22015 CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK

Dear Supporters:

The year 2015 has been a big one for the Capital Area Food Bank.
We’ve reached 540,000 people in need with more than 44 million
pounds of food, up from 42 million pounds last year. And we reached
them with more carrots, apples, collard greens, and other fresh, beautiful
fruits and vegetables than ever before. As we did this critical work, we
have looked always to improve, asking:

How do we get moms, dads, children, and grandparents fresher food faster?
How do we best deliver knowledge about food’s critical link to health and wellness?
How do we better track food distribution so we are sure to target those most in need?

I’m glad to say that the CAFB team made headway on all those critical questions.

We launched a tool that tracks the salt, sugar and fiber in our incoming food donations so
that we can work with donors to improve our food’s nutrition quality. We added produce
and green vegetables to our food supply. Families especially appreciated the kale from
Clayton Farms; the melons from Coastal Growers; and the squash from Kirby Farms.

The recipe cards we’ve developed are helping folks assemble this beautiful produce –
adding canned beans, tuna, or chicken – to produce quick, inexpensive, and nutritious
meals. They’re a big hit, and we plan to expand distribution.

To make sure those vegetables and other groceries are distributed to areas of greatest
need, we developed a Hunger Heat Map – featured in the Washington Post – that has
been invaluable in helping to identify hunger hot spots, so we can get the food to those
who need it most.

We’ve distributed 1 million more meals to families in MD
We’ve distributed 560,000 more meals (nearly 700,000 additional pounds) to VA
We’re brought on 9 new partners in DC, expanding service to neighborhoods around them

And we are always asking: even as we help feed those in line for food in our community,
how do we also keep shortening the line? To that end, we built out the Food Bank Network,
an online tool that allows any man, woman, or child to type in their zip code and get a list of
available services for job training, free dental care, adult literacy classes, and more
(capitalareafoodbank.org/get-help).

This is an important moment for the food bank’s work. The food ecosystem is changing as
people demand more local food and better understand the link between food and wellness.

As a Next Generation organization that is very much part of that ecosystem, we are
changing with it. We’re committed not just to feeding people, but to feeding them well.
We’re committed to using technology to fuel smarter work. And we’re doing all of this in
the knowledge that food matters even more than we thought to so many things: to health,
to employment, and to a strong society.

Thank you so very much for all that you do to support our mission and work, and for being
a part of the movement to solve hunger.

Empowering our partners and the community that w

Partnering with the Community to End Hunger

In May 2015, we gathered over 450 of our
partners—from growers, to grocers, to those

who feed the community—at our annual
Hunger Summit. Andy Shallal, founder and

owner of the region’s Busboys and Poets
restaurants, gave a powerful keynote
address about food and social justice.

At the food bank, we believe that hunger
is a social justice issue - one that it will take

the whole community to solve. And as the
largest organization focused on solving
hunger in the DC metro area, we’re
empowering that community.
We’re doing it by creating
access to healthy food
like whole grains and
fresh produce. We’re
doing it with recipe
cards and produce
guides so that
people know
how to cook
delicious and
healthy meals.
And we’re doing it through advocacy

and awareness building, growing understanding
among our neighbors that hunger
is here, and it hurts. As Andy Shallal
said, “We need to have the will to
change the structures that allow
hunger to happen.” With the help
and partnership of the community,

6 we are working to do just that.

we serve with resources to connect and collaborate.

Searching for Services Made Easier

We’ve made it easier for members of our community to
find the resources they need. The Food Bank Network,
a social search engine, links the CAFB’s network of food
assistance partners and programs with anyone who needs
food. In addition to helping our neighbors in need find the
closest food pantry, the Food Bank Network also provides
information on many other services such as healthcare,
affordable housing, and job training.

At the Capital Area Food Bank, we are committed
to providing food that contributes to wellness.
Below is a visual journey showing the steps we
took to track nutrition levels in our inventory,
which formed the basis for organization-wide
WELLNESS FOOD goals.

ellness Connection

ss. We’re supporting that connection by sourcing and distributing

r Local Farms Make Local Impact with
Fruits and Vegetables

d

Through the Fruits and Vegetables Fund for Greater Washington, we source
local produce and distribute those fruits and vegetables to our partners feeding

hungry children, seniors, and families. Funded through a generous grant from
the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, the food bank established
relationships with local growers to procure fresh produce items for the
entire harvest season.

This growing season, we worked with five growers/suppliers, procuring apples,
cantaloupe, watermelon, potatoes, green beans, squash, and sweet potatoes.
In total, we distributed 230,000 pounds of nutritious food in coordination
with 16 of our food assistance partners. These local fruits and vegetables
were complemented by recipes and produce guides so that our partners
and their clients can best use the food.

Tracking Nutrition to Offer Healthier Choices

Offering our partners better food choices begins with understanding
the health of the food that’s coming through our distribution center

doors. In FY 2015, we began to use a tool called the Nutrition Tracker
to give us a snapshot of how our inventory stacked up against the
big nutrition offenders (salt, sugar) and helpers (fiber). We set
target levels for fiber and limits for salt and sugar for each item

we bring in, and began measuring against these targets. Foods that
meet the levels established are designated “wellness food”. We give
this information to our partners to inform their choices, and use it to

engage our food donors in discussion about the kids of food
donations we are seeking. In FY 2015, 78% of the food bank’s

inventory was “wellness food”!

“Our clients love the recipes provided by CAFB. They’re realizing they need to dial
back on the fried [food]. A lot of clients have said that they actually feel better.”

—Yvonne Scott, Food and Clothing Center of Ward 7

Finding Hidden Hung

From maps to smarter usage of our inte
of technology to feed our community.

us to make smarter decisions abou
and resource

Sometimes hunger is in plain sight. All too
often, though, its hidden – making it harder
to help those in need. To begin addressing
this challenge, the food bank set out to
create a digital map of hunger in our region.
We wanted to see – and to be able to share
with others – where we are reaching people
effectively, and where there are men, women,
and children without adequate food.

We began using our Hunger Heat Map in the
spring of 2015. By combining census data
and our own distribution information, we can
now more easily find those who need help,
but don’t have resources nearby –
grandparents on a fixed income with limited
mobility, children who would need to cross
a major freeway to get summer meals at a
local rec center. We’re using this information
to determine where we need community
partnerships, and how best to target new
programs. The result? People who need food
assistance are more visible, and we’re better
able to get meals to the children and families
in our area who need them.

The Washington Post called the Hunger Heat Map “T
that could revolutionize the war on hunger”. To expe

Feeding the Future

Susan MacKnight

Hunger Champion

When Susan MacKnight retired from her career
running a DC-based international economic research
and publications nonprofit, she began to look for
volunteer opportunities. For a while, she couldn’t
find anything that clicked – until one day, she
came to the food bank with her Oberlin
College alumni group.

She knew almost instantly that she had
found the right fit, returning the next week
and almost every week after for the next nine
years. Named Volunteer of the Year two times,
Susan has joined the community of future-minded
donors who have made a bequest to the food bank.
Her story of giving back is below.

“I hope others will join me.”

When I decided years ago to leave money in my will to charity, I thought about the
things that were most important to me as a way to narrow the options among so
many worthy local and national nonprofits. This list included a college education, a
house of my own, the companionship of my dogs and a love for reading. Food did
not make the cut, probably because it had always been available.

That changed after I began volunteering at the Capital Area Food Bank and
discovered the pervasiveness of hunger in the affluent Washington, D.C. metropolitan
region. The sheer number of children, minimum-wage workers, low-income seniors
and others without access to adequate food on a daily basis – an estimated 700,000
people currently – stunned me. I felt I had to do something to help slash this number.
Adding the Food Bank to my planned giving was the most effective means, since it
is the primary nonprofit distributor of food and nutrition education in our area.

This decision reflected more than just my rewarding experience packing donated
food for nine years. I was struck by the commitment of both the Food Bank's
management team and its staff to ending hunger in the Washington metro region.
The expanding range of initiatives launched over the years to address this issue also
impressed me. Equally important, the Food Bank's notably low fundraising expenses
and overhead costs meant that almost all the money I left to the organization would
be used in the fight against hunger.

So many of us take food for granted; it is always there, often in abundance. Not
everyone has that luxury. I hope others will join me in including the Food Bank in
their planned giving so that it has the resources to fulfill its critical mission as long as
the need exists.
