Introduction

Welcome to Core Banking Applications (CBA)!
Core Banking Applications is an integral part of FNB Premium and the greater FNB Bank.
Together, we strive to enable other segments of the bank and FirstRand Group to achieve their
long-term vision, to grow and innovate the FNB brand.
We have a strong owner-manager culture within FNB and as Core Banking Applications, we
have aligned our core values to the FNB to embrace this as the cornerstone of our business and
philosophy.
We are a diverse group of highly driven and talented individuals who have a passion for IT,
underpinned by a management and Exco team who believe in their teams and empower them to
deal with day to day responsibilities.
Our largest and most valuable asset in Core Banking Applications is you, our staff, and your
curiosity to constantly explore, challenge, and innovate our world of technology around us,
looking at the “Art of the Possible” within our ecosystem and the FNB ecosystem. Taking our IT
systems to the next level – “Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime, Any device” by re-engineering,

3. Human Resources

Premium Core Banking Applications (CBA) has an empowering owner-manager culture. Our
people are critical to the success of the organisation. The FirstRand’s philosophy is to invest in
passionate and committed people by empowering people, holding them accountable and
rewarding them appropriately. This is the cornerstone for FNB employee engagement.

The purpose of Human Resource Management (HRM) is to guide business on how to
strategically manage people as business resources. This includes managing recruiting and hiring
employees, though our CBA talent sourcing team, coordinating employee benefits and
suggesting employee training and development strategies.

We believe that through effective training our employees, CBA can achieve success within teams
and reach their full potential. This plays a role in reduction of external recruitment and make
maximum use of the existing talent and is a cost-effective way for the business to manage its
people.

At CBA, we encourage people to continuously build their skills and enhance their knowledge
base. CBA invests in the learning and development of its employees by offering financial
assistance to employees who seek to obtain or build on a tertiary qualification through various
Learnerships, bursaries and career-building study assistance.

5. Staff engagement programmes

5.1.1 Core Banking Applications - All Stars

CBA ALL Stars is our staff recognition programme that acknowledges the exceptional
achievements and contributions of CBA employees. This programme has been developed to
recognize and reward people who stand out for their effort, innovation and insight they bring to
CBA.
CBA All Stars originates from FNBWAY, the FNB Premium Segment All Stars programme, which
aims to recognize the top performers throughout the segment. To learn more about the CBA All

5.1.2 CSI – Volunteers
Volunteering, as part of the FNB Volunteer Employee Programme is your opportunity as a
FirstRand staff member to make a difference in someone’s life, by helping people in need across
South Africa.

A volunteer is someone like you. Someone who wants to “give something back” to the
community without concern for financial benefit.

Volunteering is therefore considered a part-time, active job whereby work is executed with
devotion, willingness, integrity and in support of your chosen organisation. People give of their
time and pool resources to enhance the lives of others and, in so doing, also enhance and enrich
the community at large. Kinds of volunteering initiatives include the Vita Nova Centre, five
hostels, the Stimulation Centre which focuses on developing the individual skills needed for the
enjoyment of a happy and meaningful life, as well as YLED which imparts life skills for success
and develops the entrepreneurial spirit amongst in-school learners and out of school youth from
historically disadvantaged and urban communities, by up-skilling and preparing them for the
future.
The FNB CBA Volunteers is part of the FirstRand Volunteer Programme and as such receives
financial support for time spent volunteering at a charity and or for funds received through staff
donations.

All matched funding claims are paid out by FirstRand Volunteers into a FNB Volunteers account
to be utilised by the respective committees to support their chosen and beneficiary organisations.

5.1.3 Soccer Team

Core Banking Applications is the home to the CBA Soccer Team, captained by Thulani Mkhize.
The team players are all from CBA and the team is managed by Refilwe Baloi.
The team promotes diversity and inclusion and has opportunities to play in front of family, friends,
colleagues and the community. They play regularly against other teams and their colleagues are
eager to follow their progress.
The CBA Soccer Team represents CBA’s fabric of community identity and pride.
5.1.4 Fun Committee

“The Fun Freedom Front”
The CBA Fun Committee is charged with identifying, organising and providing events and
activities that enhance the social environment of the workplace.

The purpose is to foster a cohesive community for the entire CBA. Fun events include desk drops
and competitions for Valentine, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Youth Day, Heritage Day,
Spring Day and Christmas.

5.1.5 Health and Safety Committee
Occupational Health and Safety embraces the concepts of Accountability and Helpfulness to
ensure a Safe and Secure Working Environment within Core Banking Applications,
FNB/FirstRand.

The health and safety of all employees are necessary to ensure the enhancement of productivity
and efficiency at all levels and areas. Lack of safety measures can create havoc for the
organization and negatively affect the working criterion of an organization. The Committee’s
mandate is to devise and implement effective safety procedures to reduce hazards and prevent
accidents in the workplace. Employees do believe that safer working conditions enhance their
ability to work because they do not feel scared in troublesome situations.

Safety in the work force is an important aspect that many organizations of today’s world
disregard. Many people face mishaps and accidents in various situations especially due to
negligence, recklessness, and carelessness. Many accidents and serious injuries are avoidable
and preventable by taking effective safety measures and reducing hazards.

The Team consists of:
o Section 16(2) Executive
o Committee Chairperson
o First Aiders (Level 1 and Level 2)
o Fire Marshalls
o Fire Wardens

We have quarterly meetings and compile reports and follow up with FNB Maintenance to make
sure anything that is hazardous or seems out of place is taken care of immediately.
Our team take their additional roles seriously and we make sure our certification is always up to
date or renewed to maintain valid information, also to ensure that Core Banking Applications is
fully compliant with respect to:

FNB/FirstRand “Risk and Compliance” as well as The Republic of South Africa’s “Department of
Labour”.
