PREFACE

Reading in English is necessary for your journey in learning English as a
foreign language. It must be challenging if you do not learn the aspects of it regularly.
Therefore, Be Active Reader: Moodle Guide for Students in order to provide
university students with an overview of Moodle-Flipped Classroom. This guide
assumes students have basic familiarity with a computer, such as using a mouse,
navigating operating systems, and using a web browser. This guide is designed for
using Moodle (Version 3.10) on a desktop or laptop, but you also can use Moodle
Mobile (see unit 7)

The use of Moodle allows you to participate actively in all phases of reading
class through outside and inside classroom. The moodle adopted interactive reading
model which facilitate you to perform reading performance wider through some
tasks given. All of tasks were structured by Task-Based Language Teaching as an
approach where you can participate during reading class interactively. The
integration of Flipped classroom context encouraged you to train your knowledge
independently so you will be confident to communicate actively through oral and
written form.

As a guidance, hopefully this book will help you to improve your reading skill
so you have better reading ability. Happy Reading!

INTRODUCTION

A. SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
Active Reading is a continuation of the Basic Reading class. In this subject,

students will learn the paragraph level starting from literal and implicit meanings in
paragraphs, basic discussion of topics, main ideas, detailed information from article texts,
reports, and original texts related to temporary issues in English. In addition, students
will interpret the text to describe, classify, argue, and report on issues or discourses that
have been read. Finally, students will develop their digital literacy confidently for having
more knowledge as their basis for developing communicative skills on topics in the form
of topic-related articles, article texts and reports on various subjects, contemporary texts,
and authentic communicative contexts.

This subject challenges students to participate in reading performance which
implied through reading strategies before, during, and after reading class.

B. GOAL
The objective of this class is to improve students’reading skill through increasing

comprehension (understanding what was read) and recall (remembering what was read)
and communicate it verbally and in writing. It emphasizes strategies for reading a variety
of texts to improve reading vocabulary and resources for increasing comprehension.

The goal of using Moodle is accomplished through an individual diagnosis of the
students’ present reading skills and subsequent individual work in appropriate phases in
this subject.

How to Access
A. How do students log to Active Reading Moodle?

1. To log in to your Moodle account, enter the following URL into your browser’s
address bar: http://lms.readingmuch.com/login/index.php

2. Then enter your registration number (NPM) for username and your password is
Reading_2#
For Example as you read on the picture:
Username: Students’ registration number (NPM)
Password: Reading_2#

3. Use the Sign In button to log in.

B. How do students find their course?
1) After logging in, you will find your course automatically in center of the page.

displayed at the left box .
2) To access the contents/ topics, select the students’s course. Then, you choose
Course Contents. There will be RPS, General Instruction, and Review. There are six
topics, they are: Previewing, Determining Topic, Discovering Main Idea, Pattern
of Organization, Making Inference, and Summarizing.
3) Before you learn the topics, select the General option to find out lecturer’s
instructions through learn using Active Reading Moodle. There will be three tasks
that you have to do.

Pre - Class

This task facilitates students to do independent learning through some tasks to
enrich their knowledge for beginning understanding. There will be four tasks that
they should do first before real time (our Reading Class on schedule).

There are four tasks that facilitate you to build your prior knowledge. They are:
Key Concept, Comprehending Phase (Part A), Comprehending Phase (Part B),

This task consists of video that supported by brief explanation about the topic
which is disscussed.

In-Class
In-class facilitates students to do distance learning in real time through virtual learning
or chat. There will be five features of tasks that help you to be communicative in this
Active Reading class, they are attendance, page, forum/discussion, face to Face (built
in), and quiz.

1) Attendance
a) Every students has his attendance report in each meeting. Lecturer will check
student’s attendance refers to his access in this Moodle.

you are present or not in each meeting.

Post-Class

Post-class facilitates students to report their authentic tasks after in-class phase. Students not
only get their score, but also lecturer’s motivation to learn the topic or advice if it’s needed.
This phase consists of the assignment feature that allows the lecture to easily collect external
documents from students.

In this Phase, students should upload their authentic task within Moodle. To take this task, click
individual report, here is the assignment feature example:

1. Download the document of quiz/test. Then, do it individually.

2. Before collecting your task, make sure to give yourself ample time to upload your task
before the close time.

3. Click submission at the buttom of the screen. The maximum upload size for files and number
of attachments are listed above the submissions box.

4. After you upload the file, now see the uploaded file (see figure above). If you want to
change your file, simply click edit submission or remove submission. Then, repeat the
submission process.

Moodle Mobile Display

This moodle is also available for your smart device. The application is called Moodle
Mobile and is available for Android and iOS device. Once, you have installed and opened the app,
you will see on this screen:

Step 1:

In site address, enter lms.readingmuch.com. Then hit
connect

Step 2:

(See figure 1), Then, enter in your login Active Reading
Moodle. If you can’t remember them, see the (How to
Access of this manual) (See Unit 2)
