If you are new to the Publick Playhouse, we are very happy you are
here! Every season we present a variety of performances. There is
something for everyone in your family to enjoy!
A wholehearted Welcome Back! to those of you who have already
discovered the wealth of outstanding entertainment presented each
season by the Publick Playhouse and—like all of us here—can’t wait
to return for the exceptional concerts, plays, movies, classes, and
our 40th year anniversary celebration. 
The 2017–18 season sparkles with extraordinary performances. We
launch the season with jazz great T.S. Monk in concert, paying tribute
to the 100th birthday of his father, Thelonious Monk, in an incredible
performance that includes both legendary and newly-discovered
compositions. Regina Belle, Shirley Jones, Heatwave, and Mandy
Harvey are among the acclaimed artists performing here for the first
time, and we are delighted to welcome back Jeff Majors, Mike Wiley,
The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) and Dallas Black
Dance Theatre, all beloved and celebrated performers.

THE PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, the flagship of
the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. Designed in the art deco style by John Everson,
it was one of the first public spaces in the area to have air conditioning. In the late 1960s,
the theatre fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park
and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration,
preserving many of the art deco elements of the building. In 1977, the building was
re-opened as the Publick Playhouse, and since then has been a superior cultural resource
that presents outstanding performances, classes, and art exhibitions for all ages.

to present performances honoring Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History

Celebration of Thelonious Monk

Celebrate the 100th birthday of jazz icon Thelonious Monk with his son
T.S. Monk, who carries on his father’s legacy in a memorable performance
that includes newly discovered compositions as well as the celebrated pieces
that made his father a legend. An illustrious jazz musician in his own right,
T.S. Monk along with his ensemble pays tribute to the man called the “High
Priest of Bebop” and “Father of Modern Jazz” in a performance of tremendous,
swinging, eternal jazz.

¡Azúcar al rojo! A Celebration
of Latin Dance

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an extravaganza of Latin American
dance. This mesmerizing showcase of music and movement features
professional dancers from Mexico, Bolivia, and throughout the Latin world,
whose swirling skirts, tapping boots, and pulsating beats transform the
Playhouse stage into a festival.

Heatwave

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 8 PM

Heatwave

Heatwave remains one of the most beloved groups of the 70s. This international
funk/disco band is best known for its successful songs “Boogie Nights”, “Always
and Forever”, and “The Groove Line”. Heatwave is still bringing the heat and they
are still a welcome sound to hear. So break out your bellbottoms, put on your
platforms, and get ready to dance all night.

PHILADANCO!

Dynamic, diverse, and dazzling, The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!)
electrifies audiences all over the world with its captivating choreography and
superbly trained dancers. Founded in 1970, the company is renowned for creating
thought-provoking dance pieces that reflect a range of modern dance styles and
evoke present-day events, performed with exhilarating vitality.

A Holiday Celebration with
Regina Belle

Grammy-award winner Regina Belle moves gracefully between R&B, jazz, soul
and gospel with hits such as “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme),” “Make It
Like it Was,” and “Baby Come to Me.” Performing seasonal favorites along with
her hit songs, Regina Belle will get you in the holiday spirit, so bring your friends,
family and loved ones for a special night of musical celebration.

Daniel Beaty: Emergency!

A slave ship suddenly appears in present-day New York City harbor, setting
off a series of events and reactions from more than two dozen characters, all
embodied in this astonishing, Obie award-winning, one-man performance.
Heralded by the Cincinnati CityBeat as “a masterful performer,” actor, poet,
singer, and writer Daniel Beaty (a regular of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam)
weaves a narrative that is a stirring commentary on what it is to be human
with the longing to be free.

Seoul to Soul

Music, drumming, and dancing are universal languages, and in honor of
the 2018 Winter Olympics, hosted by South Korea, the Coalition for African
Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) and the Korean American Cultural
Arts Foundation (KACAF) have joined together to celebrate the commonalities
and distinctions of these essential forms of expression. Fascinating, entertaining,
and joyous, this international multi-cultural event is perfect for the whole family.

Love Song: Shirley Jones
of the Jones Girls

Former lead singer of the Jones Girls, Shirley Jones sings your favorite R & B
songs and romantic ballads including her chart-topping “Who Can I Run To?”

the Mood” and “Feels Like Heaven.” Extend your Valentine’s Day celebration,

Crew Competition

A perennially sold-out performance, this competition features young, talented,
energetic dancers who compete for cash and other prizes. Buy your tickets early

Love 2 Dance Showcase

Don’t miss your chance to see the premiere dancers of the future, when the
best high school dancers in the D.C. area perform at the Publick Playhouse.
Representing studios and public and private high schools, the participating
troupes are jury-selected, based on their excellence and achievement in dance.

Andrea Frierson: Me and Ella

The life and music of The First Lady of Song is celebrated in this personal
tribute by Broadway actress and singer Andrea Frierson. A musical homage that
interweaves Frierson’s coming of age in 1960s New York City with the life of the
legendary Ella Fitzgerald, the performance finds fascinating common ground as
the two stories unfold.

Victory Boyd

Singer and guitarist Victory Boyd performs classic pop songs and original
compositions with a unique blend of soul, folk, and jazz elements. Her style
is youthful, mellow, and spiritual all at the same time, evoking shades of Tracy
Chapman, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone. Check out her videos on You Tube,
and then you’ll see why you won’t want to miss this concert.

Jeff Majors in Concert

Award-winning harpist and composer Jeff Majors successfully straddles gospel,
spiritual, and jazz styles when he returns with his versatile ensemble for another
Palm Sunday concert. Don’t miss this stirring performance of inspirational
favorites from his “Sacred” CD series, as well as selections of the sophisticated
jazz fusion pieces that have been the hallmark of his recent renaissance.

World Dance Showcase

This very popular showcase gives you the opportunity to travel the globe
from the comfort of your Publick Playhouse seat, when professional troupes
perform dances from a panoply of cultural traditions. Breathtaking costumes,
authentic music and the enchanting grace of the dancers will make you feel
like a world traveler.

Mandy Harvey

With effortless intonation and immaculate timing, jazz singer and songwriter
Mandy Harvey brings fresh delight to both standards and original work, so it’s
easy to understand why she is a contestant in season 12 of America’s Got
Talent. But what’s fascinating about Mandy is that, while studying for a career
as a choir director, she became almost completely deaf. In overcoming the
challenges of profound hearing loss she has inspired millions of fans who love
her impeccable interpretations of jazz hits and her imaginative, heartfelt,
original songs.

Xtreme Teens: 13th Film &
Discussion

A compelling 2016 documentary about the prison industry and mass
incarceration, 13th (TV-MA) takes its name from the Constitutional amendment,
which abolished slavery for everyone “except as a punishment for crime.” As
13th weaves through history, activism, racism and politics, the film exposes the
bleak soul of American criminal justice in this electrifying call to conscience.

Story District: Don’t Stop
the Music!

Story District turns personal stories into great performances when a troupe of
diverse storytellers comes to the Playhouse to share their experiences. Personal,
poignant, and often hilarious, these stories will have you laughing, sympathizing,
and cheering as each speaker shares an episode from their not-so-tranquil past.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre

Playhouse patrons flock to see Dallas Black Dance Theatre because of its
compelling and innovative choreography, magnificent dancers, and dance pieces
that speak to our collective experience. This year’s program includes a recent
work by DBDT’s new Artistic Director, Bridget L. Moore, “Southern Recollections:
For Romare Bearden,” a piece dedicated to the artist best known for his
powerful collages about African American life.

Joe Falero and the
Joe Falero Band

One of D.C.’s finest Latin performing groups. Joe Falero and his powerhouse
band will have you moving to the beat of your favorite Afro-Caribbean rhythms
as they raise the roof with their performance of familiar hits and original tunes in
styles that include Salsa, Bachata, Latin Jazz, and Merengue.

Afro Blue

This extraordinary “vocal big band” from Howard University calls to mind
Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, but Afro Blue
puts its own brilliant imprint on jazz song styles. The ensemble has been widely
hailed for its flawless technique and ingenious renditions of music that, while
primarily jazz, also includes traditional and popular melodies. Afro Blue has been
featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and NBC’s The Sing-Off, and has
performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and with Bobby McFerrin at
the 2011 D.C. Jazz Festival. A perfect Mother’s Day outing or just a great way to
spend a Sunday afternoon, Afro Blue performs jazz vocals at its very best.

Comedy Night: Alex Scott
and Friends

Born and raised in the D.C. area, Alex Scott has been featured on HBO’s Def
Comedy Jam and BET’s Coming to the Stage and Comic View and regularly
performs at the hottest clubs in New York and L.A. Get ready to laugh all night
long when he comes to the Playhouse stage with some of his funniest friends.

Men in Black: Mozart to Motown

The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) brings
another fascinating multi-genre program to the Playhouse, this time featuring
eight male singers with instrumental accompaniment performing works in a
variety of genres to include classical, jazz, Broadway, R&B, and more.

Antoné Chooky Caldwell

Antoné “Chooky” Caldwell is a Grammy-nominated producer and a key player
in D.C.’s jazz, soul, and hip-hop music scene. Performing contemporary jazz
with influences of R&B, soul, and gospel, Caldwell’s silky vocals and mastery of
numerous instruments make for a great way to spend a summer evening.

Kayla Waters Featuring Smooth
Jazz Star Kim Waters

Pianist, singer, and composer Kayla Waters is an ebullient performer whose
recent single “I Am” soared to #1 on Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Chart just 10
weeks after its debut. The daughter of internationally acclaimed smooth jazz
saxophonist Kim Waters, Kayla has performed all over the world with such
musical luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, and Avery Sunshine.
Featuring a special appearance by her father, Kim Waters, Kayla performs
selections from her new album Apogee as well as fan favorites, Kayla Waters’
tremendous talent brings a new, vivacious dimension to contemporary jazz.

FOR SENIORS AGES 60 AND BETTER

The Publick Playhouse offers a range of affordable, high quality
entertainment just for Seniors 60 and better. Platinum Live matinees
are approximately one hour long, giving seniors the opportunity to
experience the Playhouse’s most popular performances in a time
frame that is convenient and at a price that is affordable. Platinum
Movies present popular, topical films in the comfortable and relaxing
setting of the Publick Playhouse. All movies are presented with
closed captions, and audio-assist headphones are available, so that
everyone can enjoy the films.

Tribute to Sam Cooke and
Otis Redding

You’ll be transported back to one the great eras of soul and R&B with the hit
songs of musical giants Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. Otis Redding’s hits such
as “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” remain indelibly
woven into the fabric of the 60s, and Sam Cooke’s singable, danceable songs had
everyone “Twistin’ the Night Away.” “You Send Me,” “Chain Gang,” and more will
have you recalling the “Wonderful World” of these two iconic singers.

James Brown Experience

Relive the greatest hits of the Godfather of Soul with his legendary drummer

Mike Wiley: Breach of Peace

On May 24, 1961, 19-year-old Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in
Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New
Orleans—and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders
took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave
few. Actor and playwright Mike Wiley stars in this one-man play that is a living
monument to those remarkable men and women who faced violence and arrest
in their courageous fight for just and equal treatment for all.

Hidden Figures
Lena: A Moment with a Lady

Featuring Broadway Star, Syndee Winters

One of the most influential African American pioneers in entertainment, Lena
Horne shattered the color barrier in Hollywood, was deeply involved with the
civil rights movement, and collaborated with some of the greatest musical
artists of the 20th century. Broadway star Syndee Winters (Hamilton, Lion King,
Pippin), stars in this play with music that depicts the most pivotal personal and
professional moments of Horne’s remarkable life. On a mission to share the truth,
she unexpectedly opens the emotional crevices that have eluded her for years.
Relish, remember, and revel in this celebration of an exceptional woman.

Hidden Figures (2015)

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found
untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians who were
the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the
incredible true stories of three of these women, known as “human computers”,
we follow Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson as they
quickly rise through the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest
minds. Tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn
into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return, they crossed all gender, race, and
professional lines as their brilliance and desire to dream beyond anything ever
accomplished before by the human race firmly cemented them in U.S. history as
true American heroes.

Southside with You (2016)

In the summer of 1989, Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama go on their first
date. Described by The New Yorker as a “sharp-witted, perceptive drama”
and by Rolling Stone “gorgeously romantic,” this engaging film is both sweetly
romantic in its intimacy and epic in its historical connotation.

Reggie Wayne Morris
Blues Band

Reggie Wayne Morris calls his style “Boogie Woogie Rhythm & Rockin’ Blues,”
and you are sure to be tapping your toes during this concert specially created for
the Platinum audience. Inducted into the Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame,
the RWMB Band puts the show in show business when they perform classic and
original blues with verve and lots of soul.

Gospel Comedy with Ms. Gayle

This side-splitting Christian comic pokes fun at her country upbringing in rural
Virginia, TV shows, weight gain, and various hard knocks of life. A favorite at
Christian comedy, military and corporate shows, Ms. Gayle will have you rolling in
the aisles with her uproarious, but clean, commentary.

Skher Brown

Come and join us on Saturday afternoons for live performances
that are family friendly and outrageously fun for all ages.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2 PM

Capoeira Angola with Skher
Brown & The Dancing Warriors

The whole family will be dazzled by the spins, kicks, flips and live music of this
unusual art form, which has its origins in Central Africa but evolved in Brazil.
Learn a few words of Brazilian Portuguese as you join the call-and-response
songs and stories, and go onstage to participate in the movement and
drumming of this high-energy and interactive presentation.

The Cashore Marionettes:
Simple Gifts

The internationally acclaimed Cashore Marionettes redefine the art of puppetry Cashore Marionettes
with marionettes that are astounding in the range of emotion they convey. In
“Simple Gifts,” everyday episodes are transformed into humorous and sensitive photo by stuart dahne
stories that all ages will enjoy.

Kids’ Euro Fest

Kids Euro Festival is a two-week long festival of European arts and culture
presenting free activities to D.C. metro area children and their families. There are

Hart works with encaustic techniques to cast stories among layers of pigment

PRAISE Dance Festival Auditions

Liturgical dance companies, studios, ministries, and individual dancers are invited to audition for the annual
PRAISE Liturgical Dance Festival. In 2018, the Festival will be presented on Sunday, February 25, at 4 pm. An
informational workshop will be held Saturday, September 9 (see above) and is strongly recommended for all
applicants. Bring a CD of the music and audition one complete work in costume; the piece presented in the
audition should be one you wish to perform at the Festival. Auditions are by appointment, for an application

Annual World Dance Showcase

Dance companies and individuals are invited to audition traditional work in any culture-specific dance style.
Presentation must not exceed 15 minutes in length and must be auditioned in finished form with costumes.
Please audition the exact presentation to be performed at the final showcase. Dance groups will be selected
to perform in concert on Saturday, March 31, at 8 pm. Selected groups will receive an honorarium of $600.
Auditions are by appointment only and open to performers ages 16 years and older. Apply online at art.

Shakespeare in the Park

Prince George’s Shakespeare in the Parks brings free, entertaining and accessible productions of works by
the greatest playwright of the English language to communities throughout Prince George’s County, and
provides opportunities for county-based directors, designers, actors, and musicians to share their creativity
and expertise with county residents of all ages. All acting positions are paid; performances are scheduled
from July 10–22, 2018 in open-air locations in Prince George’s County. Auditioning actors must be 18 years
or older, and should present a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Actors need not be county
residents to audition. Auditions are by appointment only. To schedule, send email to Christopher Dwyer,

Box Office Ticket Policies: The Box Office accepts cash, checks, VISA and MasterCard. A $25 fee will be
assessed for returned checks. Everyone, regardless of age, must have a ticket; children under age one who
sit on parents’ laps will be issued a special ticket at no charge. All ticket sales are final; tickets may not be
refunded or exchanged.

Accessibility: The Department of Parks and Recreation encourages and supports the participation of

may take Metro Bus F1, F8, F2, or T18 or Prince George’s The Bus 18 to the theatre. (Connect to F2 Metro
Bus from Cheverly Metro Station, or ride T18 Metro Bus from the New Carrollton Metro Station.)
Parking is free; there are three lighted parking lots adjacent to the theatre.

Driving from Maryland: Take I-495 to the Baltimore/Washington Parkway South, exit at “Cheverly, Route
202” and turn right on Route 202. The theatre is 1/2 mile on the left.
Driving from Washington, DC or Virginia: Take New York Avenue or I-295 to the Baltimore/Washington
Parkway and exit on Route 202. Turn left on Route 202. The theatre is 1/2 mile on the left. Parking behind
and beside the theatre is free.
