The High Desert Museum is pleased to present
Art in the West, our annual art exhibition
and silent auction. This juried, invitation-only,
national exhibition showcases the inventive
and varied ways in which artists respond to the
people, landscapes, history and wildlife of the
High Desert. The artwork gives Museum visitors
the opportunity to view the rugged splendor and
unique stories of the West through the eyes of
its most creative residents.

The artwork featured in Art in the West is
available for sale by silent auction. Bids can
be placed at the Museum’s store, Silver Sage
Trading, or by phone through Saturday, August
25 at 2:00 pm. Final bidding will occur during
the High Desert Rendezvous auction that
evening. Artwork can also be purchased outright.
Proceeds from the auction help support the
Museum’s education programs. Your purchase
not only allows you to own original artwork
by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists,
but it also enables the Museum to bring quality
science, art and history education to lifelong
learners throughout the region.

Norma Alonzo

Norma Alonzo is an accomplished artist who has been
painting for over 25 years. She began as a landscape
painter but transitioned to a variety of different genres,
including portraits and abstraction. Norma’s paintings
are characterized by her use of bright colors and gestural
brushstrokes. Her work has been exhibited in such venues
as the International Museum of Art, Texas; The Royal
Institute of Oil Painters, London; The Wausau Museum of
Contemporary Art, Wisconsin; the Orange County Center
for Contemporary Art and the U.S. Embassy residence in
Windhoek, Namibia.

JaNeil Anderson

JaNeil Anderson was raised on her parents’ farm on
the Gila River in Arizona. She has lived and worked on
various cattle ranches in the Southwest. Her oil paintings
reflect that experience as well as her love for the lifestyle
of American cowboys and ranchers. JaNeil’s work has
been included in The Russell Exhibition and Sale (2010,
2012 and 2017), Trappings of Texas (2016 and 2017),
Summer Stampede (2015, 2016 and 2017), Miniatures by
the Lake (2012 to the present), Traces of the West (2015)
Bosque Art Classic (2005 to the present) and Icons of the
West, where she won the Best of Figurative award.

Willo Balfrey
Valley Gold, 2017

Pastel

Willo Balfrey has used pastels and oils for a number of
years and also teaches art. Willo received Master Circle
Pastelist status from the International Association of
Pastel Societies in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has had
paintings accepted into the Pastel Society of America’s
shows in New York. Her work was included in Pure Color,
published in June 2007. During the summer she can be
found working en plein air. She brings her field sketches
back to the studio for interpretation and development into
future paintings.

Celeste Bergin

Celeste Bergin is an oil painter living in Portland, Oregon.
Her initial training was in graphic design, but she has
since developed a style that is rooted in traditional
realism and impressionism. Her work is informed by

manner of the French Impressionists. Her work has been
included in The Pacific Northwest Plein Air Competition

Rudi Broschofsky

Rudi Broschofsky’s work presents a modern look at
otherwise traditional Western subject matter through
the use of intricate stencils, spray paint and resin.
Often mistaken for screen prints, his paintings are
constructed entirely out of spray paint in conjunction with
a painstaking process of creating meticulous stencils by
hand with an X-ACTO knife. His paintings are colorful,
and the subject matter is bold and powerful. Rudi is
represented by several galleries including Modern West
Fine Art in Salt Lake City, Utah; Broschofsky Galleries
in Sun Valley, Idaho; Rare Gallery in Jackson Hole,
Wyoming; Red Door Design House in Hailey, Idaho; and
Flat Blak Gallery in Portland, Oregon.

Pamela Claflin

Pamela Claflin has spent much of her life exploring the
natural landscape. Her deep love for wildlife refuge
areas and state and national parks and their habitats is
reflected in several of her works. Pamela paints in oil
on location and in the studio. She is a member of the

America and Plein Air Washington Artists. She

Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University.
Subsequently, she studied botanical painting at the

her Bend studio. Jeanne is a member of the American
Society of Botanical Artists. She has exhibited at the

Sharon Engel

Rod Frederick

specifically “landscape” or “nature” photos. Rather, they

with representational imagery to evoke the landforms
of Oregon and Washington. Her work has been selected

She is a member of the National Watercolor Society,

Nations in southeastern Montana, describes himself as a

Western Art Collector and the art issue of Western Art
& Architecture. Ben’s work was included in the Creative
Indigenous Collective group show at the Wyoming State
Museum. He has also exhibited at museums throughout
Montana, including the Paris Gibson Square Museum
of Art in Great Falls, the Yellowstone Art Museum in
Billings and the Bigfork Art & Cultural Center.

Dave Sellers is a landscape and wildlife painter from
California. Dave has been the California Ducks Unlimited
and the California Waterfowl Association artist of the
year. He was among the youngest artists to be asked to
exhibit his work at the internationally recognized
Birds in Art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art
Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. His “Notebook” paintings
are inspired by the notes and sketches of cowboy artist
Charles M. Russell. With Dave’s active life, carrying
small notebook-sized, prepared surfaces is the only
practical way to express himself in art while on long
backcountry trips.

Samantha Sherry

Samantha Sherry spent much of her childhood on
horseback. She competed nationally in barrel racing
events and was a member of her university rodeo team.
While a freshman in college, she took her first art class
and quickly decided to pursue a degree in art. After
earning her bachelor of fine arts, she was accepted
into the masters of fine arts program at the Memphis
College of Art in Tennessee. Samantha exhibits her work

Matt Sterbenz’s goal is to achieve a greater understanding
of the landscape that surrounds him. As an avid hiker
he enjoys depicting the landscape from vantage points
that many would otherwise overlook. Rather than
simply portraying a landscape, Matt aims to paint the
experience of being outdoors. His paintings have a light,
atmospheric feel to them. Matt has participated in some
of the nation’s top plein air events, including the Grand
Canyon Celebration of Art, Sedona Plein Air Festival and
the Pacific Northwest Plein Air event. His work has
also appeared in publications including Southwest Art
and Plein Air.

Yong Hong Zhong

Yong Hong Zhong developed a keen interest in drawing
at an early age. His passion for drawing led him to obtain
a degree in illustration and art history from the Pratt
Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Yong was recruited by
Disney Animation Studios shortly after graduation and
worked on feature films for 14 years. Since then, Yong
has focused on his passion for fine art painting. He has
participated in numerous plein air competitions on both
coasts and has won many awards. Yong’s paintings are
in the permanent collections of the Maryhill Museum of
Art in Washington, Lake Oswego City Hall and Hillsboro
City Hall in Oregon.

Dennis Ziemienski

1999 after a successful career in illustration. His

including the 2014 Jesse Arms Botke Award and the

Exhibition Award. Dennis was selected as the official
artist of the 2006 Kentucky Derby. Dennis’ work is in

Art, Bakersfield Museum of Art, the Booth Western Art
Museum, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the
West and the Whitney Western Art Museum at the
Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
