Best Bloomin’ Town

Grinnell’s downtown is in full bloom during
the warm months, flooded with vibrant pink
and purple flowers cascading over the sides
of the planters and hanging baskets. A few
years ago, Our Iowa Magazine named Grinnell
the “Best Bloomin’ Town In Iowa.” A dedicated
group of gardeners design and plant the
flowers each spring. Thirty-two large planters
and nearly 100 hanging baskets adorn the
downtown.

DIDKYNOOUW? The Grinnell College men’s basketball team is known for their fast-paced style of play, often
called“The Grinnell System. ”The System incorporates a continual full-court press, a fast-paced
offense, an emphasis on offensive rebounding, a barrage of three-point shots and substitutions
of five players at a time every 30 to 40 seconds. The team has set numerous NCAA scoring records
and several players have led the nation in scoring or assists. One of Grinnell’s players, Jack Taylor,
broke the school’s scoring record as well as the NCAA scoring record when he scored 138 points
in a single game in November of 2012. One year later, Taylor scored 109 points in a game and
became the first player in NCAA history to have two 100-point games.

MERCHANTS NATIONAL BANK /
LOUIS SULLIVAN JEWEL BOX BANK

The crown jewel of Grinnell’s architectural
heritage is the Merchants National Bank,
which turned100 years old on January 1,
2015. The bank is one of eight Midwestern
“jewel-box” banks designed by Louis Sullivan,
legendary American architect and mentor
of Frank Lloyd Wright. Housing a bank from
1915 to 1999, it is now home to the Grinnell
Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce.
Thousands of admirers visit the bank
annually, and our community adopted the
motif as the focus of our “Jewel of the Prairie”
theme.

PAGLIAI’S PIZZA

Pagliai’s is a favorite with locals and visitors
alike. The family-owned pizzeria serves
thousands of pizzas each week, going
through 12,000 pounds of cheese, 9,000
pounds of flour, and 10,000 gallons of tomato
sauce every month among its three central
Iowa locations. Try the Pagliai’s Special and
savor the crispy thin crust and the fresh
ingredients. Diners may discover a few
Pagliai’s family secrets as they watch the
pizzas prepared in the open kitchen and slid
into the stone hearth ovens.
