Career Research Worksheet

This worksheet is about the career field as a whole. For example, you are researching
“education” and not second grade science teacher.

Please add spacing to this document and type your answers under the questions below. Be sure to highlight
your answers in yellow so I can identify your information quickly.

1. What is your intended career? If you are not sure of a career right now, choose one of interest
to explore.
Recording Artist

2. Find a professional website for your career. You can find this on the OOH (Occupational
Outlook Handbook). Go to the “more info” tab and then click on the name of a professional
website for that career. The OOH is NOT the professional website for a specific career. What is
the name of the website? Please provide the link here. As a last resort, if you cannot find a
professional website on the OOH, you may find a professional website sometimes by using
google. (Please show me first in class if you had to use google.)
https://www.narip.com/what-we-do/

3. Using the OOH (“more info” tab), a professional website specific to your career, or the library
database, find one professional/academic journal (something that comes out periodically either
in print or web form) related to your career. What is the name of the journal?

http://arpjournal.com/

4. Field/discipline:
a. Identify the career field/discipline. For example, if the career is a teacher then the field
is education or if the career is mechanic then the field is automotive industry.
Music
b. Identify a specific position or title in the field/discipline (for example, an elementary
school teacher or body work repair mechanic).
Recording Artist
c. Identify two related positions in a similar or related field/discipline in which you may be
interested (for example, a day care worker and college instructor or machine repair and
certified dealer service manager).
Producer, Audio Engineer

5. Knowledge /Training:

a. List the minimum education required
None, can be self-taught.

b. List any required certifications or licenses. How often do you have to renew the
certification or license? How many hours of continuing education units (CEU) do you have
to obtain each year to keep that certification or license?
No licenses or certifications required, only renewal of computer tech programs needed.

c. List the majority of the skills needed to be successful in this job.
Musically Inclined, Disciplined, Working well with others, attention to detail, creativity

d. How many years of experience are required to work in this career?
None required but the more you have the better you are.

6. Salary/Earnings:
a. List the hiring (starting) salary range. (Use current position listing or job boards.)
$26.84 an hour
b. What is the average salary (not the highest) ?
$26.84 an hour

7. Future of this career:
a. What is the job outlook for this career? In other words, is this in a growing area? Explain
the growth or decline (in numbers) of this particular career.

Employment of musicians and singers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as
fast as the average for all occupations. Growth will be due to increases in demand for musical
performances. However, there will be tough competition for jobs because of the large number of
people who are interested in becoming musicians and singers.

b. List the availability of this career in the market area of Houston, and Texas in general,
and/or other states in which you are interested in working. Availability is not as high as it
could be in Texas but is much higher in states like Tennessee, NY and California, as I would
have predicted.

c. Can this be an international career choice? Explain why or why not. Do YOU want to work
internationally, and if so, why?
Absolutely, music is an international art. I would love to be well known over sea’s and be
able to live a normal life here in the states, since fame is a part that may or may not come
with the job.

8. Daily Activities:
a. What do people in this field or job do? In at least 10 complete sentences in your own
words, (not a list) describe a typical day for this position. Be very specific and thorough.
(For example, for a teacher you do not want to JUST say that a teacher teaches students all
day. WHAT does that look like? What else does a teacher do?)
A typical day in this position would start off with hot tea and a devotional in order to get my
head right and be in a peaceful space. These practices as a person are important to a song

writer as being at peace is vital in being able to focus in on and release creativity. After a
peaceful start to the day a recording artist would do yoga or go on a hike or to the gym, as
being physically in shape and having cardiovascular stamina is important when performing
on stage. This is also important for breath support when singing. A recording artist may go
to see their own vocal coach in order to get their voice warmed up, practice breath support
or whatever set of songs they may be preparing to perform. Along with their vocal coach, a
recording artist would also have a choreography session with their choreographer or stage
performance coach in order to go over any dancing or staging for upcoming shows. If the
artist is planning to perform with a band then they would meet and rehearse with band
members/musicians. A recording artist would take the time to meet with their manager/
team members to brain storm and execute things on the business side of their career such
as the marketing and distribution of their music. A recording artist would end their day with
a long studio session whether it be to write or record vocals or both.

9. Career and you (in complete sentences):
a. How does this career align to your interests and personality? Use your Do What You Are
results to justify your alignment.
i. List your four initials. ENFP
ii. Explain what your initials mean? I am warmly enthusiastic, high-spirited, ingenious,
and imaginative. Able to do almost anything that interests them. Quick with a
solution for any difficulty and ready to help anyone with a problem.
iii. Explain how those initials match or do not match your career choice. These initals
match my career choice as a singer/songwriter because I use my imagination a lot to
write and help other people in songwriting and by putting out music they can relate
to.
b. Why is this career significant to you? Why did you choose to go into this career? What
inspired you? I have been singing since I came out of the womb.
c. Describe how and why or why not this assignment altered or completely changed your
career path.
This assignment did not alter my career path as I have chosen a crazy one, or better yet, it
chose me, and I cannot be moved.

communicate with others by being well spoken and friendly. My music knowledge of all genres will be a

management skills will be helpful in this position as I am given the freedom to carry out my tasks without

Currently my weaknesses that would prevent my success in this position is my lack of knowledge in ProTools,
my lack of experience in the radio industry and my lack of knowledge in Music Master databases. I will need
thorough knowledge of Protools software in order to be successful in any area musically. In this specific
position, lack of radio knowledge would hinder my success in the way of my needing to learn the ins and outs

hinder me greatly, as I would be required to utilize these programs for daily tasks without supervision or
guidance.

none” is not an acceptable answer.)
I did not realize that radio stations distribute playlists to major record labels.

I am a bit uncertain that this particular area of the music field would be my cup of tea as I prefer to be more so

Career Exploration
As opposed to me choosing a career in the music industry, I feel like music chose me. I
basically came out of the womb singing and have not shut up since. I am absolutely fascinated
with and desire the knowledge of every facet and aspect of the creation of music. I was
classically trained in vocal and took both Choir and Musical Theatre throughout middle and high
school. I have now been a recording artist and song writer for about five years and in my pursuit
to become a well-rounded artist I plan to go to audio engineering school. I will learn about the
technical creative side of recording, production and even live sound. I believe this will make me
more of an entity as an artist because even if I do not always engineer my own recording sessions
I will have the ability to easily articulate what I want things to sound like to the engineer that I
am working with at the time. This will ultimately give me more creative control over my music.
My Do What You Are results revealed that I am warmly enthusiastic, high-spirited, ingenious,
and imaginative, able to do almost anything that interests me and quick with a solution for any
difficulty and ready to help anyone with a problem. These initials match my career choice as a
singer/songwriter because I use my imagination a lot to write and help other people in
songwriting and help listeners by putting out music they can relate to. After further researching
the career positions available to audio engineers I came across their place in radio. I did not
realize that radio stations distribute playlists to major record labels which I learned through
looking into audio engineering tasks when paired with radio.

For a recording artist and audio engineer, no education or certificate is necessarily
required as many people in this field are self-taught. However Audio Engineering and Software
Skills and Radio Broadcasting knowledge are necessary if I want to get a job that is solely audio
engineering in the area of radio. Obtaining an Associate of Science in Audio Production and a
Bachelors in Marketing would be ideal. Knowledge of Audio Software such as Protools and
Music Master, Knowledge of MS-Office and Broadcast Communication is required in order to
work as an audio engineer.

A typical day for a singer-songwriter recording artist would start off with hot tea and a
devotional in order to get my head right and be in a peaceful space. These practices as a person
are important to a song writer as being at peace is vital in being able to focus in on and release
creativity. After a peaceful start to the day a recording artist would do yoga or go on a hike or to
the gym, as being physically in shape and having cardiovascular stamina is important when
performing on stage. This is also important for breath support when singing. A recording artist
may go to see their own vocal coach in order to get their voice warmed up, practice breath
support or whatever set of songs they may be preparing to perform. Along with their vocal
coach, a recording artist would also have a choreography session with their choreographer or
stage performance coach in order to go over any dancing or staging for upcoming shows. If the
artist is planning to perform with a band then they would meet and rehearse with band
members/musicians. A recording artist would take the time to meet with their manager/ team
members to brain storm and execute things on the business side of their career such as the
marketing and distribution of their music. A recording artist would end their day with a long 8
hour studio session whether it be to write or record vocals or both. This would begin around 7pm
and end towards 3am. For a singer-songwriter I can focus on a career in songwriting, writing for

3 Olivares

not only myself but other artists. I can also go the audio engineering route, engineering sessions
for other artists and mixing music or I could focus solely on being a singer recording artist. I
think I will love the fact that I am doing what I love and have the ability to touch other people’s
lives and hearts through expressing my own personal life experiences in a healthy positive way
that other people may be able to relate to. The only part of this career I think I could possible end
up disliking is being forced to be away from my family for extended periods of time like if I
went on tour.

I plan on getting an Associates in audio production at HCC and continuing on to UH to
obtain my Bachelors of Business marketing. Since my knowledge as a recording artist has
already been obtained through years of experience I believe these diplomas will make me more
of an entity in adding to my arsenal of skills as a recording artist, engineer and business woman
in the music industry. This career is more of a self-employed freelance type of field but signing
to a major label is an option. Some of the main major labels are Atlantic, Sony, Def Jam, Capitol
Records, Universal, and RCA. Essentially, these labels would act as my pocket book as an artist
by providing me with the budget I need in order to successfully create and market my music.
