Welcome to Spectrum 2017

What better way to create fond childhood memories than a
meaningful experience at Spectrum Summer Programs at Tandem
Friends? For over 30 years, Spectrum has offered an exciting array of
creative classes designed to provoke thought and pique new interests.
Spectrum offers your child an abundance of creative possibilities.

The Tandem Friends campus provides a friendly, relaxed environment
for creative self-expression. Teen assistants will help eliminate
feelings of being lost or overwhelmed, particularly with younger
children. The wonderful energy created when young people of
different abilities and talented teachers work together is one of the
many aspects that makes Spectrum unique. Two-week sessions allow
ample time for children to realize in-depth exploration of their creative choices and a four-period day
provides opportunities for curious students to experiment and try something different.

This summer we are excited to be partnering again with Virginia Outside of Richmond, offering four
exciting one-week fishing excursions for kids age 6-14 (see page 9). Our ever-growing “Get in the
Game Basketball” camp will be happening all three sessions. This summer we are again offering
Chef Lisa’s Lunch & Snack program, allowing parents the option of bringing or buying lunches and
snacks (see page 10). We have some wonderful new offerings as well as some old favorites. Michael
Loret is offering a mock Presidential campaign, In It To Win, for our 7th and 8th graders, Sherri
Smith is back with her innovative Box City, Marbleworks, session 3. Darrell Rose, our resident African
drummer, as always, provides Spectrum’s heartbeat (sessions 1 and 3)!

Community building activities and free play between classes allow campers to make new friends in
an unstructured environment. Each session culminates with our “Spectrum Extravaganza”— an art
and performance exhibition. Parents are encouraged to pack a lunch and join their children at noon
on the last day of each session. We also offer an extended day, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending
at 5:30 p.m., for an additional $180 fee per child per session. It’s shaping up to be another exciting
summer!

Fun-Filled, Summer Fishing Adventures

Spectrum Summer 2017 is delighted to be partnering again this year with
Virginia Outside to bring our kids four exciting one-week outdoor fishing programs.
Virginia Outside has been creating great outdoor adventures over the last 14 years.

For details contact Tee Clarkson below.

Fishing Camp July 10-14 & Aug 14-18 • 9:30 am-2:50pm • Boys & Girls • Rising 1st-4th grades • $395

These two one-week fishing camps are designed to spark an interest in fishing and teach basic fishing tactics as well as get
our younger campers outdoors having fun. We fish a combination of public and private ponds and reservoirs, and will often
find an hour to splash around in a local river in search of crayfish, frogs, and salamanders. Safety is our number one priority,

Our “Outside Camp” appeals to any kid who likes to be outdoors exploring nature and wild places. The name speaks for itself,
as we spend an entire week exploring the outdoors. Each day we will enjoy a different activity including fishing, tubing, hiking,
kayaking, and mountain biking! We transport campers to rivers, ponds, and trails, and provide all equipment. Campers need

Fishing Adventure July 24-28 • 8:30am-4:30pm • Boys & Girls • Rising 4th-8th grades • $550

This fun-filled week with Virginia Outside offers campers the opportunity to learn the basics of freshwater fishing on local
private ponds and area rivers. Campers learn casting, knot tying, various fishing techniques, and of course, how to let all their
fish go. Safety is our number one priority, so all campers will wear life jackets when in the water or on a boat. Also, we maintain
a 1-to-5 counselor-to-camper ratio to ensure one-on-one time for camper instruction. This is a great opportunity for campers
who have plenty of fishing experience or for those looking to try it out for the first time. The most important part is being
outside and having fun! Virginia Outside provides all bait and tackle, rods and reels, and life jackets.

About Tandem Friends School of Charlottesville

Founded on uniquely collaborative relationships among faculty and students, Tandem Friends
offers an academic and intellectual education of the first order. We nurture in each student an
enthusiasm for discovery of knowledge, an appreciation for the beauty and power of ideas,
and a hunger for masterful performance.
What sets Tandem Friends apart from the rest is the extraordinary sense of community that
exists between faculty, students, parents, and the many organizations our community service
projects touch. You can feel it the minute you set foot on campus - a sense of caring kindness
and connections to one another. Our students are known and understood as individuals and
represent a diversity of religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.

We honor the traditional Quaker values of integrity, simplicity, peace, community,
equality and stewardship.
