Introduction

Are you making a difference? Take your time to think about that. Don’t
worry. The book won’t bite. Done? If you think that you’re making a
difference in this world, you are called an activist. If you’re at the age of
13-18, you are called a teen activist. Teen activism helps so many all
around the world. Children have inspired both adults and other kids to
help others around them and make this world a better place to live in.
One way teen activists make a difference is by helping other beings
besides humans. They help animals. They help abused, abandoned, and
even endangered animals. To help these beautiful beings, they go
through so many steps and hardships. Others can make it way worse by
making a bad difference like hunting animals illegally and also by
abusing their pets. Lots of different people have caused animals to be
endangered or even extinct, but these young activists still do their best
to help and prevent animals from becoming extinct. This book talks
about the other side of a pet’s life we don’t usually notice. If you’re
interested in helping out these amazing creatures, then this is the book
just for you!

Chapter 1 - How To Help An
Abandoned Pet

W hen a person has a problem, you would usually ask “How can I

help?”. Well in this case, most people don’t know how to help in this
situation. After all, it is kind of complicated. But as a person, you would
do anything to help him or her out with their problem. In this case,
you’re helping out homeless pets. So, how can you help abandoned
pets? There are a lot of different ways you can help.

For example, you can adopt a pet yourself. If you adopt a pet
yourself, you’ll definitely give the pet another chance at life. By
adopting a pet, you also prevent pets from overcrowding in animal
shelters and from scattering all around the streets because of
overpopulation.

2

Also, you can persuade others to adopt pets. Most activists do this
because they don’t have enough space at home, they can’t provide for the
pet, or they’re not ready to adopt a pet yet - but they can try to influence
others to adopt one. Instead of adopting a pet yourself, you can tell people
about a certain animal shelter that is overflowing with pets. For example, a
teen activist named Faye Carey have already found homes for 60 dogs. Faye
is a 16 year old teen from Waikato. Her journey in helping abandoned pets
started when she volunteered to work at an Animal Control Center. On her
last day of work, Faye noticed a puppy she saw on her first day was still
there. According to newshub.com, she said, “We picked up a puppy in the
pound the first day I went to Animal Control and then on my last day he
was still there and I felt really sorry for him.” To help the puppy, she
advertised him in a site called TradeMe. Luckily, a family in Auckland was
willing to adopt him.

S he didn’t stop there. “It can be stressful trying to juggle, because we've got

animals at home and schoolwork and chores and everything else. But I think it's easy
for me to do my work, because I'm quite dedicated to the puppies and dogs," she
says according to newshub.com As time passed, Faye noticed an alarming increase
of abandoned pets. The pound was filled with stray and abandoned pets. Faye took
action and advertised pets on a facebook page named Animal Re-Home. The page
has nearly 300 likes. By doing this, she helped out so many pets and found homes for
them. According to newshub.com, “This takes a lot of the heat off the pound for us
trying to get these dogs into homes," says Mr.Oliver, an officer from the Animal
Control Center.

Chapter 2 - Everyday Life
Of An Abandoned Pet

I magine yourself being sick and unhealthy. Unfortunately, your

sickness gets so bad you get confined in the hospital for 3 days. On
the 3rd day, you see the doctors gathering around you making a
fuss. Moments later, you hear one of the doctors say “He’s too sick
to leave the hospital, he’ll have to end his life.” Now that is a
situation that is almost impossible to happen for a human, but for a
pet in an animal shelter it’s mostly common. Stray and abandoned
pets are usually kept in animal shelters. Animal shelters are most
commonly known as the “pound”. A pound is a place where sick,
wounded, and stray pets are brought. Lost pets can also be found in
a pound . There are two types of animal shelters. They are called a
kill shelter and a no-kill shelter. Both have many things alike and
different. One thing’s for sure they’re not eager to euthanize their
pets.

4

Kill Shelters

Most shelters are kill shelters. These shelters are kill shelters. These shelters are
the most common shelters around the world. Most pets have a procedure of how
they are taken in a shelter. First, the pet is checked for any wounds and if it carries a
sickness. Next, the pet stays in a cage like the other pets and are taken care of,but
it’s temporary. Shelters have a 72-hour guideline for the pets staying at a shelter.
This doesn’t mean a pet only has 72 hours before it’s euthanized. The 72 hours is a
guideline letting the shelter know that after that limited time, the pet is in their
custody and can decide whatever they want to do with it.Most shelters try to extend
and put the pets up for adoption. Shelters can choose to euthanize a pet if it is
aggressive or has a very bad sickness. As for purebreds, they have a 10-day wait
because it’s most possible that they have an owner and is most likely to be adopted.
Workers don’t want to put an end to pets’ lives, but they have no choice if the
shelter is packed with pets. For pet owners, if their lost pet ends up in a pound they
contact shelters and report their pet to alert workers about it.

No-Kill Shelters

No- Kill shelters aren’t complete opposites of kill shelters. No-Kill
shelters don’t euthanize pets. They don’t even accept if the shelter is
full with pets. Though they don’t kill pets, they still reserve euthanasia
for ill animals or aggressive ones.

Chapter 3 -
Endangered Animals

H umans are greedy. Our greediness cause harm not only to

ourselves, but also to others. I know that for a fact. Because of us
being greedy and being selfish, we’ve affected many different
members of the animal kingdom. We’ve caused so many
populations to decrease because people wanted their flesh, skin, and
even horns. We’ve caused them to live a hard life by wanting more
amusement parks, more tourist attractions, and even new buildings.
Life is such a pain for those that just want to eat grass and just live in
the wilderness, minding their own business. They just want to
live.Different animals have been endangered because of us humans,
just like these ones below.

Amur Leopard

For example, the Amur leopard become endangered because of the
scarce of prey. food and cash causing them to have less prey for food.
One of the most important diets of an Amur leopard is the deer. Roe
deer, Sika deer are poached and hunted by villages for food and cash
causing them to have less prey for food.

Hawksbill Turtle

The Hawksbill Turtle is also one animal that has been endangered
because of fishermen. This beautiful creature in coral reefs around the
world. It’s cause of endangerment is people capturing them so they can
sell the turtles of the market. What makes the turtle so valuable? The
scales on its shell forms a jagged edge that can be used for jewelry
which causing them to be sold for a high price.

Black Rhinos

The Black Rhino is found in Africa and was considered a vermin. In the
early 20th century, European settlers arrived in Africa and started to
colonize areas. They also created plantations and farms. They killed the
rhinos to clear areas and started farms.Last year,1,338 rhinos killed by
poachers across Africa Their horns were used for Traditional Chinese
Medicine, but mostly as an amulet. The amulet is a symbol of strength
and power.

Chapter 4 - How To
Help An Abused Pet

When you see an owner with a pet, you’re usually reminded of a
warm, loving, and caring sensation. You imagine them cuddling and
looking out for each other. That’s not the case with some people.
Others would treat their pet as their own child. On the other hand,
others would beat, abuse, n eglect, and even torture their pet. Why? I
have no idea. These people treating these innocent creatures with so
much hatred and physical abuse don’t deserve the right to own them.
However, you can help. There’s a way to bring these criminals to justice
and expose them.

First, search for proof that the pet is being abused. You can notice if
a pet is being abused if they have wounds. You should also search for
bite marks and bruises. That would show the dog could’ve been through
a dog fight. About 40,000 people are involved in dog fights. You should
also see whether the pet is chained up most of the time or if it looks like
it’s not being fed well.Next, you should get as much proof as you can.
Taking a video and pictures of the pet being abused would definitely
help you when you report the abuse. Finally, report the abuse to an
agency. Make sure you research about which agency you would go to
and be ready to testify in court.

Incidents Of
Animal Abuse

For example, a Philippine teenager named Jerzon Senador was
accused of committing animal abuse after he hung his puppy by its
skin on a clothesline. Jerzon took photos with the puppy being hung
and posted it on Facebook. As a result, netizens lashed out on the
abuser and soon enough caught the attention of the Philippine
Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Although they started an
investigation and came to arrest him on April 2012, Jerzon was
nowhere to be found in his neighborhood. Furthermore, his parents
say they have no idea of the son’s whereabouts.

Jerzon’s Photo With Puppy

Another example is Joseph Carlo Candor. The student was accused of
animal cruelty after he killed a cat on campus and bragged about it in
his blog in 2007. Two years later, he was finally found and was arrested.
The case became the first successful arresting of someone accused of
animal cruelty.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, humans aren’t the only ones who deserve a
life. Animals should also have the right to live. We should
treat them with kindness and with care. This makes me
wonder “ What if animals were the first ones to roam Earth
and can walk on their hind legs?”
“What if they had the same thinking as humans and we had
theirs?” Imagine being hunted down by them instead of us
hunting them. That would be horrifying, right? The idea of
animals taking our skin of using it for bags, clothes, or even
trousers. This is the same case with animals. They should
have the right to live just like us. By speaking up and
inspiring others,YOU can also help out these innocent
creatures.
