Processor
Constructed
Flip Book



Your word processor can be you
best friend. Your very best friend
when it comes to making those
needed electronic resources for
your classroom. It takes a little
modi;ication of the basic
document. When that is done, save
the empty document. That creates
a template. You can then use the
template to create your e-material.
No need to be shy. If you could
create the basic worksheet in your

word processor, you can create a
simple document that will allow
you to create an AnyFlip.com ;lip
book.
Right now, I’m
writing in my word
processor. Yes,
trusty old MS Word
is going to do all the work for me.

That work can consist of actually
sitting here and writing. It can also
consist of go out somewhere,
harvesting text, and pasting it into
my current document.
Understand what that means.
Many of you will have spent a
considerable amount of time
curating materials from the
Internet. But just how useful are
these materials?

I’ve always remembered life guard
training. We were taught:
• Throw
• Row
• Go
That sequence represented the
order in which we should execute a
water rescue. If you have
something, and if it will work,
throw it to the drowning person.

Why? You don’t want him to end
up drowning both of you!
Nothing to throw or she is out of
reach for throwing? Then take to
the life guard boat. Row. But
remember how easily a thrashing,
drowning person can capsize your
boat.
Only as a last resort, put yourself
in the water and go to their rescue.

True, this is a rule set focused on
the safety of the life guard.
Now, let’s look at a rule set focused
on the safety and sanity of the
teacher.
• Adopt
• Adapt
• Develop

If there is something out there you
can use AS IS, by all means use it.
However, we all know that the best
teachers personalize the materials
they make. Perhaps ;ive percent of
what we ;ind can be used AS IS.
Often with just a little work — a
little tweaking — we can modify
that wonderful material so it is
JUST RIGHT for OUR students.
This is stage two: adapt.

Most of what teachers provide for
students — especially regular
education students — should be
material they adapt. And the art of
adaptation of materials is where
this booklet comes in. You can
harvest the text from the original
source (being prepared to give full
attribution), modify it, and then do
a layout for the publication of your
very own e-materials for your
students.

Part two of Publishing AnyFlip Flip
Books gave you the starting
mechanics in a graphic passage
format. You won’t be starting out
there. Text is likely your starting
point. But you need to have the

modi;ied template in place before
your start. If you have done that
bit of front-end work, the rest
often literally “;lows into place.”
Let’s look at an example. To avoid
any copyright issues, I’m going to
use something I produced for
distribution. It’s an open
educational resource. It’s written
by me, but it’s free for you to use as

your choose. Personally, I don’t
even care if you attribute it to me.
I’m going to slide a divider into this
textual passage. After the divider,
I’ve done nothing but copy an
paste the text from a web page I’ve
published.
Okay! Stand by! Below this line all
I’ve done is copy and paste.

Creation of the National Assembly
Read this page out loud to me
Louis XVI and his ministers are
uncertain. What should they do
with the run away Estates General?
Louis XVI called the Estates
General to raise taxes. Members of
the Estates General have spent
their time attacking the king. The
nobility is calling him a tyrant. The

nobles want back their traditional
powers. They have been grabbed
by the absolute monarchy.
The First Estate, the clergy, are
griping. They object to the idea of
paying any taxes. God’s church
should not pay taxes.
The Third estate is a hot bed of
dissatisfaction. The list of
complains from members of the

Third Estate is long. Merchants
complain of laws and taxes that
make business dif;icult. The
servant class in the cities complain.
They can’t afford more taxes with
the current high prices and high
rents.
And the peasants, who are most of
the population in France, complain
of how high their taxes are. Fifty
percent or more of what they earn

goes to government or the local
noble. How is a peasant to live?
How can a starving peasant pay
more taxes. Is the king crazy?
Finally, the king and his ministers
take action. They lock the Third
Estate out of its meeting chambers.
The royal government seals and
locks the doors. Guards stand at
the doorway. When members of
the Third Estate come to meet,

they are turned away by armed
soldiers.
Members of the Third Estate look
for another place to gather. They
choose the king’s indoor tennis
court. It’s unlocked and open.
They gather there to discuss what
just happened. Most members of
the Third Estate feel the King
wants to send them home.

They make an agreement and take
an oath to abide by their
agreement. This agreement and
the oath are called the Tennis
Court Oath.
Members agree to
1. Remain in Paris and not be sent
home by the king.

2. Announce that the Third Estate
alone represents the people of
France. Actually, the Third Estate is
gone. Instead, there is now the
National Assembly of France.
Members of the Second and First
Estate may join the National
Assembly. But members of the old
Third Estate must be it’s majority.
They are the majority of France’s
population

3. Create a document stating the
Rights of Frenchmen. This will
become what is called The
Declaration of the Right of Man
and the citizen.
4. Write a constitution outlining a
constitutional monarchy in France.
This will be a long running project.
The National Assembly is a
Revolutionary act. It takes control

of the government from the king. It
gives control of government to the
representatives of all the French
people. The position of King is not
abolished. Instead, the King has
only the powers given him by the
people. That means only the
powers given him by vote of the
French Constitution. The
constitution is written by the
National Assembly.

In Austria and Prussia there is
alarm. These two kingdoms see the
National Assembly destroying the
power of monarchs. Both Austria
and Prussia warn the French
Revolutionaries. In particular they
are warning members of the
National Assembly. Mess with the
job of king and we’ll march into
France and rid the country of all of
you.

The National Assembly takes this
Pilsen Declaration as a threat of
war. That’s because it is. The
National Assembly decides to act
;irst. It declares war on Austria on
20 August.
The Prussians, not the Austrians,
invade France. The war goes
poorly for the French. The army
looses battle after battle. That’s

not like a French Army, the terror
of Europe.
France is being betrayed. That’s
what many Frenchmen believe.
They suspect spies everywhere.
Increasing, numbers of Frenchmen
believe that the head of the spy
ring is King Louis XVI himself.
Only a year earlier, Louis and
Marie Antoinette had packed up.

They climbed into a carriage. They
headed to the border with the
Netherlands. Just before they got
to the border they were stopped. It
was apparent. They were heading
to a fort ;illed with royals
supporters. They were attempting
a comeback. Louis was trying to
become an absolute monarch
again.

The royal couple is put under
arrest. They are locked in a palace
in Paris. Now, with the war going
badly, people are sure they are
feeding military plans to the
Prussians.
Public opinion turns ugly.
Action will be taken in the National
Assembly to deal with the issue of
“royal treason.”

graphics into your word processor
;iles.
Make the second set of
modi;ications.
Save the resulting work.
Convert the saved word processor
document to PDF.

You are just about there.

Text needs to be LARGE
to be seen on the tiny
screens of smart phones. And it is
smart phones that will be in the

hands of most of yours students. If
you want a universal e-book, it

text on a page must be AT LEAST
24 pt to be seen without dif;iculty.
