TWHBEA NATIONAL FUTURITY

78th Annual TWHBEA National
Futurity

The 2016 Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors Association (TWHBEA) National Futurity
was held the evening of August 24, 2016, at Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee. It was a great
success with 101 talented, young horses strutting their stuff for the judges. The Celebration judges are
used every year for the Futurity Show and 2016 was no exception. Chris Bobo of Shelbyville, Tennessee,
Nathan Clark of Arab, Alabama, Ray Gilmer of Toone, Tennessee, Sam Sorrell of Lexington, Kentucky and
Leigh Stuart of Alvaton, Kentucky were all resplendent in their evening attire. Dallas Eubanks announced the
classes and calls for the evening while Brian Perry did a wonderful job keeping time with the horses on the
organ. Capturing the images on film was official photographer, Shane Shiflet.

Just after 6 o’clock p.m. the event started with the presentation of our nation’s colors by Line Item Veto
and Rachel Teague and the Tennessee flag by Vigor’s Dixie Chick and Allison Thorson. Leah Boyd sang the
National Anthem beautifully, as she always does. A new feature this year that received quite the praise was the
“fan favorite” scoring by text message from the crowd. In almost all of the classes, the winner of the crowd was
the winner of the judges and anticipation was high each class waiting on the results to see if they would match.

An evening to remember, this year’s National Futurity was both a premier showcase for theTennessee Walking
Horse industry’s young contenders and a celebration of our breed’s future. Thank you to all the exhibitors,
spectators and volunteers who made the 2016 TWHBEA National Futurity a success.

CHARLES GLEGHORN

A
FAMILY
AFFAIR

Charles Gleghorn

As a teenager growing up on a farm in Lincoln
County, Tennessee, Charles Gleghorn entered
the Walking Horse industry through the barter
system. He traded four pigs for a solid white walker, his first
registered Tennessee Walking Horse.

Barely out of his teens, Gleghorn went to work at a
Fayetteville bank as a trainee. He went on to become
president and chief executive office and found great success
in the banking business. In the walking horse industry he
has served as TWHBEA President and he has participated
on practically every committee within the Association. And
while Mr. Gleghorn has found success in both banking and
in the walking horse industry, he leaves little doubt about
his preference. Horses are his first love. Walking horses
provided a way to bring the family together and provide him
with a diversion from banking.

Mr. Gleghorn was married to Joy Jean of Fayetteville for
51 years, she passed away in November of 2013. They
had two children Carl and Gay, who are both married with
children of their own. Gay graduated from Auburn, majoring
in business and finance, she is married to Michael Dempsey
and followed in her fathers footsteps and is now Chief
Executive Officer of the Bank of Lincoln County. Carl is the
artist of the family and graduated from Auburn University
as an architect and is married to Rebecca Damron. Carl
is owner of Dagonfly Gallery and Design in Fayetteville,
Tennessee. Both have followed their father’s love of
Tennessee Walking Horses, winning blues throughout the
show circuit during their growing-up years.

Mr. Gleghorn is enjoying passing on some of the things
his father taught him, the value of one’s family, the value of
a dollar, and the importance of one’s community as well as
his love of walking horses to his seven grandchildren. Gay
has three children, Conner, Jordan and Makena and Carl
has four boys, Evan, Carter, Taylor, and Bailey. Five of his
seven grandchildren are currently showing in flat shod and
performance divisions.

ALL YOUTH DAY

Celebrating Our Industry’s Youth

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) proudly celebrated our industry’s youth during
the 2016 Celebration. As has become tradition, a youth horse judging contest, co-hosted by TWHBEA and The Celebration,
occurred on the first Saturday of the show August 29, 2016. This year 120 youth members from around the region
participated in the contest. Participants arrived with others from their 4-H or FFA group, or participated individually.

Also displayed at the 2016 Celebration was this year’s winners of the Association’s Creative Art Contest. Following the
judging contest TWHBEA honored the winners from both the judging contest and creative art contest in center ring to
resounding accolades of the crowd in attendance. Those who made the trip to center ring hailed from a variety of states
around the south-eastern United States. Again, Congratulations to all the winners.
