What is Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training,
youth and sport in Europe. Its budget of €14.7 billion will provide
opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain
experience, and volunteer abroad.

Set to last until 2020, Erasmus+ doesn't just have opportunities for
students. Merging seven prior programmes, it has opportunities for
a wide variety of individuals and organisations.

The aim of Erasmus+ is to contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for growth, jobs, social equity and
inclusion, as well as the aims of ET2020, the EU's strategic framework for education and training.

About Project:

Inspiration in art and literature can be enhanced thanks to muses, and
it has been so since the Greek godesses. Nowadays, more than ever,
pupils, teachers, people need inspiration to make their daily life fruitful
and rich through learning. The assumption of this project is that
MUSEums can contribute to this inspiration in their diversity. Learning
is not something that stops when the school gates close. Pupils often
consider museums to be places where old dusty paintings are on
display - not making a lot of sense to them. That is why teachers need
to accompany the pupils by creating activities that will motivate them and turn an expected boring
moment into an enriching conscious visit; acquiring new habits that will help them understand their
world and society, and thus becoming better citizens. In this MUSE project, teachers from France,
Turkey, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Germany will share their experiences and
methods in museum education. They will create lessons and activities based on their local art, history,
science, modern art, technical and environmental museums, and on the observations of the pupils
from many european countries.

All the tools created by the team will be updated on the project website, on etwinning, in brochures
and in the “museums box” so that any teacher, pupil or family wanting to include museum education
in their path to learning can easily find useful resources. Our aim is to make our tools and resources
motivate many other people and inspire them towards a new life of learning in and outside the walls
of a classroom.

Results of Survey:

As a starting point for the project, all partners had
completed a pre-survey at their own institutions.

France:14, Turkey:421, Sweden: 24, Spain: 28, Northern
Ireland: 7, The Netherlands:19 , Germany: 26. The survey
was filled by in total, 539 teachers from 7 countries.

According to these results; the following evaluation had
emerged.

* Out-of-school learning activities are mostly used by teachers.

* Within the academic year, different numbers (at least one) are planned visiting museum.

* By the teachers, the museum is seen as a learning tool.

* At least one activity; museums are used as learning tool.

* A visit to the museum is encouraged to achieve the goals of a lesson.

* Each museum is evaluated after the tour.

* Also; the museums should be developed and supported as educational material or tool.

Two Museums in ANKARA-TURKEY

1. ANITKABIR : http://www.anitkabir.tsk.tr/index_eng.html

About Museum:

The Atatürk and War of Independence
Museum is established on a 3000 square
meter columned area below the Hall of
Honor in Atatürk's Mausoleum. The
museum honors the Çanakkale, Sakarya,
Great Attack and Commander-in Chief
Battles, the establishment years of the
Turkish Republic and the Atatürk period via
various exhibition techniques.

When looking towards Monument Block from the Ceremonial Plaza, it is seen that the museum
approached by entering from the door of the Tower of National Pact on the right has four main parts.
In the first hall, the personal belongings of Atatürk are displayed. In the second hall, panoramas and
paintings of the Çanakkale Battles and the War of Independence, and in the third hall the National
Struggle and Revolutions are displayed in different arch vaults. In the fourth hall, Atatürk's personal
books and samples of his hand written notes on these books are exhibited.

The Atatürk Museum, in the first section between National Struggle and Revolution Towers and where
Atatürk's personal belongings were exhibited, was later combined with the other sections and
rearranged via modern exhibition techniques and renamed as the Atatürk and the War of
Independence Museum. In addition to Atatürk's personal belongings, the gifts presented to him by
foreign statesmen are also exhibited in the section of the museum inaugurated on June 21, 1960. Some
belongings of Atatürk given as a gift to the museum by his adopted children, A. Afet İnan, Rukiye Erkin
and Sabiha Gökçen, are also on display in the museum.

TPM 1 Bergues (France- january 2018)
Bergues is a small town of about 4000 middle class inhabitants in the north of France. Entirely
surrounded by medieval ramparts, the Flemish town is nested close to its Belfry, classified World
Heritage Site by UNESCO. On the hill which looms over the city, the ruins of a former Benedictine
abbey keep guard and the yellow brick museum of the Mont de Piété unveils a rich collection of
mainly 17th century paintings of the Northern schools.
The city has been highlighted in the movie of Dany Boon ‘Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis’, partly filmed
in Bergues, in May-June 2017.
Cobergher middle school counts a slowly increasing number of approximately 300 pupils (from 11
to 15 years old). The pupils study up to 3 languages (French and English for everyone plus
Spanish for most of them or German for a few). They can also study Latin and Ancient Greek. The
school has developed a partnership with the local museum around the “Club Musée / Roman
Photo” and there are also around 40 students who take part in European studies and 12 in the
Erasmus Plus Club. Many projects, such as for instance the cross-country running or the cleaning
the ramparts action, take place during the school year.

What we did during the week (short description of programme)
The meeting in Bergues, coordinator of the project, allowed the partners to organize and monitor
the project more in detail, dates for the next mobilities were confirmed or altered, the official logo
was chosen, questionnaires were created and a selection of different types of museums were
visited, such as “La piscine” art museum in Roubaix and its boxes, the art museum in Cassel and
its visit using our different senses, the maritime museum in Dunkirk, “La manufacture” textile
museum in Tourcoing, etc.
These visits enabled the partners to have a more precise idea of what to aim for in the project and
to have their first impressions on different out-of-school learning activities.

Some anecdotes or extra information
This mobility was the first and partners could finally meet in person and friendships were born. After
only a week, partners were eager to meet again in Rotterdam.

Mobiltity- TPM 1 Bergues
La piscine
La Piscine (French for "the swimming pool") is a museum of art and industry, located in the city of
Roubaix in northern France. It is more formally known as La Piscine-Musée d'Art et d'Industrie
André Diligent or Le musée d'Art et d'Industrie de la ville de Roubaix, but its common name derives
from the fact that it is housed in a former indoor swimming pool, with a notable art deco interior.
- Webpage to museum: http://www.roubaix-lapiscine.com/

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers and students
- It was a very informative and beautiful museum with an interesting history. The guide was
excellent and really made the visit worthwhile.
- The pedagogic resources where we as visitors could draw out boxes for extra material was
great and made the experience much better.
- I really enjoyed the hands on resources in the art gallery as it not only enhanced my
experience of pictures but made me feel part of the picture. I could see what the artist was
trying to recreate. For example, one painting had children looking through a keyhole, the
gallery had provided a 3-D keyhole to help try to imagine what the children in the painting
were looking at. Children of all ages and abilities would enjoy this activity as it is very open
ended task.

Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
- This museum works very well for students of all ages. We didn’t have our own pupils there
during the visit but there were a few groups of students there during our visit and the
seemed to enjoy it.
- I certainly will be encouraging art museums in Belfast to embrace hands on resources in
their galleries as it definitely helps bring the art more to life. It will help children connect more
with art and It was great to see that we don’t need 21st century technology to enhance
pupils enjoy of it.
- The museum itself is extremely user friendly to children of all ability levels and the guide can
pitch her talk on the ability of the audience.

Mobiltity- TPM 1 Bergues
THE AUDOMAROIS MARSHES
The Audomaris marshesa re located between Flanders and Artois, and is around the historical and
artistic town of Saint-Omer. Over the centuries this has been the home for many generations of
people who lived and enjoyed this interesting area. Today as well as in history can we travel around
in small boats in this maze of waterways. It har recently been recognised by Unesco.

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers
We had chance to observe diversity of the living zone in this beautiful town. As it has the name of
Marshland, once upon a time there were monks here who developed the town witg agriculture. By
the chance of water canals and rivers there are a lot of river animals, fishes, mammals and other
endemic species.
We had a boat trip on the river, and saw the Marshland exactly. Birds, amphibians, and village
styled little houses gave us peace feeling.
Museum had its own materials and games for school kids. They are so educative and useful for
permanent learning. Especially the detective game for animals took our attention at most.
Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
Educative learning activities for ecology and biology. They had many good activities to make the
experience more interactive and we can all imagine that this is a popular and good place for out
och school education

C1 Rotterdam (Netherlands)
Rotterdam is a city in the Netherlands, in South Holland within the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt river delta
at the North Sea. It is a major logistic and economic center, Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port, and
the second-largest city in the Netherlands, just behind Amsterdam. Rotterdam is known for the
Erasmus University, its riverside setting, lively cultural life and maritime heritage.
Rotterdam’s logistic success is based on its strategic location by the North Sea, at the mouth of the
Nieuwe Maas channel leading into the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. The rivers Rhine, Meuse and
Scheldt give waterway access into the heart of Western Europe, including the highly industrialized
Ruhr. The extensive distribution system including rail, roads and waterways have earned
Rotterdam the nicknames “Gateway to Europe” and “Gateway to the World”.

The lovely hosts, Robbie and Mia, welcomed us to the school. Roncalli MAVO is a school with 630
students between 12-17 years of age. The school started at 2011. During the week we visit a lot of
museums in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Water & Energy, Maeslantkering Maritiem Museum,
Nemo Science Museum, Boat trip Amsterdam, Anne Franks House and Witte de With Center for
Contemporary Art.
This was the first meeting with students and it work out well with the host families. It was a happy
visit for all of the guests from the other countries in Europe. We all loved the architecture of
Rotterdam and it was fun to make the ride with the speedboat in the famose harbour.
We learn a lot about the Netherlands and it’s way to live with the Northern Sea.

Mobiltity- C2 Rotterdam
Anna Frank’s house is a very vivid reflection and reality on one of countless tragic and
unfortunate stories of World War 2. The museum is the former house in which Anne Frank´s father
had a company. It is the place where the family went into hiding in the occupied Netherlands and
where Anne wrote her famous diary. If you are familiar with Anna’s diary and her sad story, her
house makes you go back to her time and relive it. From the tree she mentions in her diary in their
back garden to the table in the livingroom or the celebrity photos she put on her wallpaper in her
room are all there as if they are waiting for her return. Once more you understand the cruelty and
meaningless of wars.
- Webpage to museum: http://www.annefrank.org/en/

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers and students
- for the students and the teachers this was the most emotional museum
- an experience they will never forget
- the students had not learnt about the story of Anne Frank and her family before but they are
her age and they were very impressed by Anne´s personality and the way she dealt with the
situation; also they were really sad after the visit because it was a lot to take in emotionally
- to visit the Anne Frank house provides an insight into the fate of Anne and her family; also
into the Shoah.
- most impressive museum visit for students and teachers.
- preparation in class necessary (research task very good) and still a completely different
experience because of the feeling conveyed (the rooms, the size of the rooms/where the
family had to hide).
- Lots of authentic historical documents relating to the holocaust, including the real diary.

Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
It is not necessary to have read “ The Diary of Anne Frank” before visiting the museum, you`ll feel
her spirit and thoughts.
The Anne Frank house offers a profound experience for students and adults.
It’s very important today, because of the refugees who coming to Europe. Audio guide is very
useful.

Mobility- C1 Rotterdam
NEMO is a science museum where everyone – from young to old – can discover how fascinating
science and technology are. There are five floors crammed full of exhibitions, experiments,
demonstrations and workshops, where the visitors can learn about the basic principles of science
and technology, about phenomena such as electricity, light, sound and gravity. The aim of the
museum is to learn by doing, by experiencing and by using all the senses.
- Webpage to museum: https://www.nemosciencemuseum.nl/en/

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers and students
- Interactive Science museum
- Very good for deepening knowledge for science students.
- Impressive!
- Impossible to get bored there!
- Students become physicists and scientists.
- It is a lot of fun to try the different experiments and students get curious about scientific
phenomenons.
- The students loved this museum. It triggered their curiosity. Even if they had not prepared
the visit, they were impressed and discovered many things.

Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
- The idea of giving each pupil the mission to go find something they thought interesting and
create a question for others was really nice. That way they kept looking at everything.
- We did not have time to exploit the results but we would have loved to see how Catherine
would have organised the follow-ups.

C2 Wolfsburg (Germany- may 2018)
Wolfsburg is most famous for its connection to Wolkswagen and it´s car factories. It was created by
Adolf Hitler in 1938 as a part of his plans for Nazigermany as a superpower. It was supposed to be
a rawmodel for other industrial cities. The factories were used also for the warindustry and the city
and it´s factories were bombed at the end of the war.
It is now a fluorishing city that surrounds the Autostadt that is the centre of the city. In here you
have a beautiful park, car delivery centre and much more. In 1973 Wolfsburg became an official
city which now inhabit about 100 000 people and and more people commuting every day to work in
the city and carfactories.

We were welcomed at the school by our lovely hosts Katja and Catrin. Heinrich Nordhoff
Gesamtschule is a big school with 1300 students between 11-20 years of age. In the school there
is approximately 115 people working.
During the week we visited many museums as the medieval Wolfsburg castle, Autostadt and
Marienborn connected to Germanys division after WW2. We also have the possibility to meet
Wolfsburgs mayor and hear about the present and future plans for the city.

We had a very warm week as this was during the famous hot summer of 2018. We all remember
the very hot visit to the castle and the students (and teachers) really longed for some shade. The
students lived in hostfamilies and made great connections for the future, both in and after this
project.
During the week we explored many ways to use museums as a part of out of school learning which
is what this project is about.

Mobiltity-Wolfsburg

MARIENBORN BORDER
This is a museum about the borderpassing between East and West Germany after WW2. It´s was
the most important bordercrossing because it was the closest entry to West Berlin (only 170 km). It
was taken in traffic right after the war but after 1972 it became more important due to it´s location at
Autobahn. After the fall of the wall starting 1989 the border here closed down 1990.
Photo from the museum

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers and students
Helmstedt-Marienborn was the largest of the border crossing complexes of the East Germany on
the border with the West Germany, the most sinister stretch of the Cold War era "İron Curtain" that
divided Germany for 40 years. Today it's one of the prime national monuments commemorating
that time (together with the associated border memorial at Hötensleben). It was extremely
interesting to have guides who actually lived at the period they were talking about. The museum
gave an excellent insight into how the people of Germany had to cross the border when the country
was split up.
The check point areas showed the lengths the East German authorities went to in ordered to stop
people escaping their country.
Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
It´s good if the students have talked about this part of the history before visit as it can be difficult to
understand this part of the history. The car and the passport checkpoints were the parts the
students understood best due to the photos and machines.

Mobiltity- C2 Wolfsburg

The A utostadt ( German for A utomobile City) receives two million visits every year; and no wonder.
In addition to the excellence of its interior and exterior design, the architectonic concept of the
place exceeds any previous expectations of what a car museum is like.
This automobile temple is located in Wolfsburg (Germany), the cradle of the historic car brand
Volkswagen. The attraction features avant-garde pavilions for the principal automobile brands as
well as the biggest delivery centre in the world.

Thoughts about the Museums from teachers and students

- Impressive because of the atmosphere etc. (comparable to an international EXPO).
- Fantastic surroundings and friendly guides. A good walk around but we could have had

much more time to explore on our own hand.
- Great visit. It was really nice to have an overview first with a guide and then to visit at our

own pace and according to our tastes.
- My friends and I loved visiting, it was one of our best travel experiences, we had a very good

day with all the students from different countries and it was an experience to remember for a
long time. I hope we organize more trips with visits like these and that they all have the
same purpose: to learn a lot.
- The students and teachers were impressed by the place, its organization. Everything is done
so that you don’t feel you are next to a huge factory.
- The park was an amazing experience for all and you really need to spend a full day there to
benefit all the attractions.

Concluding thoughts about the museum for learning activities
- Inspiring place for stimulating scientific vocations
- Should have been great to have seen the actual Volkswagen factory so that students can
visualise any productions process.
- Nice guides and interesting facts about the car industry and its history in Wolfsburg; also the
pedagogical/educational concept is interesting (unfortunately we did not see all of it, e.g.
Carbon Footprint)

To live in a host family

In this project the students live in host families during their stay under the three TPM meetings.
This is a good way for the project to create more opportunities for long lasting contacts and
possibilities to see more of the culture. Here are some reflections made by some of the students
during their stay in families in Wolfsburg

Some reflections from the students
I lived with my exchange partner Nick with his parents. I had my own room and I really enjoyed his
family. It is very exciting and educational to live with another family. It’s nice to get acquaintance
with other people in my age too.
I lived with my exchange partner Aileen with both of her parent and her moms friends in villa.
I had my own room so l had a little personal space. It was very nice experience to lived with them
because I had to live with another family which l was a little bit nervous and afraid but l was also
looking forward to it. I haven't been in this country before and that I was going to live with another
family was so scary.
l felt like l found a second family who cares for me we always had dinner together and
communicate and it is a great opportunity to improve my English, the Dutch culture and my social
skills.

My exchange partners were twins Jessica and Anna. I lived in an apartment with them and their
parents. I was worried before I met them because I felt it was a little bit hard to live with persons
who I didn’t have any idea about how they were, but I felt better when I met them at the airport. I
had my own room, it was Jessica's room so I could have my own space. Everytime my host family
had to pick me up both of the twins came with their father or mother. We had dinner together
everyday and we had discussions about different things for example differences between Sweden
and Germany. It was a good experience to live with another family to see how the daily life in
Germany look like and to make new friends.

Pros to live in a host family:
● Get new contacts.
● Get contact with a new language.
● Learn about the family tradition
● Improve my English skills, social skills
● Learn about the other cultures and how their school systems works.
● I liked that we stayed with a host family and the girl was the the same age as me and also
we had lot in common.
● Visiting different museum and learning the city history
● Making international friends
● Can see the differences between the daily life in other countries.
● Showed respect to each other and I felt like I was a member of the family not a guest.

Cons to live in a host family:
● When the host family can not speak English.
● Less privacy (sharing rooms)
● less freetime
● Strict rules to follow
● Missing my own family.

Reflections from students that were host families
(Nick) He thought that it was interesting and joyfully to have a student. He said that you should
think about your exchange students like a brother.

(Aileen) She loved to make international friends/connections and she was excited to be part of this
program because it was the first time it took place (and also to host a swedish student). The
program, the field trips, speaking english a lot, getting to know you and becoming friends with you
was a lot of fun. So yes it had a lot of benefits.

(Jessica and Anna) They thought it was great to get know new people and make new friends.
They liked the BBQ because we had so much fun and the parents and the exchange students were
able to talk to each other.
