Linked in Friendship, Connected in Service
Arlington (VA) Chapter

Greetings from the President

EVELYN (EVIE) BROWN
Arlington (VA) Chapter

On behalf of the members of the Arlington (VA) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated,
I extend greetings to those who attended our ih Annual Connecting Links
Golf Tournament held at Joint Base Andrews on Monday, September 12, 2016. I
congratulate and salute the Arlington (VA) Chapter Connecting Links for their strong
engagement, partnership and continued support that helps our chapter continue
to deliver high-level, award winning programs in Arlington and Alexandria, VA
communities.
Commenced eight years ago, the Golf Tournament evolved thanks to Connecting
Link Maurice Spraggins who addressed the Chapter members during a desert event
held to thank and honor them for all they do. He talked about how they wanted to
spend more time together, getting acquainted, networking and bonding, but to also
host a golf tournament to help raise money to support the great work our chapter continues to do. Other
Connecting Links joined in and made a commitment to an elevated level of participation and to also seek
financial support. They have even extended their friendship and networking by reaching out to embrace
Connecting Links from new chapters.
Our Connecting Links are truly unique and we believe are unlike any others in the Links Organization. They
epitomize an enduring spirit of excellence, bound by a strong respect and friendship for one another. They
are the first to sign-up to work on committees to help organize and shape activities for Connecting Links at
National Assemblies and Area Conferences. They provide pro-bono and in-kind assistance to maximize our
fundraising capacity. To date, the Arlington (VA) Chapter Connecting Links have raised nearly $60,000 to
help fund a $100,000 endowment established to support scholarships for deserving students. Their efforts
allow our chapter to continue our commitment of $30,000 annually. We currently support 10 scholars for
four years with three additional college-bound students entering college this fall. Our scholars tell us that our
scholarship assistance affords them the ability to attend college that without which would not be possible.
We are also grateful for our sponsors for their caring hearts matched by their generosity. We appreciate those
who are providing sponsorship for the first time and from the bottom of our hearts, thanks to our repeat
sponsors and in-kind supporters.
Once again, we salute the Connecting Links of the Arlington (VA) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated for their
dedication and commitment to a legacy building initiative evident through this Annual Golf Tournament. We
also thank so many who continue to believe in us through their faithful participation and support of this
tournament event.

Thank You
Each time you support our fundraising events you invest in the future of our young scholars.
With your continued support we can help sustain and grow not only the futures of our young,
talented students, but also the future of our scholarship program.

We are working to enrich the program for our students by offering leadership development,
service opportunities, mentoring, and more. And we are proud to say that each year our
program strengthens and grows.

Your contributions have a profound effect on the lives of our students. Inspired by their hard
work and your generosity, we are committed to growing our program.

Thank you for your continued support.

Our Story/ Our Legacy
The chapter created a scholarship fund in recognition of Link Eleanor Monroe’s significant
contribution as Arlington County’s first African American school board member. The chapter
selected scholarship recipients based on their academic achievement as well as potential for
accomplishing their career and lifetime goals. We dedicate our time, our leadership and
commitment to ensure our scholarship recipients will succeed academically and grow to
develop vital influential programs to serve and shape communities in which they live and work.

Our Scholarships
Education is intoxicating and empowering. We provide the fuel for the many recipients that
have graduated our program and for those still part of our program. The program has expanded
since its inception and beginning in 2009 the chapter started awarding 4-year scholarships to
students. More than $350,000 has been awarded in scholarships. We help dreams come true
for our outstanding students.

Over the past five years’ recipients have successfully pursued the following careers:

Education
Engineering

Biology
Health
Mass Communications
Sociology
Environmental Science
Bio-Med Engineering
English
Business/Finance

Our Students

Our students are a pure pleasure to work with - they are gracious, smart, goal-oriented and
have a great thirst for knowledge. Our scholarship students are mentors, volunteers, leaders in
their communities, churches and schools – they believe in service to others. We recognize and
celebrate these young people who share our commitment of service. Our students are a
wonderful investment to a brighter future not only for themselves but for the world. Education
changes lives.

A Vital Component. Scholarships are a critical initiative for The Arlington (VA) Chapter

W H AT W E D O - A R L I N G T O N ( VA ) L I N K S S C H O L A R S H I P C O M M I T T E E .
The scholarship program is transformational. Our mission is to provide lifelong enrichment
opportunities for young minds that thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a difference in
the world. We raise scholarships funds through our elegant biannual Monte Carlo, which has a
long rich history as one of DMV’s premier events, and our annual Golf Tournament that our
wonderful Connecting Links started in 2010.

These funds support service area graduating high school students from freshmen year of
college through graduation. Our service area includes Alexandria, City of Alexandria and
Arlington County which includes eight different high schools: Yorktown, Washington-Lee,
Wakefield, West Potomac, Hayfield, TC Williams, Thomas Edison and Mount Vernon.
We currently have ten scholarship recipients on our rolls including three new freshmen
recipients.

Our New Freshmen Scholarship Recipients Are:
Ms. Kiya M. Wimbush-Robinson –Virginia State University

Mr. Jordan A. Randle – Morehouse College
Ms. Letu Kassa – James Madison University
