Ben’s story…Playing golf with a sun allergy

Ben Brown is a 9-year old from Stockton-On-Tees, who first became interested in golf when his parents bought him an
Alligator Golf game for his second birthday. He would spend hours walking backwards and forwards puCng the ball
across the living room. Ben received his first set of clubs for his 3rd birthday and he started going to the driving range with
his Dad. He hasn’t looked back, despite suffering from a sun allergy known as solar urIcaria. Ben is now a member of
Wynyard Golf Club and will be working towards geCng his first handicap during this year.

The main symptoms of solar urIcaria are itching, sInging and burning. Rarely, the rash is accompanied by symptoms such
as headache, nausea and vomiIng and Ben has suffered from all four symptoms. It is sIll unknown why people suffer
from solar urIcaria, but Ben was born eight weeks prematurely, leaving him with a weaker immune system. As he gets
older and his immune system becomes stronger, his body may cope with the allergy beNer, but this is no guarantee. To
manage the condiIon, Ben now has three items on repeat prescripIon. He takes anIhistamines in the morning and at
night, which help control the rash. During hot and sunny days, he needs to apply prescripIon-strength sun cream and
may also need to take abdominal migraine tablets, to prevent or ease any nausea.

An example of when his condiIon affected his golf game the most was at the 2014 Wee Wonders Final, at St Andrews.
Ben started the final round two shots behind 3rd place and aUer three holes had closed the gap to one shot. Because it
became very sunny and hot, Ben developed a rash and became nauseous, but sIll finished a credible 6th place. It was
aUer this that his parents realised that they needed to get Ben’s condiIon diagnosed.

AUer watching the junior golf documentary, 'The Short Game', at the age of 5, Ben wanted to compete at the US Kids Golf
World Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina, which was something that he was able to do in 2015, following his
performance at the 2014 Wee Wonders Final. Unfortunately, due to temperatures of around 35 degrees ◦C and glaring
sunny condiIons, he couldn’t perform to his full potenIal, but Ben is determined to work hard and have another stab at
it in the future!

In 2016 Ben won the inaugural Graeme Storm Junior Open at Hartlepool Golf Course
(7-10 age group), aged 8. One of the prizes for winning was a round of golf with Graeme
at his affiliated golf club, Rockliffe Hall, which Ben really enjoyed. In 2017, he aNempted
to defend his trophy and just lost out on count-back. But again, Ben was delighted with
his efforts and looks forward to going back again next year.

Ben's other top finishes include a 6th place at the US Kids
Golf Venice Open, at Galzignano Terme, in Italy, last year,
just missing out on a top 5 trophy, and three 2nd place
finishes at the Tiger Club Grand Final, which is played at
Gainsborough Golf Club. Ben is also proud of his hole-in-
one, which he achieved in a pracIce round for a Wee
Wonders Regional final, at Brucefields Golf Centre, near
SIrling, last July.

There was a prolonged period when Ben was younger when he would play 10-pin bowling at home and at the bowling
alley. This may have been more pracIcal, considering his allergy, but he loves his golf too much and giving it up would
never be an opIon for him. Ben has said that his main aim would be to be a professional golfer, but if he didn't manage
this, then he would like to teach the game to juniors.
An inspiraIonal young man, best of luck for the future!

Report from the Grand Final by Steve Jackson, The Sports Journalist:

A single shot was the margin of victory in the Elite Division of the Super Six Grand Final as Andres
Valen_ne (Leighton Buzzard) edged out Tiger Adams (Wellingborough) with a gross 79 at Redbourn GC,
Herqordshire.
The net category was even closer as Jacob Williams (Peterborough Milton) beat Oliver Brunt (Gog Magog)
on countback with a net 74 apiece.
Roehampton’s Robert Tansey produced the standout round in the Challenge Division as he compiled a
gross score of 83 to finish six ahead of Chris_an Wall (West Essex).
Once again countback was required in the net sec_on as Callum Powell’s beAer finish in a net 69 meant
the LiAle Hay member got the beAer of Ellis WhiAles (Northampton).
Charlie Ward’s class was decisive in the 9-10 Age Group as a nine-hole score of 40 pushed the Breadsall
Priory golfer four clear of Jensen Berridge (Dartmouth).
The long journey up from Kent proved worthwhile for Arthur
Saunders as the LiAlestone member’s 42 liIed him two ahead of
Joseph Aldous (Boringdon Park).
MaAhew Whitaker (Nazeing) was successful in the Six & Under
Age Group by a couple of strokes from Henry Saddleton
(Sprowston Manor) and Bobby Moore (Nene Park), who both
came in with a round of 41.

Several juniors enjoyed a brilliant day out at the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am at the stunning Wentworth GC

They were lucky enough to meet and chat with the most popular man in golf, the one and only Andrew 'BEEF'

Hannah Screen and Harry Goddard. Both Beef and Graeme emphasised that the most important thing for junior

Pro’s Tip… with PGA Professional,

Sarah Smith (Saffron Walden GC)

[email protected]

Distance control

FAULT
When puYng, it’s the length of your swing that predominantly affects distance control. When the puAer
speeds up or slows down in tempo during the swing, or the length of the swing differs from either side, it
will affect how far the ball travels.

FIX

The puYng stroke is about working on equal distances back and through, increasing the length for a long
puA and decreasing the length for a short puA. The tempo should not be varied.

England Junior Golf Credit: www.womenandgolf.com Follow @WomenandGolfMag "14

W W W. E N G L A N D J U N I O R G O L F. C O. U K

Why do golfers miss pu3s le4 and right?
FAULT
Any change in your leI wrist posi_on (right-handed golfers) during a puYng stroke will have an immediate
effect on the angle of the clubface returning to the ball. At impact it will be either open (image A) or
closed (image B) and will affect the direc_on of the puA.

AB

FIX
My best _p is to think about the back of your leI hand going towards the hole for every puA, so the leI
wrist remains square and therefore the clubface remains square at impact.

Discover the benefits of golf through the Golf Founda7on programmes

Sarah Smith, PGA Professional at Saffron Walden Golf Club, tells us about working with the Golf Founda_on to
bring golf to more children in the Saffron Walden (Essex) area.
“We have all been working closely with the Golf Founda_on for the past few years, they are always a major
help, both with ideas and the funding that they support us with, to enable us to run many sessions in the local
community and schools.
We have already taught in six primary schools (including Radwinter and Birchanger), run an aIer-school club at
the boarding school and have also taught a girls’ group from Friends 6th Form, all in Saffron Walden.
We offer a 4-week programme, which involves Tri Golf for Years 5 and 6 in their PE lessons; in the 4th week
they then come to the golf club for a real golf session on the range. We have had lots of great feedback and so
far, eight children have joined our weekend classes from the work that we have done; this will hopefully lead to
Junior membership.
We have also just run the second week at Great Sampford Youth Club, which works alongside the Ethan
Linwood charity. We are delivering Golf Xtreme to the children who come to the youth club, so they have a
great taster of what golf is like! Many of the children have never had the chance to try golf before, so the
lightweight clubs and 30% larger balls is a good introduc_on. There are around 60−80 children who regularly
aAend the youth club on a Wednesday evening and so far, I would say that 60% of the children have had a go
at the golf games. The plan from here is to invite them to the club (similarly to the schools) to try real golf on
the range! It's great hearing the kids say: 'Are you back to do the golf again!?' when we turn up.
For those youngsters who are interested in taking up or who would like to improve their golf, at Saffron Walden
GC we run six coaching groups at the weekend, for members and non-members. Head Professional, Rob
McNicholas, oversees the main squad team coaching, which is made up of 10 junior members and we have a
thriving junior sec_on of 42 members at present. There is a minimum of one compe__on per month for those
juniors to play in, including cup compe__ons and a roll-up, which is also open to those without or working
towards geYng their handicap.”
