Course Etiquette
In an effort to ensure that everyone’s game of golf is enjoyable
would you please observe these few rules of etiquette.
Players should play “ready golf” regardless of honour or distance from the hole,
except for Matchplay competitions where honour and distance is retained.
No one should move, talk or stand close to, behind the ball or the hole when a
player is addressing the ball or making a stroke.
In the interest of all, players should play without delay.
No player should play until the players in front are out of range.
Players searching for a ball should signal the players behind them to pass as soon
as it becomes apparent that the ball will not be easily found. They should not
search for three minutes before doing so. They should not continue play until the
players following them have passed and are out of range.
Place your bag and trolley on the same side of the green for the next tee.
When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave
the putting green. Mark scorecards off the green.
In general, two balls have precedence over any three or four balls and three balls
have precedence over four balls. However, if a group of any size fails to keep up
with the group in front or unduly delays those following behind, they should give
way regardless of format. A single player has standing but need not be let through.
A single player may play two balls providing there is no-one behind them.
Play should commence from either the 1st, 4th or 11th holes. If not starting on the
1st, a clear gap should be visible on the preceding hole prior to teeing off. On quiet
days, players may change sequence so long as doing so does not interfere with
other players on the course. When only nine holes are open players completing
their first 9 have no priority on the 1st tee over those who have not yet started.
Players are requested to:
● Repair pitch marks
● Replace divots and/or use divot bags
● Rake bunkers after playing from them, leave rakes in bunkers
Any ball that lands on an incorrect green must be lifted, without penalty, and
dropped not nearer the hole at the nearest point of relief.
New Rules of Golf for 2019
The new Rules of Golf take effect on 1st January 2019. The key changes
include:
New Definitions
• Penalty Area - an area from which relief with a 1 shot penalty is
allowed (formerly 'Water Hazard'). Still defined as either yellow or red.
• Relief Area - the area in which the ball must be dropped (and come to
rest) when taking relief under a rule.
• General Area - anywhere on the course except Teeing areas, Penalty
areas, Bunkers and Greens (formerly 'Through the Green')
• Temporary Water - formerly 'Casual Water'
Pace-of-play support
• Encouragement of Ready Golf in Stroke Play.
• Players may agree to play out of turn in Match Play.
Elimination of 'Ball Moved' penalties
• No penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the putting green or in
searching for a ball.
Relaxed Putting Green rules
• No penalty if a ball hits an unattended flagstick in the hole.
• Players may repair damage to the green, whether their ball is on the
green or not. This includes old hole plugs, spike marks and damage
made by shoes, animals and maintenance practices (but not aeration
holes, unless there is a local rule in place).
• No penalty for touching the line of putt.
• A ball resting against the flagstick is deemed holed as long as part of
the ball is below the surface of the ground.
• Interference by a Wrong Green now includes the player's stance.
Relaxed Bunker rules
• No penalty for moving loose impediments (stones, leaves, etc.) in a
bunker or for generally touching the sand with hand or club (but not
directly in front or behind the ball or in making a backswing or practice
swing).
• An extra relief option for an unplayable ball, allowing the ball to be
played from outside the bunker with a two-stroke penalty.
Relaxed rules for Penalty Areas
• Expanded use of red penalty areas where lateral relief is allowed.
• No penalty for moving loose impediments, touching the ground or
water or taking a practice swing in a Penalty Area.
Simplified way of Taking Relief
• New procedure for taking relief by dropping in a specific Relief Area.
• Ball dropped from knee height and must stay within the Relief Area.
Lost Ball & Provisional Ball
• A ball is Lost if not found within 3 minutes of commencing search,
although a reasonable amount of additional time is allowed to get to
and identify a ball that has been spotted within the 3 minutes.
• A Provisional Ball may be played after the player has moved forward,
at any time up to the end of the 3-minute search period.
Alternative to Stroke & Distance
• A new Local Rule to allow golfers to drop the ball in the vicinity of
where the ball is lost or out of bounds under a two-stroke penalty.
• This Local Rule is not available in Qualifiers and is not intended for
higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competitions.
• The rule will be trialled during the winter before deciding whether to
adopt the rule permanently in non-qualifiers.
Some other changes
• The honour on the tee is determined by the player with the lowest
gross score on the previous hole.
• No need to announce the intention to lift a ball to identify it or
determine if it is in an abnormal condition (ball must be marked first).
• A ball may be marked by holding a club behind or to the side of it.
• Natural objects may be moved to see if they are loose or unattached. If
they are found to be attached, they must be replaced as close as
possible to their original position.
• No penalty for a multiple hit or if the ball accidentally hits the player.
• Relief for an embedded ball is available anywhere in the General Area
and the Relief Area is 1 club length from a point directly behind the
ball.
• No "opposite side relief" from red penalty areas.
• A player may keep using and/or repair any club damaged during the
round, no matter what the damage and even if the player damaged it
in anger.
• A player is not allowed to replace a damaged club, except when it is
damaged by an outside influence or by someone other than the player
or caddie.
• A new form of Stroke Play called 'Maximum Score' where the
maximum score for a hole is set at a specific number (e.g. 8), or twice
the par of the hole, or nett double bogey. For example, if the
maximum score for a hole is set at 8 and you lose your ball and decide
not to complete the hole, your score is entered as 8. Similarly, once
you have played 7 (or less) shots you can pick up your ball and record 8
on the scorecard. For CONGU Qualifying Competitions the maximum
score must be set at a minimum of 5 over par (equivalent to net
double bogey for a player receiving 3 shots on the hole).

Disqualification.
Suspension of Play for other reasons

Competition Rules
1 General
1.1 The Rules of the R&A shall apply.
2 Stroke Competitions
2.1 The entry fee and conditions of entry shall be decided by the
Committee. Entry sheets will normally be displayed on the Notice Board
or online at least 14 days before the date of the competition. Entrants
may only enter their own names and that of their playing partners,
maximum 4 players.
2.2 Competitors must pay the entry fee and obtain a competition card
before commencing play.
2.3 Unless the Committee decides otherwise members may choose their
own playing partners.
2.4 Competitors entered in competitions who are unable to play must
contact the Professional’s shop (Tel. No. 01746 763315 Ext. 2) 24 hours
before their start time. Failure to do so without a reason acceptable to
the Committee may result in disciplinary action.
3 Tees
3.1 Men’s Competitions are to be played from white tees and Ladies
from red tees unless specified otherwise.
4 Timing and Order of Playing Holes
4.1 Competitors must complete the round without a break or undue
delay except as allowed in the Rules of Golf. Any competitor not on the
tee at the appointed time will be penalised two shots, (or two points in
Stableford competitions or two holes in par competitions). If the delay is
more than five minutes the player will be disqualified. Members are
asked to be on the tee five minutes before their tee off time.
5 Cards
5.1 No Competitor shall mark his own card. Unless the Committee
appoint a marker, a competitor (a competitor is a member playing in the
same competition) shall mark and sign a competitor’s card.
5.2 In qualifying Stroke Play competitions, all cards including “No
Returns” must be returned to the Pro Shop or organiser.
5.3 In Stroke Play Competitions gross scores must be recorded in the
appropriate column in every case.
6 Handicaps
6.1 Members are to play off current Golf Club handicap or handicap from
their home club. Members must produce their 10-digit CDH number and
handicap certificate from their Home Club if they are an away member.
7 Handicap Allowance in Stroke Play Competitions
Rules for stroke play competitions will be clearly stated alongside the
start sheet and in the Pro Shop prior to competition entry.
8 Match Play Competitions
8.1 Entry procedures will be posted on the notice boards for individual
competitions.
8.2 Entry fees must be paid in advance of the draw. Instructions will be
on the entry sheet.
8.3 Each round shall consist of 18 holes match play or as the case may be.
If a match is all square at the last hole, i.e. the 18th or 36th hole, play shall
continue from the first tee until one player or a side wins a hole.
8.4 Men’s competitions are to be played from white tees and Ladies from
red tees unless specified otherwise.
8.5 Mixed match-play comps take the stroke index from men’s card.
9 Time Limits and Arrangements of Matches
9.1 The date by which each round must be played will be shown on the
draw sheet. Each competitor has equal responsibility for arranging the
date and time of their matches. All matches should be played as soon as
possible. If a match is not played by the due date BOTH COMPETITORS
will be disqualified. If players cannot agree a date then the Competitions
Committee must be approached for a decision or extension.
10 Claiming Matches
10.1 A competitor in a singles competition (or a side in the case of
Foursomes or Greensomes) may claim the match should one of their
opponents fail to attend at the first tee within half an hour of the time
arranged, unless the reason given is acceptable to the Committee. In
fourball competitions, since one player can represent a side, the match
can only be claimed if both members of the opposing side are absent.
10.2 The Committee will adjudicate on disputes not settled by the
referee and their decision will be final.
11 Recording of Matches
11.1 The winner(s) of each match must record the fact by entering the
name(s) into the next round immediately the match is completed.
11.2 Any queries concerning competition rules should be addressed to
the Competition and Handicap chairperson.
12 Handicap Allowances in Match Play Competitions
12.1 Handicaps will be based on the player’s current handicap on the day
of the match.
12.2 Singles – full difference between the handicaps.
12.3 Foursomes – half of the difference between aggregate handicaps of
each side.
12.4 Betterball – the player with the lowest handicap gives strokes to the
other three players equal to 90% of the difference between aggregate
handicaps of each side.
12.5 Greensomes – full difference between the handicaps of the two
sides as per CONGU Rule 72.
Health & Safety
In the event of an emergency call 999 and inform 01746 762045 (Pro
Shop) or 01746 763315 (Clubhouse). Emergency postcode WV16 4SF.
All accidents and incidents, including near misses, must be reported to the Clubhouse where
there is an accident book behind the Bar. Players must shout Fore! if their ball is wayward and
might cross an adjacent fairway, road, foot path or might strike another person.
First aid boxes are located outside the Secretary’s Office, in the Kitchen, Green Keeper’s Office
and on Vehicles. A defibrillator is located outside the Secretary’s office. Ambulance access to
the course is from the Club House car park near the 18th Green, vehicle pathways next to the
16th Tee and the 9th Green.
Green Keepers have priority on the course at all times; please make them aware prior to
playing your shot. Notice of the application of chemicals, or other isolated work posing a risk,
will be displayed near the 1st tee. Take care near Green Keeper’s shed when walking to 4th and
16th tee due to course workers and equipment. Please take care when crossing Stanley Lane
between the 3rd Green and 4th Tee and the 17th Green and 18th Tee.
There is a public footpath running alongside the river on the 6th, 7th and 13th fairways and it is
paramount that the public are given priority at all times. If there are people in range of your
shot, please do not play until they are a safe distance away. Take care when playing the 15th,
16th, 17th and 18th holes which run alongside Stanley Lane. Please wait for any vehicles,
bicycles or pedestrians to clear the lane. Take care when entering the lane in search of lost
golf balls. Do not climb down the river bank or enter the river.
The tee shot on the 1st hole is blind (over a hill) – do not tee-off until the bell has been rung or
you are aware that the group in front is sufficiently out of range. The second shot to the 18th
green is also blind – please wait until the bell has been rung or you are aware that the green
has been cleared.
Players using buggies must avail themselves of full operating instructions and agree to our
buggy policy as provided by the Pro Shop.
Golf is a hazardous sport which you undertake at your own risk. These guidelines are not
exhaustive. You are responsible for your own and other’s safety. Take care over uneven
surfaces, steps and steep inclines. Use paths and hand rails. Stop play when foghorn is
sounded at times of fog or lightning. Do not commence play if you cannot see the yellow disc
on 1st or 4th holes.
