THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Here We Go Again….

One of the jokes amongst Clergy is that, desperate for a fresh Magazine
thought, we start “while looking out of my Study window this morning I
thought…” While I will talk for the country at a drop of a hat I find
writing a lot harder.
The title “Here We Go Again” could easily refer to having to write this
(actually it does) but this time it also refers to the Prime Minister
addressing the nation tonight (September 22nd) about the latest set of
Corona virus restrictions. I deliberately want to write in the time
between knowing it is coming and not fully knowing what it will

include. Of course, by the time you read it you will know and, probably
a lot more too. What is the infection rate on the day you read this? How
many hospitalisations, ventilator occupants and daily deaths are there on
your day of reading? Whatever the answers and whatever the
consequences on health, wellbeing or the economy Jesus encourages us
to stick with him for the long run.

When Jesus says “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your
life……” he is offering good advice but not easy advice. In fact,
because these things are very important, we should expect good advice
to NOT be easy advice to put into practise. The base word behind the
word worry means to be divided. Jesus put it in Matthew 12 like this:-

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided
against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against
itself will not stand.

Worry is debilitating because it takes the energy we need to employ
actually DOING the things that keep ourselves and others safe. It also
reflects what we believe deep down and that is the place where trusting
Jesus should reign supreme. Glib though it sounds let us recognise that
“while we do not know what the future holds we do know the one who
holds the future” the one who says in John 14

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in
me”.

SEPTEMBER - HARVEST, JOSEPH, further IT success,
and so much more!
It’s unusual to start our monthly round up with IT but our technology
experts are making such a difference to our ability to move forward
during these unusual times that that they deserve a special mention.
Thanks to the brains of Peter Elmer, John Wittgreffe, Ollie Scase, Mike
Bryer and Ian Pennock, Sunday 6th September saw our Zoom service
live streamed for the first time from the church. Robin was happily back
at the altar making us smile, and how lovely it was to see our
comfortingly familiar dossel, Cross and candlesticks with the chapel in
the background. Our Tech Team is superb and we thank them for their
brilliant efforts that now enable All Saints to live stream services,
provide internet in the church building, and generally link us all together
and to the world, in a wonderful variety of IT ways. Your skills are
such a blessing to us and we are so grateful for them.
We began September with Joseph in prison for a crime he didn’t
commit, and Robin spoke of dreams and our imagination. With an
imagination we can ‘travel’ anywhere, we can invent, create and dream.
With an imagination we can never be imprisoned for our minds are
always free. We thanked God for the gift of imagination and the
children used their imaginations to draw their perfect island.

Our 5pm After Hours service was led by Rev Toby Tate with Rev Sally
Letman preaching a beautiful service based on Psalm 27:14 – ‘Wait for
the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord’. All of us are
having to wait at the moment, with life seemingly ‘on hold’ at times.
Sally spoke of how patient endurance is needed as we wait for the Lord

to work during difficult circumstances; how faith is often tested; and
how we need to confidently wait for the Lord's promises to be fulfilled,
in prayer and praise and thanksgiving. For if we wait in faith, trusting
God unquestioningly, our Lord strengthens our heart and emboldens our
courage.
‘I am the vine, you are the branches’ was the theme of Robin’s early
September Bible Study session and eighteen participants enjoyed
discussing how to grow both as Christians and as a church.
On Sat 12th September, 38 of us donned our walking shoes and set off
across the Fynn Valley for the annual Ride and Stride event, raising
funds for The Historic Churches Trust and our local churches. We were
blessed with wonderful sunshine, a blue sky, hedgerows laden with
berries, and neighbours from Kesgrave, Little Bealings, Great Bealings,
Playford and Woodbridge striding out together and enjoying each
other’s company. Due to plentiful requests, we now plan to lead another
walk on the 3rd October.

Special mention goes to Martin Shakespeare who cycled 50 miles on the
day, visiting 30 churches as he raised sponsorship money.

Those of us who did it are very grateful to those of you who supported
us! We have managed to raise over £400!!!
On Sunday 13th Sally Wainman delighted the 10am service with a
beautiful song and sermon exploring how we can use the wisdom from
the ‘ups’ - the good times in our lives - to help prepare and sustain us in
the down times. The children coloured a snakes and ladders sheet during
the service and were encouraged to think of different things they could
pray for and say thanks for each time they landed on a snake or ladder.

Silver Screen Lite recommenced on Monday 14th with a showing of
Fawlty Towers. I hear audience numbers reached the maximum allowed
limit, testament to its popularity.
Tuesday 15th September saw our new ‘Lightwave Kesgrave and Fynn
Valley’ group launch. The group was formed as attendees of the
summer Alpha course enjoyed the weekly sessions so much that they
wanted to continue their Tuesday evening discussions together. We
began with a discussion on Matthew 5:14-16 in which Jesus tells us
‘You are the light of the world’ and we discussed what it means to be
Christians, His lamps, shining in the darkness. We never quite know
where our relaxed discussions are going to take us but we are a happy
chatty group and discussion flows easily. If you would like to join us,
details follow below.
Sunday 20th September saw All Saints Harvest Festival live streamed
from behind the church hall. A congregation of seventeen sat under blue
skies enjoying the service, warm sunshine, and being with Robin and
each other in person. Technology brought the rest of the congregation,

about sixty, to the service via Zoom - we may have been at home on our
sofas but we were all together in spirit.
Robin preached on Genesis 41, explaining how Joseph interpreted
Pharaoh’s dream and dutifully stored vast quantities of grain during 7
years of plenty, knowing 7 years of famine were to come and ensuring
there would be provision for all. Robin likened this to our present
situation; we have had times of plenty and we have stored up treasures
from God, both spiritual and practical, and now we are in a more
troubled time with coronavirus, and like Joseph it is now our time to
help others- spiritually and physically.

The 23rd and 24th continued with Zoom Bible Study evenings. Both Old
and New Testament Bible passages were discussed by the group and
explained further by Robin. These sessions are always interesting,
enlightening, and well worth joining. We meet fortnightly and it really
helps those wanting to understand the Bible in greater depth. Each
session is standalone, so no problem joining whenever you are free.

Jennie Fidler continues to host creative Messy Church sessions on
Zoom, plus supportive fellowship ‘Coffee and Chat’ sessions. These
weekly sessions alternate and take place on Tuesday mornings. Ollie
Scase continues as an inspirational youth minister, while returning as
our much loved Friday evening Quiz master.

Thursday’s Morning Prayer and Sunday’s 8.30am, 12pm and 6.30pm
services continue with good and loyal attendance. And I hear Alice Rice
is playing beautifully on the organ and that it means so much to those
attending who miss singing hymns.
And so onwards into October, using September’s lessons! Let us
continue our patient endurance with good heart, faith, imagination,
courage, hope and plenty of enjoyable fellowship together. And of
course, let us continue to radiate our Lord Jesus’ light and love into our
parish of Kesgrave and beyond. I send you all love!

Helen Wittgreffe

NEW LIGHTWAVE GROUP – Do join us as we spread Light
across Suffolk
Lightwave is a Church of England initiative that began two years ago.
Today Lightwave is based at Otley college, has its own Archdeacon,
and groups meet weekly all over Suffolk. Lightwave are, to say the
least, a lively lot, totally dedicated to shining the light of Jesus in
Suffolk.

The name Lightwave comes from the idea of lightwaves being the way
in which light spreads into dark places. As Christians, we should be
light in the darkness, showing others the way to faith, and beacons of
encouragement, kindness and hope. Together we can make the world a
brighter place if each of us shine.
We meet alternate Tuesday evenings at 7pm. The group was formed
following this summer’s Alpha Course; we enjoyed the course so much
that when it finished we simply wanted to continue. The core of us
relaunched as a Lightwave group, and now we’d love you join us.
A typical meeting begins with discussing a short video clip that we’ve
watched at home during the week, this always stimulates discussions
and before we know it, we are off, in the direction God decides to take
us! This is a very chatty group. Nicky Gumbel video clips are very
popular with us, he passionately exudes God’s love (like our Robin) and
it’s contagious.
Often people find it hard to talk about faith to office colleagues, non-
Christian friends, and even other Christians; and why is it when
someone asks ‘what did you do on Sunday?’, we say, ‘had a BBQ, saw
the grandchildren, went to the beach’ but very rarely rave about the
great time we thoroughly enjoyed at church? We discuss this, and as we
discuss it we start to shine, you can see it, people faces light up as they
ask their questions, tell their stories, encourage each other in faith and
find their faith voices. We enjoy our meetings, and our aim is to take
that brightness, the Light of Christ, out into our community.
If you fancy a ray of light on a dark autumn evening just come along,
you’ll know almost everyone. Contact Helen Wittgreffe on 07825
004585 or [email protected] and I’ll send you the
fortnightly video to watch and the Zoom link for the meeting. Our
Lightwave group is led by myself and Rev Tracey James. Don’t be shy,
this is a great group.

APCM
The Annual Parochial Church Meeting is to be held on Thursday 22nd
October in Church, commencing at 7.30pm. This is a little later in the
year than normal because of the Pandemic. Each year we hope to have
three new members joining the Council and to that end if you would
like to be considered for election please contact Robin (Rev R Spittle,

(623388 or email [email protected]). Similarly, because of
the Covid 19 Social distancing restrictions imposed those wishing to the
attend the Annual meeting should also contact Robin to ensure
permitted numbers are not exceeded.

BIBLE STUDY
Our next Bible Study will focus around the words of Jesus “stay in the
city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Luke 24:49.

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in our life and how was it illustrated
in the relationship between Elijah and Elisha in the Old Testament?

Identical sessions will take place on Tuesday October 6th (8.00pm) and
Wednesday October 7th (7.15pm) and both will last an hour. I want to
both welcome back “old hands” and also introduce “beginners” to the
delight of Bible Study through Zoom.

Simply contact me by email [email protected] or text
07443924285 and I will let you have the “Link”.
Finally the next of our pair of “Sermon Preparation” sessions will be
taking place on week commencing Tuesday October 20th (7.15pm –
Old Testament) and Wednesday October 21st (8.00pm – New
Testament)

PRAYERS
In Colossians 4:2-6, Paul tells us to be persistent in prayer, always
giving thanks to God, no-matter what the situation. Prayer is hugely
important, especially now as we look to a very uneasy Autumn and
Winter. Each Wednesday a group of people in the church pray for
people we know who are in need, for our church and what's going on in
the World. Whilst the church has been mostly closed, this has continued
as shared prayers by email, making those people we pray for

anonymous where requested. These prayers have become very popular,
as a way for many more people to join in doing something to make a
difference. Prayer requests (for anything) are sent to
[email protected] or phoned in on 07857 838678 by
Tuesday evening, and John puts them together in a respectful structure
to bcc to everyone who can receive the email prayers so we can all join
in the same prayers.
Praying together for the same things has a special importance and
significance. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace
of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus" Phillipians 4:6-7. Please contact John if you
would like to add something for the weekly prayers and/or to receive the
weekly prayers. Just send in whatever is on your heart, don't worry
about using perfect English.

If your prayer need is urgent, remember you can instead ask for your
prayer to go on the Prayer Chain, which is sent to a number of faithful
ministers and people who will be praying within 24 hours and often
straight away. For the prayer chain you can also contact Sybil Holbrook
on 07428 001819 or email [email protected].

With thanks, John

THE ASK JOURNAL Thoughts from my garden….

One of the things that has really stood out to me this year (apart from
the obvious with Covid, lockdown etc!) is how incredibly blessed we
have been with the weather. I am sure there have only been a handful of
occasions when I haven’t been able to get washing dry on the line, and
the water butts in the garden seem to have frequently run dry. I think
we would all agree that the sunshine and warmth have helped us endure
these unprecedented times immensely, as we’ve been able to enjoy
seeing blue skies through our windows, sitting in the garden or a walk in
the great outdoors.

Last weekend I decided to give our garden a bit of a tidy up. Although
there are tomatoes still ripening, mini peppers forming and a few
wildflowers blossoming, the sweet peas were looking crispy, and the
lavender needed cutting back. As I tugged at the tough stalks of the
sunflowers, trying to uproot them, I thought back to the day in April
when we had had sown the seeds, trying to find an activity with the
resources we had to hand, that might create a sense of normality in
between frightening news reports and the government daily briefing. I
looked at the multitude of seeds on the flower heads, spiralling in the
most wonderful pattern, and thought how amazing it was that despite
what the world had encountered since early spring, and the fact that life
as we knew it seemed to virtually come to a halt, the seasons had still
come and gone, and nature had endured, as had we too. And I also
thought how amazing that from a few seeds, some soil and water and
light, we had watched seedlings sprouting, experienced the joy of the
bright yellow flowers later on in the summer, and now as autumn
approaches, the birds and squirrels would in turn enjoy the fruits of the
harvest – a feast of hundreds of sunflower seeds! This term at Zoom
Messy church, our theme is creation. As I sat with the sunflowers, I
was reminded of the verse from Genesis – “God saw all that he had
made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31) and I gave a prayer of
thanks for the beauty of nature and God’s wonderful world, and it’s
capacity to calm and uplift us, and give us hope, in the good times and
the bad.

Autumn is my favourite season, and so instead of sadness that the
garden was past it’s best and the summer was over, my thoughts turned
to the beauty of the coming months when the leaves change colour, red,
spotty toadstools emerge, and shiny conkers are collected! I also
pondered on what the coming months would bring in terms of the
pandemic. Whilst we’ve begun to get used to having a bit more freedom
as restrictions have lifted over the summer, now Covid cases are on the
rise again and the ‘rule of six’ has been introduced, it has highlighted
that this pandemic is nowhere near over. That familiar feeling of
uncertainty that we have all carried with us for the past few months,

bubbled to the surface again as I pottered away. Suddenly, I became
aware of a flutter of movement in the corner of my eye, and then had the
feeling that I was being watched. Rory Robin (or perhaps it was Rosy,
I’m never quite sure!) a frequent visitor to the garden, was sitting right
by my feet and peering at me with beady black eyes, head cocked to one
side. He studied me for a moment, then darted towards the soil in the
pots I had just emptied, pecked at something moreish, and flew off
again onto the fence. I love Robins, the gardener’s friend! Again, I was
reminded of a bible passage from Matthew 6 - “Therefore I tell you, do
not worry about your life….Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow
or reap, or store away in barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?….Can any one of you by
worrying add a single hour to your life?” I think most of us would admit
we are finding it difficult not to worry about Covid at times. But I truly
felt in that moment that God was reassuring me that ultimately, he is in
control and that whilst it was important that I cared about the situation, I
was to place my trust fully in him over the coming weeks and months,
and that he would sustain me, and indeed all of us.

HARVEST GIVING AND FIND FOODBANK
From now onwards we will be collecting for the FIND FOODBANK
again, but only non-perishable items please; you can bring tins, packets
etc to any of the main services and I will take them to FIND HQ at
regular intervals.

Alternatively, you can donate to FIND online or send them a cheque.
All the details are on their
website: https://www.findipswich.org.uk/support-us

FIND are always grateful for donations because it gives them the
freedom to buy what is most needed and to buy fresh produce too to
make up the food 'parcels'.
If you have any queries please look at FIND's website or phone
me: Sally Wainman 07807 984589 Thank you!

HARVEST SONG
Conkers from chestnuts, children at play
Red, gold and yellow leaves falling each day
Give thanks to God, Give thanks to God

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harvest from countries all the world round
Red, gold and yellow leaves carpet the ground
Give thanks to God, Give thanks to God
~~~~~~~~~~~
Beautiful colours from trees brown and bare
Wind blowing swiftly through clear autumn air
Give thanks to God, Give thanks to God

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sow your seeds carefully, choose them with love
Harvest the friendship and the Peace from above
Give thanks, give thanks, give thanks to God!
ASK WEBSITE
Our new church website www.askesgrave.org has been up and running
for a few months now, but remains an ongoing project, particularly
during the coming days and weeks in light of COVID-19 developments.
We are trying to regularly update notices and information as they
become available, as well as adding items onto our pages on The
Church of England’s ‘A Church Near You’ site –
https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/2061/
Available on both websites are the Rev Robin Spittle’s ‘Thought for the
Times’ videos, which can be accessed easily from the home pages. If
you are on Facebook, please like and follow us on our page – All Saints
Church Kesgrave
https://www.facebook.com/Askesgrave/
– where we will also upload important developments and information,
videos and ideas for prayer and worship.
KESGRAVE LIBRARY NEWS
Kesgrave Library is pleased to announce the exciting news that we have
reopened for browsing. There are, however, some guidelines in place.
Please see below: -
• Only 3 customers are allowed in the library at any one time.
Queuing may be experienced at times of heavy demand.
• All returned items are to be placed through our letterbox, to enable
us to quarantine them for 72 hours.
• Browsing is limited to approximately 15 minutes.
• There is a one-way system in place.
• Customers are required to anti-bac their hands before they begin
browsing.
• It is mandatory for customers to wear a facemask that covers both
their nose and mouth, unless they have an exemption.
• Customers are asked to complete a Track & Trace form which is
kept securely and destroyed after 21 days, if no-one contacts us to
say they have tested positive for COVID-19.
Select & Collect – during the last two months, the library has been
running a Select & Collect service. This allows customers to phone up
and ask staff to put up to 10 books together for them to collect at an
arranged time. This has proved very popular and we are continuing this
service for customers who wish to use the library but are not ready to
come in and browse.
If you would like to have a selection of books put together, please ring
on 01473 626103 during our opening times.
Computer usage – the library has one bookable computer available. If
you would like to use this, please either ring (01473 626103) or email us
on [email protected]. Sessions are limited to 30 -
minutes but can be extended to 50 minutes for the completion of online
forms or job applications.
Printing, scanning and photocopying – these services are now all
available. We ask customers to use contactless payment where possible.
If this is not possible, please bring the correct money.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the library very soon.
Thank you for all your support.
