19th Annual Theater Night
Shrek the Musical

By: Jamie Huffar

On Thursday, July 13 the Chamber’s Cultural Arts
Committee held its annual Theater Night at the Art Park
Players theater in Deer Park. Art Park’s
production of Shrek: The Musical was a major hit for kids
of all ages and was even featured on Fox 26 News. The
show was hilarious and well done with highly talented
cast and crew, creative costumes and props, and sets
that made you feel like you were right at home in the
swamp with Shrek. Green was the theme of the
night- including green punch, Shrek ears, and a yummy
cheesecake with “swamp sauce” to keep the Shrek spirit
going. Dinner and show tickets sold out and nearly every
show seat was filled bringing a great crowd together to
support theater arts and the work of the chamber.

Proceeds from theater night benefit scholarships for
students at San Jacinto College and Texas Chiropractic
College. Both of the 2017 scholarship recipients- Dalia
Trejo with San Jacinto College and Kelsy Demelo from
Texas Chiropractic College were on hand for theater
night to assist in everything from setting up dinner to
showcasing items during the auction. A live auction was
held during intermission with twelve different themed
packages and helped raise over $5000 for future
scholarships; thank you Auctioneer Mark Beaver. A few
items were even donated back and auctioned again,
showcasing the great spirit of giving in our local business
people and citizens. Overall the night was a huge success
and everyone had a great time. The chamber would like
to thank our presenting sponsor, Thrivent Financial, for
their support in making theatre night possible. We’d also
like to thank Ms. Jackie Welch for her devotion to the
Cultural Arts Committee and her many hours of
organizing, planning, and promoting to ensure a great
night for all! A special thank you to Art Park
Players Director, Susan Mele for partnering with the
Chamber during this event.
