shop for $1000! ‘Grate’ idea
guys! Well Terri and I stayed dry until we decided to ride
home which was also the time the sky decided to open up.
We didn’t mind though - it was a fun day hanging out with old
friends.

It seems like many riders out there got their start
on two motorized wheels by way of dirt bikes or
motocross. I am in that group, although the bikes
I was riding back in 1972 were much different than
the dirt bikes today. When the owner and builder
of this bike told me that he had built this bike as
somewhat of a tribute to his motocross past - it all
made sense. The flashy colors may not be your cup
of tea, but you have to admit that this bike does hold
on to the traditions of the motocross world. And I am
sure many of you will have fond memories of how you
got started with your love of all things motorcycles.
Chad builds his bikes at home in his spare time, with
the occasional help from his kids. It’s good to see
that this is a family affair and the kids get to spend
quality time with dad and learn some skills along the
way that will be a lifelong asset.
