BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Sometimes a writer’s voice is so distinct that if you were to read a page

without attribution you would immediately know who wrote it. It might be the author’s
use of language, or fierce cultural commentary, or the embrace of heightened
theatricality that sets the playwright apart. Molly Smith Metzler is one such writer, but
it is her deep love and understanding of character that makes her plays so vivid and
alive. Molly can make you laugh and cry in the same instant because the people at the
core of her stories are so undeniably true. Her plays spring to life in the hands of
gifted performers because they are written with such a deep level of compassion and
understanding that it takes your breath away.

Several years ago, I was privileged to produce the world premiere of her play Elemeno
Pea at the Humana Festival of New American Plays. The play was subsequently
produced by City Theatre in the 2014/2015 season. I was so taken by her writing that
I commissioned her to write a new play, but it took several years to deliver as Molly’s
writing career had been interrupted when she became a new mother. This happened
at the same time that her career was taking off in Hollywood. Little did I know that she
would take her writer’s block and turn it into one of the most widely produced new
plays in the country. Cry It Out resonates with new parents, old parents, and people
who have never been parents at all. It is about four very different people who are
brought together by a common experience that they can barely comprehend – and how
the risks and vulnerabilities of this massive change bear down on them as they face
their futures.

If we do our job, you won’t be thinking about the voice of the writer. You will be
thinking about the people in the play and all of the complexities of class and
personality that make them who they are. You will be thinking about the truth of the
story and the nature of change. You may even think about people that you know.
Maybe later as you reflect, you can appreciate how a playwright crafts people out of
her experience that live on in our imaginations long after the lights go down. That is
the talent of a gifted writer.

CRY IT OUT 9

Cry It Out Close to four
million babies
are born in the
U.S. each year
and for many
new parents, as
Cry It Out playwright Molly Smith Metzler describes, “it’s a period of terror.”
Throw into the mix that the average new parent gets between five and six hours
of sleep a night (losing approximately 109 minutes of rest) and it’s a recipe for
emotions running high.
Cry It Out is a personal play for Metzler, the script was inspired by time she spent
on Long Island following the birth of her daughter. The characters of Jessie, Lina,
Mitchell, and Adrienne are in a watershed moment, grappling with the
responsibilities and anxieties inherent in caring for a tiny human. A common
theme which unites these disparate individuals is a degree of uncertainty about
what comes next for all four and the push and pull of balancing work life with
being a parent.
Currently in America, parents are allowed 12 weeks of unpaid leave through the
federal Family and Medical Leave Act (or FMLA). Passed in 1993, the FMLA
was a compromise at best, providing coverage for approximately 60% of the
work force—it does not cover companies with fewer than 50 employees and only
applies to employees who have been with their current employer for at least one
year. The United States is one of only a handful of countries in the world that
does not mandate paid parental leave for its populace. According to a 2018
statistic from the Department of Labor, only 17% of the civilian work force in
the US has access to paid family leave.
The benefits of offering paid parental leave are readily documented. They span
everything from improving infant mortality rates and early childhood
developmental outcomes to increasing individual life-time earnings capacity and
the likelihood of new parents, especially women, returning to the workplace and
remaining employed.
To complicate matters further, the desire to stay home with one’s child is not
universal. There is no shortage of opinions on the best decision for new mothers,
in particular, to make. As Metzler points out, “we have a default setting in how
we judge women about going back to work.” Increasingly two income households
are a necessity for much of the population, but what happens when either parent

10 CRY IT OUT

feels it’s in their child’s best interest to remain at home as the primary caregiver?
That decision (and privilege) to stay home with your child or return to work can
rely on a multitude of factors but is heavily influenced by financial agency.
According to a 2017 Pew Research Center study, 62% of workers in households
whose annual income was below $30,000 were only able to access unpaid leave, if
the leave was an option at
all. While the characters
in the play span a wide
cross section of the
socioeconomic spectrum,
part of what makes Cry It
Out so nuanced is that
Metzler refrains from
judging her characters.
They are each on their
own journeys and the
subtleties of their
individual relationships to
parenting are deeply felt.
In 2019, tucked inside the
budget of the National
Defense Authorization
Act, the two million
employees of the Federal
government gained 12
weeks of paid leave
beginning on October 20,
2020. While still
incomplete, perhaps it’s a
step in providing all
parents with the ability to
care for their children in
infancy and the right to
choose the best career
decisions for their family.

seen before, often by playwrights you might not know. Our pledge to you is that we scour the country for
the very best work possible—plays that speak truthfully, passionately, and urgently (and, of course,

after year. Donors acknowledged here made gifts between December 2018 - February 2020. Every effort
has been made to accurately record and acknowledge all donors. If your name is listed incorrectly, please

The cast of F*ck7thGrade by Jill Sobule and Liza Birkenmeier at the Colorado New Play Festival.
F*ck7thGrade received a workshop at City Theatre before being selected for the prestigious Colorado New
Play Festival where they received a standing ovation. The world premiere will take place at City Theatre this
season. Photo credit: Bruce Thayer

WHY GIVE?

New plays are risky, but essential. New plays capture the tenor of

society and tell the unique stories of contemporary life. And City Theatre continues
to be a national leader in shaping the field. But ticket sales account for less than
30% of our annual budget — the rest comes from a generous network of
community contributors. We rely on the support of these donors so that artists
have the opportunity to create freely and boldly. This season’s F*CK7thGRADE will
forever be known as having its world premiere in Pittsburgh and you make this
possible. From the earliest readings to stunning world premieres, our patrons and
artists together develop the future of the American theater.
