PUBLICKPRINCE GEORGE’S
PLAYHOUSE

FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

THE MARYLAND-NATIONAL CAPITAL PARK AND PLANNING COMMISSION,
DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION, PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Welcome

If you are new to the Publick Playhouse, we are very happy you are
here! Every season we present a variety of performances. There is
something for everyone in your family to enjoy!
A wholehearted Welcome Back! to those of you who have already
discovered the wealth of outstanding entertainment presented each
season by the Publick Playhouse and—like all of us here—can’t wait
to return for the exceptional concerts, plays, movies, classes, and
our 40th year anniversary celebration.
The 2017–18 season sparkles with extraordinary performances. We
launch the season with jazz great T.S. Monk in concert, paying tribute
to the 100th birthday of his father, Thelonious Monk, in an incredible
performance that includes both legendary and newly-discovered
compositions. Regina Belle, Shirley Jones, Heatwave, and Mandy
Harvey are among the acclaimed artists performing here for the first
time, and we are delighted to welcome back Jeff Majors, Mike Wiley,
The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) and Dallas Black
Dance Theatre, all beloved and celebrated performers.
Finally, please let us know what you think—talk to the staff while you
are here, send us an email, or give us a call so that we can continue
to serve you with the best possible performances and programs.
We look forward to seeing you at The Playhouse!

— Staff of the Publick Playhouse

THE PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, the flagship of
the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. Designed in the art deco style by John Everson,
it was one of the first public spaces in the area to have air conditioning. In the late 1960s,
the theatre fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park
and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration,
preserving many of the art deco elements of the building. In 1977, the building was
re-opened as the Publick Playhouse, and since then has been a superior cultural resource
that presents outstanding performances, classes, and art exhibitions for all ages.

ART
EXHIBITIONS

SEPTEMBER 15–NOVEMBER 10, 2017 Alma Selimovic

Alma Selimovic

Artist Reception: Thursday October 19, 7-9 pm

Selimovic is a local artist investigating the “humanness” of diverse peoples
and communities. An immigrant from Bosnia, she seeks to present the
beauty and uniqueness of individuals, the liveliness that persist despite the
struggles of migration, exclusion and even oppression. Through a dynamic
mix of media, she invites the viewer to experience the vivid and often
complex fabric that forms contemporary communities across the world.

Michael Moses

Artist Reception: Thursday, December 7, 7–9 pm

Michael’s background in the plastic arts has given him a fascination with
materials that compels a closer look. He magnifies a minute area of a
painting, to reveal abstract compositions that occur organically in the work.
Alluring patterns, colors and textures are center stage in his photography,
seeking to lure and tantalize the eye.

Local Women in Abstraction

Artist Reception: Tuesday, March 13, 7–9 pm

In recent years, many art institutions have sought to give recognition to women
artists who historically were not represented in important collections, exhibitions,
or books. This exhibition seeks to build on this momentum by celebrating local
female artists investigating various mediums and modes of abstract expression.
Line, shape, color, texture, space and form are the universal tools that these
artists employ to communicate the ethereal, the mundane and the simply
sublime.

MAY 4– JUNE 23, 2018 Katherine Hart

Katherine Hart

Artist Reception: Thursday, May 10, 7–9 pm

Hart works with encaustic techniques to cast stories among layers of pigment
and wax. Inspired by everything that surrounds or encounters her, she does not
premeditate, but rather lets the materials direct the course of the work. The result
is a composition emboldened by her organic pursuit, the inherent emotions and
challenges of that pursuit—a vivid example of art imitating life.
