Psychiatrists Providing Collaborative Care Bridging Physical and Mental Health A3

Welcome To APM’s

On behalf of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, we’re happy to welcome you to APM 2017 in Palm
Springs, California. APM President Bob Boland, MD, FAPM, has chosen the conference theme of “Addressing
Current Dilemmas in Psychosomatic Medicine: Consultants Consulting the Experts”.

Clinicians in psychosomatic medicine/consultation-liaison psychiatry face a wide breadth of conundrums and
controversies in all areas of practice. Accordingly, to address current dilemmas in PM/C-L psychiatry, this year’s
program will offer an extensive range of presentations including, but not limited to: inpatient consultation-
liaison, collaborative care, psychiatric emergencies, maternal-fetal medicine, child C-L, addiction, forensics,
ethics, and other topics relevant to clinicians in psychosomatic medicine settings. The format of plenary
sessions has been restructured with a focus on shorter presentations by carefully selected subject matter
experts. Chair Lisa Seyfried, MD, working with a dedicated and talented Annual Meeting Committee, has
labored for the last year to realize Dr. Boland’s vision.

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Here’s a preview of what you can expect to experience at the 2017 APM Annual Meeting:

AA An all-day preconference “Updates in Psychosomatic Medicine” course, featuring 11 expert speakers
reviewing new and emerging issues in the field; in addition, we are offering eight skills-based courses
for an in-depth exploration of challenging areas of Psychosomatic Medicine

AA A special Wednesday evening “just-in-time” workshop, the topic and speakers for which was
announced in the week preceding the meeting.

AA Seven TED-style plenaries by experts who will get straight to the point exploring clinical issues:
ɤɤ Dr. Helen Kales, professor of psychiatry and director of the Program for Positive
Aging at the University of Michigan.
ɤɤ Dr. Sheldon Benjamin, interim chair, Department of Psychiatry; director of
neuropsychiatry, and professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of
Massachusetts Medical School.
ɤɤ Dr. Marcia Verduin, associate dean for students at the University of Central Florida.
ɤɤ Dr. Iqbal “Ike” Ahmed, faculty psychiatrist at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu
and president of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry.
ɤɤ Dr. Maryland Pao, clinical director of the Mental Health Intramural Research Program
at the National Institutes of Health.
ɤɤ Dr. Richard Goldberg, professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren
Alpert Medical School, Brown University; psychiatrist-in-chief at Rhode Island
Hospital and The Miriam Hospital; and senior vice-president for the psychiatry and
behavioral health service line at Lifespan.
ɤɤ Dr. Robert Carney, the 2017 Wayne Katon Research Award winner, professor of
psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine

2017 Annual Meeting

AA Eleanor & Thomas P. Hackett Memorial Award winner Gregory Fricchione, MD, FAPM, on Thursday
will deliver a talk on “Serendipity and Psychosomatic Medicine”, while on Friday Don R. Lipsitt Award
Workshop winner Nancy Byatt, MD, FAPM, will be presenting “From Research to Action: Using Science
to Inform Maternal Health-Related Public Policy”.

AA We also are pleased to see the return of our plenary debate on Saturday, this year between Rebecca
Brendel, MD, JD, FAPM, and Dave Gitlin, MD, FAPM, and moderated by Josepha Cheong, MD. They
will be tackling three difficult cases based on challenging dilemmas people are currently facing
in practice.

AA 135 scientific posters; 38 oral papers, including the Webb Fellows’ presentations; 62 general sessions
AA More networking time and social events to build your connections with PM/C-L professionals—

including longer breaks, outdoor lunches taking advantage of some of the High Desert’s best weather
of the year, the welcome reception at Greta Garbo’s La Casa, a champagne toast reception on Friday
celebrating the Academy’s award winners, and the return of the Academy’s tennis tournament (open
to all skills levels)
AA Up to 32.25 hours of CME credit that can be earned over the four days of the meeting.
With hundreds of abstract submissions, the competition for a place on the program was intense. We have
selected the very best that will offer you a wealth of ideas and insights into cutting-edge research in venues
ranging from plenaries and a poster session, to general sessions, and concurrent paper presentations.

We look forward to engaging with you in this compelling and mind-expanding program, the pinnacle of APM’s
year, a testimony to the vitality of our organization and its importance in our professional lives.
