THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
I pose this question to you today. How many of you will be taking a
holiday this year? Peoples’ response will vary from “No I have
cancelled it” to “Staying at home, due to the way things are”. Holiday
comes from the word Holy Day meaning a break from normal day to
day, to concentrate on a day of religious significance, for example,
Good Friday, Christmas Day.
Over the years it has become an opportunity to relax and recharge
before returning to the normal routine. Everyone should be taking some
time out, it’s not about going away, it could be going on a different walk

each day somewhere, doing something different from the norm.
Perhaps spending a bit of time with family or a friend. Although we are
made in the image of God, we are human-beings and we need rest.

In the Gospels, we read Jesus takes time to rest, tries to get away, time
to pray, time to gather thoughts, so if that’s what Jesus did, why don’t
we?

The last few months have been testing times for everyone, the like we
have never seen before and the near future is going to be a challenging
time, so taking time for ourselves is essential, reading a book that we
have been meaning to for some time, spend time looking after
ourselves, not only physically but for our own mental wellbeing also.
Taking time with our own spiritual wellbeing, time spent with God is an
investment. Recharging ourselves spiritually is a must if we are going
to face up to the challenges of the future, because in Christ we find
refreshment, nourishment and peace, a perfect rest. The words which
we find in St Matthew’s Gospel which we also use in our Book of
Common Prayer “Come to me all you who are weary and I will give
you rest”, reminds us that all the burdens and worries we gather and the
pressure that modern life puts on us, an opportunity to can find our true
refreshment in the words that Jesus offers.

Jesus’ ministry took place in a country that was hot and where the most
common way to travel was on foot, Jesus knew what it was like for the
need to seek rest.

So, my message today is look after yourselves, take time out, not only
will you feel better for it, but will face the future refreshed.

God bless you all.

THE BLESSING OF SERMON PREPARATION
For the next of our series of Bible Studies I would like to introduce you
to the spiritual insight that comes from preparing a Bible passage for a
sermon. Using a randomly chosen Bible passage I want each set of
people to work out (under my guidance) how it could be preached. We
will look together at context, main message and how illustration work
together to make a sermon. Finally, at the end, I will preach “our” 7-
minute sermon back to the group!
This would be suitable for all levels of Bible knowledge and no one
would be placed under any pressure to contribute. I have long wanted to
encourage All Saints to find the encouragement that comes from reading
a Bible passage with a deeper understanding and I am excited about the
possibilities. Working with different passages (Old Testament on
Wednesday at 7.15pm and New Testament on Thursday at 8.00pm) you
are invited to choose your preference and, if space permits, also attend
your second choice.
Please let Robin know by either email ( [email protected] ) or
phone ( 623388 ) if you would like to attend on WEDNESDAY
AUGUST 12th at 7.15pm or THURSDAY AUGUST 13th at 8.00pm.
Both sessions will last about an hour.

SILVER SCREEN LITE
One of the sadness’s of Lockdown has been the suspension of our work
amongst the so called “silver” generation. From Silver Screen, through

Silver Café to Silver Games we were able to spend time together, to
socialise and, above all, have a jolly time! As things begin to “open up”
we would like to make a small step back to normality with “Silver
Screen Lite”.

The proposal is to watch an episode of Fawlty Towers together (with

Social Distancing) and possibly follow this with very simple

refreshments. Because our toilets can only be used in the event of

necessity, we are proposing the whole thing to last no longer than an

hour with the practicality of leaving at the half way point if needed.
Episode one is entitled “A Touch of Class” and is described thus “As

Basil tries to raise the tone of the hotel, the aristocratic Lord Melbury

comes to stay at the hotel. Basil fawns over him at every opportunity,

causing himself to neglect or annoy other guests, until Polly discovers

Melbury is actually a confidence trickster. Meanwhile, Sybil orders
Basil to hang a picture…….”

We are planning to meet every fortnight and begin at 2.30pm on
Thursday September 3rd. Please let Robin know by either phone

623388 or email [email protected] if you would like to

attend as numbers are limited by the need to sit at least 2 metres apart.

“BENEFICE” SERVICE

As we move towards formally extending Kesgrave Benefice to include

Playford and Little Bealings we thought it would be a good idea to hold
monthly “Benefice” Service on the first Sunday of the month. On

September 6th at 6.30pm there will be a special service (format to be
decided) at Playford to “kick us off”. If you would like to come please

approach Colin Hedgley (details below) as we will need to make sure
we can get everyone in within “Social Distancing” guidelines.

JULY – A MONTH OF MOVING FORWARD
With July almost over, we are glad to report it’s been another busy
month at All Saints, and ‘in-church’ services are going well. How
wonderful it is to have our church open again. Zoom has been quite an
amazing experience, and will definitely be moving forward with us into
the ‘new normal’, but how very special it feels getting back into our
church building with its familiar and reassuring sense of peace, its
stillness, and strong sense of God’s presence.
July began with the Faraday Institute Science and Religion week. Ten of
us watched and considered webinars on a diverse subject range
including, ‘Dementia’ and ‘Neuroscience and Human Identity’. We then
met up for a lively conversation on the Friday evening. Some talks were
enjoyed more than others, and interestingly different people preferred
different talks. But an interesting week.
On Sunday 5th July Rev Charlotte Cook joined us to preach on Peace,
the next in our Fruit of the Spirit series of sermons. As ever, Charlotte
delighted us with her wisdom, enthusiasm for God, and smiles.
Delightful. We have enjoyed drawing Peace Doves.

The church opened for its first post-lockdown services, with 8.30am and
midday services bringing plenty of smiles from 27 congregation
members, mostly those who haven’t managed to join us on Zoom. I
know everyone enjoyed seeing each other again, being in church, and
being part of a service again. Ollie preached at After Hours at 5pm, and
I hear he was ‘brilliant’. Sixteen people attended and listened to his
sermon on ‘How God is with us in our time of difficulty’.

Messy Church, Coffee and Chat, and Youth House Group continued
throughout the month, keeping Jennie Fidler and Ollie busy, and our
younger church family supported and encouraged in their faith while
enjoying friendship. They have been colouring, painting, making
origami and baking..

Natalie has also been kept very busy, advertising all over the place, co-
ordinating, while pulling together the Newsletter. These efforts have
been rewarded with good numbers attending services, Bible Study,
children’s groups, and courses.
We were pleased to reinstate Holy Communion on Thursday 9th July,
and this was gladly received by those attending. Going forward,
Communion will be offered at the 8.30am Sunday service and 11am on
Thursdays.
Sunday 12th July saw Mike Bryer preaching on Self-control, and Robin
and Mike (with the tech team) back in the church hall for the first time.
Playford also resumed services and Gary was delighted with a turnout
of 24 people. Mike taught about temptation, about compromising our
beliefs, and how Jesus was challenged in the desert but overcame
temptation with self-control.
Robin’s mid-month Bible Study ‘The Journey of Faith – Growing in
Discipleship’ took place on three evenings with 24 attendees. We were
asked ‘Imagine your life is a car – where in the car, or in relation to the
car, would Jesus be?’ An interesting discussion ensued: the steering
wheel, the headlights, in the passenger seat? Or is He our SatNav? What
do you think? We went on to discuss denying ourselves material things

and taking up our faith, committing to faith and discipleship - for
ultimately, it doesn’t matter if we have the best car, a big house, or new
shoes, what matters when we are judged is whether we have led a good
and faithful life.
On Sunday 19th July Sally Wainman covered the fruit of Kindness,
gently explaining the story of Ruth, and teaching how kindness to others
can mean so much and change lives for the better. Our activity involved
drawing around both of our hands, decorating them as we wish, and
then thinking about some acts of kindness that we could complete for
others.

This month will finish on Sunday 26th July with the fruit of Goodness,
and a Zoom trip to Keswick for those who would like to explore and
celebrate Hope at the Keswick Convention via
www.keswick.ministries.org (or vkc.keswick.ministries.org). The daily
programme takes place Monday to Friday and consists of a 10pm Bible
Reading, 11.15am Seminar, 8pm Evening Celebration. There will be a
sung worship on the afternoon of Tuesday 28th, plus youth/children’s
activities (please see the website).
Happy August All, we look forward to seeing you on Zoom and in real
life!

THE DOMESTIC EVANGELIST
Helen and I are undertaking a "Lightwave Small Group Leadership"
course at present, so we can help to run some of these groups in future.
As I write we have a session tonight where the theme is "Evangelism".
So this morning I started to think and pray about what this meant to me,
and to my surprise a very clear image appeared which I wanted to share
with you.

About a year ago, Ann Fenton organised a First Aid course for our
church which was very well attended. I had wanted to do something like
this for a long time and so I jumped at the opportunity. Amongst other
things this showed us how to perform CPR correctly, which is
performing chest compressions and breaths until someone can arrive
with a defibrillator to re-start the heart on the patient and to re-start
breathing. Delivering CPR in time can mean the difference between life
or death, whereas if it is left too late, in fact if it is not delivered within
just a few minutes, there is nothing more you can do. That's it,
opportunity gone. More often than not, this help arrives too late by
ambulance or by first response teams. The trainer told us in all his
career he has saved no-one from CPR because no matter how fast he
drives his motorbike, he always arrives too late. Yet the people he had
trained through first aid courses had in turn saved many lives as they
were there on the spot just when they were needed. This is why it is so
important for as many people as possible to know how to do CPR. It is
the difference to someone between living a full life normally, or death,
in just a moment.

I would not hesitate to deliver CPR to save someone's life and I am sure
that all of us, if we knew how to, would do the same instinctively.

Yet this instinctive response is to save the physical life, which on an
eternal scale has been and gone in the blink of an eye. How much more
important is it to save the eternal soul?

We know that as Christians we are saved, and whilst all salvation is
God's choice as to who is saved and who is not, and is not ours to judge,
we can't assume that those who do not know God are saved. The
following comparison may seem dramatic, however I think it is totally
reasonable, and this is the image I was given:

If someone does not know God, they may be in danger, on an eternal
scale, of imminent death. When God presents us with an opportunity to
share something about God's word or how God helps us in our lives,
then we must take it there and then, or we are doing the equivalent of
refusing to do CPR on someone in need.

Each of us are called to evangelism in our own way. To a very few, this
is a full time calling, and we tend to think of full time evangelists as
Bible bashing on a soap box (yet very few are this
stereotype!) However, each of us are called to be a "Domestic
Evangelist", in our own quiet and gentle way sharing the good news of
the Gospels with those we know and meet as God presents us with the
opportunities.

If you do not think you have these opportunities, then please pray and
ask God to give them to you. Ask God to give you a heart for
evangelism, so that it becomes as normal to you as drinking a cup of
water or tea. You may be surprised at just how many opportunities God
presents you with and you may underestimate the real difference that
you can make! Grasp these opportunities, treasure them, and enjoy
sharing the love of God with those you know and meet.

WHO EVER THOUGHT ALPHA COULD BE SO ENJOYABLE!
Our 12-week Alpha Course is coming to an end and we don’t want it to
stop.

I imagine all Alpha courses are different depending on who comes
along; I certainly believed Alpha was for beginners, those just
considering God, those wondering if faith could help with their
struggles in life. But our Alpha course was quite different. Yes we had a
few people quite early in their faith journey, but as for the rest of us my
goodness, it was a mix of ministers and long term congregation
members! So I would say to you, ANYONE can go on an Alpha
Course, and anyone can enjoy and learn from it.

There were 18 on our course and after an introduction each week we
broke down into 2-3 groups for a 40 minute chat – most weeks we could
easily have gone on for two hours! Twelve of the group were from All
Saints, the rest were Lightwave leaders and people from other local
parishes. Sally Letman said this week, ‘I’ve loved our get-togethers
each week, they’re like getting into a warm bath’ – we certainly all
leave smiling.

Some people wanted to know ‘how to pray’, others felt reading the
Bible was difficult and wanted ideas on how to get more out of it - ideas
were very forthcoming!

We so enjoyed listening to each other’s experiences of God and life (but
if you didn’t want to talk, that was perfectly acceptable too). We
encouraged each other in faith, and tried to answer each other’s
questions. We found confidence in each other, friendship, and courage
as we learnt to put the feelings in our heart into words. It was great
seeing this group open up and blossom.

Even for long term Christians, opening up about faith can be difficult.
We are often used to sitting in the congregation listening, or saying our
prayers silently in bed at night, but talking about our faith together can
be a wonderful experience. Alpha is for beginners, and we are all
beginners in many ways; some know more Bible, some have

experienced God acting in their lives, some feel they haven’t, some
believe with all their heart but lack the courage to talk of God and faith;
we are a wonderful mix and have so much to share.

As we draw to an end of our course the feeling in the group is that we
don’t want our weekly Zoom meet-ups to end, so they won’t. We will
have a fortnight off and then resume in September as a Lightwave
group. We will start with a Bible passage each week, and see where
God leads us. We would like to thank Rev Charlotte Cook for leading
our course and know that as she moves on to new people and leading
new groups she will be thrilled that this group will be continuing.

Now, for anyone who missed out…. I will be running a new Zoom
Alpha course starting in September. If you would like to come along, or
if you have any questions, please email me. Please don’t be nervous,
and please don’t think ‘I don’t know enough Bible’ (I keep hearing this
phrase). This course is for beginners, for the somewhat more
experienced, and everyone in-between. Do come along, I’d love to see
you.

PRAYERS
As we emerge from our restrictions, there is much progress to thank
God for. Prayer is still hugely important, as it is through prayer that the
difficulties brought about by the pandemic will be resolved, whilst there
are so many other things to pray for.

Each Wednesday a group of people in the church pray for people we
know who are in need, for our church and what's going on in the World.
Whilst the church has been closed this has continued as shared prayers
by email, making people anonymous where requested. These prayers
have become very popular, as a way for many more people to join in
doing something to make a difference. Prayer requests (for anything)

are sent to [email protected] or phoned in on 07857
838678 by Tuesday evening, and John puts them together in a respectful
structure to bcc to everyone who can receive the email prayers so we
can all join in the same prayers. Praying together for the same things has
a special importance and significance.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus" Phillipians 4:6-7.

Please contact John if you would like to add something for prayer
and/or to receive these weekly prayers. Just send in whatever is on your
heart, don't worry about using perfect English.

With thanks, John

THE ASK JOURNAL
I was having a tidy up of the bookshelves in our lounge the other day.
As I was flicking through the pages of a favourite novel, a sheet of
paper came fluttering out and I recognised the familiar, spidery
handwriting of my Nanna. It was a letter that she had written to me a
few years ago, and in it she had copied out a poem that she said had
helped her over the years. She would have been 92 this year, and
apparently the poem was from a book her Sister had given her in 1945
when she was just 17. I’ve tried to search for the poem online, but
there’s no evidence of it there that I can find. So, I thought how lovely it
would be to see it in print again, for others to enjoy and be comforted
by, just as my Nanna discovered all those years ago.

Leave in the hands of thy Father,
All that is yet unknown,
Know that He will not forsake thee,
Thou shalt not walk alone.

Over the paths that are rugged,
He will thy footsteps guide,
Only be patient and trust Him,
Only in Him abide.

That which his hand has withholden,
Seek not to do or be,
So shall he choose in his wisdom,
All that is best for thee.
