FINNISH REDEMPTION TOUR: Steelwing + Freedomination + guests
presented by ENSLAIN MAGAZINE & HEL ROCKS

In September 2015, following myriad life overhauls, I found myself in the iSdteeaellwpoinsgit.ioWn thoenreItuleranrntoedmtyhabteIl’odvbede

sharing the road - and a cramped white van - with these Swedes for a few weeks across Europe, I hastily sought out
any indications as to who these mysterious persons were that I’d be living and struggling with. My initial YouTubings
presented me with a youthful and energized – yet musically somewhat antiquated – 80’s assault of chains and

Delving deeper into their material, however, I started recognizing myself becoming thoroughly engrossed by their
gripping hooks, their sharp and thrilling riffs, and their blazing, contagious metal spirit. And holy hell the lungs
on that vocalist! Such strength, character and pleasing timbre, aided by (sometimes vexingly) unforgettable vocal
melodies. Even though I’ve rarely taken to bands belonging to the retro movement or with that style of singing,
they had just captured something so much more fresh, melodic and innovative, that I quickly became enamored and
started craving the tour to begin. And so, after weeks of setting up my merch stand as close to the stage room as
possible so that I wouldn’t miss a moment of the lyrically captivating “Sentinel Hill” or the fast and furious “Roadkill
(...or be Killed),” I realized that I still hadn’t had enough. It also occurred to me that I might be in the position to
introduce other Finns to this remarkable discovery I had made, by inviting them to play in my hometown of Helsinki.
After a hell of a lot of calculation and preparation, and an overambitious yearning to extend their visit into a tour,
these post-apocalyptic prophets are finally coming back to reset, reboot and redeem our (waste)land.

Now, despite my new-found devotion for these guys, I still felt the devious need to give them a hard time, perhaps
to challenge them on behalf of others like my earlier self who might consider their origins or development dubious
or disingenuous -- and to give them a chance to justify their existence in an oversaturated scene. In this interview,
vocalist Riley really took it like a champ, and took away any remaining skepticism I might have had as well.

NO OVERRIDE; NO COMPROMISE...

Steelwing has become associated with the retro heavy metal influence we felt like. So for me personally

conservative values, religion and patriotism. I think it could
go either way, depending on how we play our cards, but in
a metal context it’s quite natural to focus on the negative. I
would like to do more to change the world as I have strong
opinions about politics, and I’m trying to practice what I preach
by being a vegetarian and considering how my lifestyle affects
the environment.

I’ve been billing you guys as “post-apocalyptic heavy metal.” But
don’t most metal bands sing about these dystopian themes?

and partying lyrics. There’s a deep fascination and fear of the
nuclear holocaust running through all three of our albums.
Lord of the Wasteland was obviously very Mad Max inspired.

going on there.

Let’s move on to Finland. Robby and Nic are pretty much half-

TRIVIAL FACTOIDS ABOUT THE STEELWINGERS:

• ALEX VEGA (guitars) frequently falls asleep behind the wheel when driving drunk.
• Name any movie and ROBBY ROCKBAG (guitars) will tell you when it was released.
• NIC SAVAGE (bass) was arrested in Tokyo for having tattoos.
• OSKAR ÅSTEDT (drums) once emptied the urine tank of a nightliner on a parking lot.
• RILEY (vocals) once signed off a tour blog as “Riley Erickson and the Aliens” as a Rocky Erickson tribute...

Someone didn’t get it and wrote Riley Erickson in the line-up on their German Wikipedia. Since then,
countless rock “journalists” have involuntarily revealed their use of Wikipedia instead of official sources.
