We were able to recognize the 2017 Business of the Year – McDonald’s and
their owners Nelly and Mariselle Quijano. We heard an update from our
chamber President and CEO Cristina Womack and we listened to Mayor Johnny
Isbell as he shared his final “State of the City” address. We are grateful to
Mayor Isbell for the many years of service he gave to Pasadena.

Growth is happening in our backyard. From the ship channel industries and
their many construction projects to all across our city in the form of new retail
and restaurants, Pasadena is coming of age right before our eyes!

I encourage you to watch the Mayor’s State of the City Address Pasadena
Channel prepared I also want to encourage you to drop by the Pasadena
Chamber of Commerce to pick up a copy of our 2017 Resource Guide
magazine. If you think Pasadena’s best days are behind her, you’ve not heard
about the exciting future that lies ahead!

A Letter From the President:

Members and Friends,
It seems like just yesterday I shared with you what your chamber is
working on to make 2017 an impactful year and how you can
incorporate the chamber into your new year’s resolutions!
The year is off and running and for those that missed our Annual State
of the City event recently you didn’t have the chance to hear about
all the great things happening in both YOUR chamber and YOUR city.
Some examples include the many capital improvement projects, the
plethora of new businesses and restaurants who have chosen
Pasadena to call home and all that your chamber accomplished in
2016. I encourage you to take time to read the Annual Report
enclosed to see how YOUR Chamber stacks up.
Opportunities for networking, professional development and
marketing your business can be found at one of the many events
coming up through our Regional Chamber luncheon for the State of
the Precinct, Pasadena Hispanic Business Council Breakfast Mixer, Young Guns Lunch with Leaders
panel, or even attending Membership 101 to learn about how to maximize your investment in the
chamber.
The spring also brings time for being outdoors, so we invite you to join us for one of our upcoming
fundraising events: Rugged Race 5K raising funds for playgrounds or tracks for PISD campuses or the
Industrial Appreciation Golf Tournament as we honor Dixie Chemical as the 2017 Industry partner of
the Year. We believe there is something for everyone and here to help you find what that is for your
organization.
As Pasadena prepares for new leadership and Mayor Johnny Isbell’s term comes to a close, we invite
you to attend the Chamber’s Mayoral Candidates Forum. This non-partisan event is designed for the
entire community as a way to hear from all candidates running for Mayor and their vision for the future
of Pasadena. The chamber will remain neutral and does not endorse candidates but does encourage
participation in the process. As your voice for business and promoting the prosperity of Pasadena’s
business and citizens we look forward to hosting this event.
The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce mission is to promote economic development and community
growth to ensure prosperity for all of Pasadena’s businesses and citizens. We have programs in place to
grow an organization committed to connecting our community in new and innovative ways by
introducing new ideas and change. On behalf of our Board of Directors and Staff, I would like to thank
you for your investment in the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.
Enjoy this month’s newsletter as we begin an exciting spring season!

Best Regards,

Cristina Womack

2017 State of the City Address

Announcing 2017 Business of the Year

On Thursday, February 16, 2017, more than 600 individuals gathered at Pasadena Convention Center for the Pasade-
na Chamber’s Annual State of the City Address where the 2017 Business of the Year was announced. Nelly Quijano &
Mariselle Quijano McDonald’s Owners were named 2017 Business of the Year by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

“This award means the world to me not only because we work in Pasadena, but because I’m from Pasadena,” said
Mariselle Quijano on accepting the award. Nelly Quijano moved from New York to Pasadena in 1984 opening their first
McDonald’s franchise. Today Nelly and daughter Mariselle Quijano, own 27 restaurants in Pasadena, Houston, La Porte,
Friendswood, Webster, League City, Pearland and Galena Park.

Besides the numerous awards the Quijano’s received both through the McDonald’s corporation and as individuals in our
city, their direct involvement with community matters is held in high regards. Awards such as the McDonald’s
Regional Strategic Leadership Team, Customer Satisfaction Regional Pillar Leads, Paul Schrage Marketing Excellence
Award, Golden Arch Award, People First Award, the Streetfighter Award, and many other certainly set them apart from
most businesses.

Personally, Nelly and Mariselle were recognized within the Pasadena Independent School district with the PISD
Distinguished Citizen Award and Distinguished Alumni Award respectively. In 2014, Mariselle was also named The
Pasadena Chamber’s Citizen of the Year, the highest honor provided to an individual in Pasadena. When asked to explain
their inspiration and motivation for business excellence and community service, the Quijanos responded by saying,
“We’ve always believed in playing an active role in our community. Education has been and continues to be very
important to us and a privilege to serve alongside.” Mariselle is a product of PISD and proud to currently serve as a
PISD Board Trustee and as a part of several scholarship judging committees. McDonald’s is also the title sponsor for the
premier Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament where proceeds go directly to the PISD Education Foundation to use
towards funding classroom grants. In 2016, they began “McTeachers Nights” where all proceeds are donated to the PISD
Education Foundation and has the potential to raise over $45,000 in charitable dollars.

Active participants with the City of Pasadena as well they recently donated $10,000 towards the purchase of additional
protection for the Pasadena Police Officers. In their minds, there was no hesitation to give and when the opportunity
came forward, it was an automatic, ‘YES!’ The Quijano’s’ shared, “We are so proud to have grown up in Pasadena, feel
blessed to be residents of Pasadena, and having businesses here has certainly made our dreams come true allowing us
to give back to the city. Our relationship with all aspects of Pasadena and the surrounding areas is truly an honor!”

Mariselle was nominated and chosen as our chamber’s 2014 Citizen of the Year. Considering the Quijano’s involvement
in many area chamber of commerce organizations, the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is blessed to have them on
their team!

The event was also a great opportunity for both the Chamber and the City of Pasadena to showcase some of the great
things happening in Pasadena. Mayor Johnny Isbell delivered the city’s address talking about all things Pasadena.
“There is so much happening in our city I can’t help but marvel at the changes I’ve seen,” said Mayor Isbell.

Mayor Isbell reflected not only on the accomplishments from 2016 but his entire career. While looking
forward to the future of Pasadena with new businesses opening. Isbell then proceeded to note on all the new
developments the city will start seeing in 2017, including Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, Pappas Bar-B-Q,
Starbucks, Sycamore Grounds Coffee Shop, Bush’s Chicken, Salata, Krispy Kreme and more.

“In my time in office, we’ve done nearly half a billion dollars’ worth of infrastructure projects...thank you for entrusting
this city and its future to me for all these years. It has truly been an honor and privilege” said Mayor Isbell ending the

address.

Following Isbell’s address Chairman of the Board; Kevin Jeter and President/CEO; Cristina Womack presented him with
a paver to be placed at the Pasadena Pet Adoptions Center to not only celebrate his 33 years of serving Pasadena, but
also recognize his love for animals.

Womack then proceeded to present the Chamber’s Annual Report showcasing 2016 accomplishments and successes.
“Hopefully this will help put in perspective the things that your chamber is already doing and things that you are
seeing,” said Womack.

She ended the event as she talked about plans for the Chamber to continue its efforts to connect the
community in ways that have not been done before. “The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce mission is to promote
economic development and community growth to ensure prosperity for all of Pasadena’s businesses and citizens. We
have programs in place to grow an organization committed to connecting our community in new and innovative ways
by introducing new ideas and change,” said Womack.

Ambassador Spotlight - Crista Welch

I’m an Independent Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. My
husband John and I have been married for five years and we have a
four-year old daughter named Alexis. We are members of the First
Baptist Church of Pasadena where we have enjoyed serving in
different ways. One of the things that I did before Mary Kay was
teaching in Pasadena ISD for several years. With Mary Kay I enjoy
enriching women’s lives with complementary pampering sessions using
Mary Kay’s top rated skin care and color cosmetic products.

As a member of the Chamber I have enjoyed meeting many
members of the community at Chamber events. Being an active part
of the Chamber has led to new contacts and customers, enhancing my
growing business. The Chamber and my relationships there mean a
great deal to me personally and professionally. I have personally
enjoyed and professionally benefitted from the Chamber’s networking
opportunities through various events and serving on different
committees.

Business Honor Roll

We applaud these individuals, organizations, and firms that have renewed their financial commitment to the
growth of our community through their continued investment in the chamber. We appreciate each and every
one of you. Congratulations on celebrating your anniversary this month!
