When it comes to being a new parent,
you’re damned if you do and damned if you
don’t. Brilliantly funny and painfully true,
Cry It Out confronts the pressure to have
it all when having it all is a giant lie.

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

This season, City Theatre is celebrating 45 years of creating
theatre in Pittsburgh. We are proud of the work that has given us a national

presence, but we are first and foremost committed to our Pittsburgh actors, designers,
and audiences. This is a great theatre town, with talent and taste everywhere.

Founded in 1975, City Theatre began as the City Players, a touring company that
performed in schools, parks, and public housing locations. By the end of the decade, the
City Players were offered residency at the University of Pittsburgh, and with an official
home, City Theatre was born. I was fortunate to join the team in the early 1980s and
inaugurated the former 115-seat performance space on Bouquet Street in Oakland.
I know so many of our audience members have been with us since our early days and we
are immensely grateful that you have stuck by and followed us to the South Side in 1991.
Countless evenings of memorable theatre have been made and shared.

The cast and creative team for Downstairs represents well over 200 years of Pittsburgh
theatre experience. Many folks have been with City Theatre since its early days and we
take great pride in being a place where people have made an artistic home. Helena
Ruoti’s career in Pittsburgh started in the mid-1970s at (you guessed it) City Players.
All three of the actors on our stage today have been named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
“Performer of the Year:” 1984-85 — Helena Ruoti: Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare
Fest), Crimes of the Heart (City), Extremities (Playhouse), and Becoming Memories
(Public), 2002 — Martin Giles: The Gigli Concert (PICT); Fuddy Meers, Christopher
Durang’s A Christmas Carol, and Inventing Van Gogh (City). 2008 — John Shepard:
Death of a Salesman (Playhouse Rep). Scenic Designer Tony Ferrieri is celebrating
40 years with City Theatre (Downstairs marks his 238th design on our stages, a small
section of the over 600 plays he has designed in his career). Angela Vesco and Steve
Shapiro have long been celebrated for their work in town and behind the scenes,
Technical Director Paul Ford and Scenic Artist Leah Blackwood each have over 20 years
of making our sets look world-class. These are only a few of the top notch artists and
theatre-makers who are working on this production.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our audience, many of
whom also share these collective memories. Thank you for supporting this creative home
nestled in the South Side. Thank you for believing in our mission, our artists, and our city.

THERESA REBECK (Playwright) has many plays that have been widely

produced on and off Broadway, regionally, and internationally. Last fall, her fourth

Broadway play, Bernhardt/Hamlet, premiered on Broadway and her play Downstairs
opened at Primary Stages starring Tim Daly and Tyne Daly. Other Broadway works

include Dead Accounts, Seminar, and Mauritius. Other notable NY and regional
plays include: Seared, The Scene, The Water’s Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann
and Spike Heels (Second Stage), Bad Dates, The Butterfly Collection and Our House
(Playwrights Horizons), The Understudy (Roundabout), View of the Dome (NYTW),
What We’re Up Against (Women’s Project), Omnium Gatherum (Pulitzer Prize
finalist). As a director, her work has been seen at The Alley Theater of Houston, Dorset Theater Festival, the

Orchard Project, and the Folger Shakespeare Theater. She recently wrote and directed the independent feature

Trouble, starring Anjelica Huston, Bill Pullman and David Morse. In television, she is best known for her work on
“NYPD Blue” and for creating the NBC series “Smash.” As a novelist, Rebeck’s books include Three Girls and
Their Brother and I'm Glad About You. Rebeck is the recipient of the William Inge New Voices Playwriting Award,
the PEN/Laura Pels Foundation Award, a Lilly Award, and more.

DOWNSTAIRS 9

Questioning Theresa Rebeck is a singular voice in the
American Theatre. An acclaimed
Authority: playwright, director, screenwriter, and
Theresa novelist (to name a few of her many hats),
Rebeck is the most produced female
playwright on Broadway of our time. Her
work spans the gamut from her sharply
written debut Spike Heels to last season’s
Rebeck epic Bernhardt/Hamlet. As Rebeck said in a
recent phone call, “I do write different
kinds of plays, because I get a little bored
on the writing the same play over again.”
origins of Downstairs is a more intimate piece in her
catalog and the impulse behind its creation
was quite personal. “I [had] never written a
brother/sister play and I was curious about
Downstairs it. I have a lot of brothers and sisters.”
Rebeck initially wrote the play for actors
Tyne and Tim Daly, who performed in the
by Clare Drobot piece’s first two productions.

The siblings had never worked on stage together before and so Rebeck created a
fictional sibling pair in the characters of Teddy and Irene. Teddy was Rebeck’s way
into the script and there’s an element of the author in his character. “I was
attracted to Teddy’s unbound ability to say the truth. He’s a truth-sayer and that
is what makes him so lost in the world. He can’t fit in, so when it comes to Irene,
his sister, there’s a sense of home that he’s looking for. It feels deeply personal to
me that way. I’ve had my fair share of experiences where I felt like an outsider,”
Rebeck explained. “When I was younger, I used to have terrible anxiety attacks
that someday I might be homeless. It was sort of a fantasy/fear of how to fit into
a world that often feels just totally mystifying to me—like maybe more now than
ever. I was thinking about when people don’t fit in, there’s a kind of madness that
is assumed. People look at you and think, ‘Well, they’re unstable.’, when it really
might just be a question of not fitting in. In this way, I’m also like Teddy. I just
don’t understand rules. I’m skeptical of all of them. When they’re delivered with
love and affection and real authority, I’m fine, but generally I’m just like ‘What is
going on here?’.”

This dynamic is replicated in the back and forth between Teddy and Irene. Both
are in need of acceptance and understanding, while also confronting different

10 DOWNSTAIRS

power systems—be they external like Teddy’s workplace encounters or the very
internal looming presence of Irene’s husband, Gerry. “There are so many places
in life, where everybody just wants us to behave. You’re supposed to show up at
work, your hair is supposed to be combed and it’s not in (Teddy’s) nature to
behave.” While Teddy may be challenging the power structure of this one
particular basement in this one particular house, his questioning has broader
ramifications. As Rebeck sees it, “I think the world is closer to being really
totalitarian than we think. I’m hoping that maybe this nonsense with the
government has shaken a lot of people up and we don’t feel the need to toe the
line quite so thoroughly.”
The ability to challenge audiences is part of what draws Rebeck as a playwright
back to theater time and again. “I feel that corporate entities are strangling
storytelling too much in America. The theatre, and perhaps
especially smaller theaters, are the places where the pureness
of a singular voice telling a story is central…The singular
voice of the storyteller is almost shamanistic. There is a
wisdom that the muse presents through one writer. What
I’m hoping for is theater that is challenging, funny and
emotional, and has a couple moments of
heartbreak. Work you can connect to in
a human way and also be entertained
by.” In honoring Rebeck’s intentions, we
hope when audiences leave Irene’s
basement, they too will find a personal
connection to each
sibling’s search for a
modicum of comfort
in our increasingly
complicated world.

DONOR RECOGNITION
THE ANNUAL FUND
Each season, we go on a journey. You take a chance on plays you’ve never

seen before, often by playwrights you might not know. Our pledge to you is that we scour the country for
the very best work possible—plays that speak truthfully, passionately, and urgently (and, of course,
entertainingly) about the here and now. New plays are risky, but they’re filled with the excitement of the
unknown, too. City Theatre is deeply grateful to our community for helping to sustain our theatre year
after year. Donors acknowledged here made gifts between July 1, 2018 - December 20, 2019. Every
effort has been made to accurately record and acknowledge all donors. If your name is listed incorrectly,

DONOR BENEFITS

The cast of F*ck7thGrade by Jill Sobule and Liza Birkenmeier at the Colorado New Play Festival.
F*ck7thGrade received a workshop at City Theatre before being selected for the prestigious Colorado New
Play Festival where they received a standing ovation. The world premiere will take place at City Theatre this
season. Photo credit: Bruce Thayer

WHY GIVE?

New plays are risky, but essential. New plays capture the tenor of

society and tell the unique stories of contemporary life. And City Theatre continues
to be a national leader in shaping the field. But ticket sales account for less than
30% of our annual budget – the rest comes from a generous network of
community contributors. We rely on the support of these donors so that artists
have the opportunity to create freely and boldly. This season’s F*ck7thGrade will
forever be known as having its world premiere in Pittsburgh and you make this
possible. From the earliest readings to stunning world premieres, our patrons and
artists together develop the future of the American theater. Please consider
making a tax-deductible contribution today.
