4.0 BUILDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ESL TEACHERS
4.1 MENTOR-MENTEE OF 2019

What Mentee needs to prepare:
• A FILE to keep all documents related to the programme (Online/ Hard copy)
What Mentor needs to do in order to assist:
• Equip oneself with best teaching practice
• Share knowledge and experience with the mentee
• Guide mentee on all aspects involved in TESL (PdPc/Assessment)
Structure of Mentor-Mentee 2019
i. 2-way Observations and Lesson Planning (February till October 2019)
• Begins with an observation of mentor’s class. Mentee is to take note of teaching
skills/techniques used in the said lesson. Mentee is to write a reflection on best
practices used if there is any seen during the observation.
• Next, mentee shows a lesson plan ahead of mentee’s observation. Discussion
can be conducted if there is a need. Otherwise, proceed with the mentee’s
classroom observation.
• Review and discussion are to be conducted after the observation in mentee’s
classroom. Strengths and aspects to be improved can be presented.
• This process is recommended to be done at least 3 times throughout the said
period. Record of any interaction of any sorts between mentor and mentee to be
kept in the file.
ii. Mentee’s Reflection (after each observation)
• To write at least 120 words on strengths and aspects to be improved during the
observation, review and discussion of mentee’s classroom
• Record of any interaction of any sorts between mentor and mentee to be kept in
the file.
iii. Assessment in TESL
• As informed, there would be 3 school level examination known as AR1, AR2
and AR3, be it lower form/upper form.
• Hence, there are of course techniques of teaching and useful tips that can be
learnt from the mentor.
• Mentor is suggested to carry out a private lesson/private lessons on these exam
techniques (be it SPM structured papers or NEW FORM 3 papers) wherever
necessary. It has come to light that exam techniques would help students to
score better marks on exam.
• Record of any interaction of any sorts between mentor and mentee to be kept in
the file.
iv. Grammar/Speaking lesson (if necessary)
• As the name suggested, it is up to the mentor and mentee to decide if such lesson
is needed. The purpose of such lesson if to be held, is to improve classroom
instructional language and of course to ensure the right teaching of grammar to
the clients.
• Record of any interaction of any sorts between mentor and mentee to be kept in
the file.
