Continued from Pg. 1

At the risk of sounding like “business as usual,” I wanted to provide my perspective on one of the
Chamber’s recent events as an example of the value and quality your chamber offers.
In 2014, right after our current President/CEO came on board at our Chamber, a decision was
made to revamp the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo. The Board of
Directors was and is determined to forge productive relationships with everyone in the
community; most especially, PISD. In partnership with PISD, the Chamber restructured our
business expo calling it the “Partners in Education Business Expo.” The focus was to provide a
time for relationship building between PISD staff so that they could seek out vendors for various
personal and professional needs. The expo provides “shopping” time under one roof before the
busy school year begins. In my opinion, the Partners in Education Business Expo is one of the best
changes experienced at our Chamber. This year’s was, once again, a huge success.
Almost 100 vendors participated in our expo with approximately 850 attendees. Participants
included PISD administrators, staff, and teachers from all aspects of the educational community
as well as private citizens and local businesses. The event allowed them to build strong business
relationships with Chamber members and furthers the mission of creating prosperity in Pasadena.
If you are a member of our Chamber, I hope you will join me in congratulating our chamber staff
on a job well done. If you are not yet a member, I am tempted to ask, “Why not?” The
relationships, resources and responsiveness of the chamber provide great value as a small
business owner.
And, if you are looking for employment and have account management experience, the Pasadena
Chamber of Commerce continues to search for its final team member as Member Services
Coordinator.
I am proud to serve as Chairman of the Board to such a tremendous and effective organization.

“We are all precious in His sight.”
Sincerely,

Kevin Jeter

A Letter From the President:

Members & Friends,
I continue to be amazed at the outpouring of support our community has received
during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. We asked and you answered in an
overwhelming way whether it was volunteering your time, donating items or
providing resources for our community. I am so proud to call Pasadena home and
know that despite the recovery efforts that will continue for the months ahead, we
have the people committed to giving back and your chamber has resources
available to help meet your needs. Despite the heartbreaking news reports of
damages to homes, schools and businesses, Pasadena remains strong and is
working together. We know that through the storm Pasadena ISD, the City of
Pasadena, several area churches and non-profit organizations worked diligently
to provide a safe place for evacuees and had hundreds of volunteers serving that
made lasting impacts on the lives of families in need.
By now most businesses are open and operating and on the road to recreating
normalcy which is important for the overall economic health of our region. We
are very grateful that our chamber received no damage which allows us to focus
on connecting our members during this time and continuing to move forward
offering assistance. You will find several resources in the newsletter for your reference as we know needs are unique
among our members. Please be sure to communicate and respond to chamber emails so that we know what your
specific needs, resources and availability are.
In an attempt to press on, I hope this month’s newsletter serves as a resource for learning about what your chamber is
doing to connect your community both before and after the effects of Harvey. We also have had many recent successes
and celebrations that we certainly don’t want to miss sharing amidst the storm.
I would like to congratulate our 2017 Artist of the Year James Guthrie with Thrivent Financial for his many contributions
to area non-profit organizations focused on preserving the arts in Pasadena. We also extend our appreciation to the
nearly 100 organizations and businesses who participated in our Business Expo that brought in more than 850
attendees from PISD and beyond.
In the last few months we have seen more than 30 members join our chamber, we invite you to join us in welcoming
them to our community and consider using a chamber member when looking for products or services. Now is the time
to think local first and rely on those businesses who also give back through investing in the work of the chamber to
ensure our city continues to remain the place to be for building business and supporting community.
Again, thank you for your continued support and willingness to give during this trying time. Be sure to follow us on
social media so you can stay up to date on needs of the community if you are looking to volunteer or donate as we
move forward even stronger. Know that we are Pasadena Strong and we are here for you!

Best Regards,

Cristina Womack

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of

those affected by the historic and

catastrophic damage of Hurricane

Harvey. We are fortunate that the

WEARE Chamber office received no damage
and we are open for business. Please
feel free to contact us with any
questions or concerns as our Pasadena
STRONG community continues to recover. If you
haven’t followed us on Facebook, then
please do as that is where we are
posting most up to date news on

business openings, shelter needs and

volunteer opportunities. These needs change very rapidly as our community responds in such overwhelming

ways. YOUR Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is here to help our citizens and businesses during this difficult

time. We have put together a list of helpful resources for you. Please follow us on social media for constant

updates on ways to contribute during our recovery process. We are now more than ever Pasadena Strong!

We know that by working together to connecting our community, recovery will happen for all of us.

It is very important that folks apply for disaster assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. We encourage
everyone affected by Harvey to access this website and file a claim with the Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA), regardless of level of damage. This does not guarantee assistance, but it serves to help ensure that our city
qualifies for any FEMA assistance that may be available in the future.

If you are eligible for individual assistance, this is the first step in registering with FEMA. Please log-on and follow the
registration process. If you are unable to access through the website, you may register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA
(3362).

Luncheon to hear an update on the 85th Legislative Session and potential
needs of their respective districts post Harvey. Let’s start a new conversation about money.

At the local level there are 2 items we want to educate our members on. The Houston Bay Area
first is a chamber endorsement supporting Pasadena ISD in a Tax Ratification 17450 El Camino Real
Election in November that will allow our school district to become
comparable to surrounding community’s tax rate and continue to advance Houston, TX 77058
the mission of the district. We encourage you to vote For Prop B on the ballot 281-461-6200

The 2nd item relates to the proposed public transportation system from [email protected] Financial Associate

Funding for this transportation is available through utilizing existing federal 28304 R6-16
funds combined with a local match. In the past, the local match was split
between Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and Pasadena
Second Century Corporation (PSCC). Given the timing, CDBG funds cannot
be considered and allocated until the next fiscal year beginning October 1,
2018. This explains why PSCC recently approved funding for the project to
begin prior to the other funds becoming available.

Public meetings will be held allowing business owners and citizens to voice
their opinion regarding this new transportation option and the proposed
routes. The routes and bus stops will continue to be monitored and adjusted
on an on-going basis. There are plans for ten bus shelters to be installed
about 6 months after the start of bus service, after Harris County Public
Transit confirms locations with greatest ridership. Due to the recent events
related to Hurricane Harvey these meetings are being rescheduled and will
be communicated in the weeks to come.

Your chamber will keep you updated on opportunities to learn more about
all of the above items so you can remain informed on what’s happening in
and around Pasadena.

3rd Annual Partners in Education
Business Expo

By: Suzette McDowell

On August 17, we hosted our 3rd Annual Partners in
Education Business Expo in partnership with the
Pasadena Independent School District. The
Pasadena Convention center filled with nearly 80
vendors and over 850 attendees. Attendees had the
opportunity to network and learn more about the
different services and businesses in Pasadena, while
enjoying food and drinks from 7 area restaurants.

Throughout the event raffle items brought by all
of the vendors were awarded out to attendees via text
messages, such as gift cards, massages, plants, a bike
and more!

Overall the event was a success and was very well
received by the PISD faculty and staff. The
Pasadena Chamber is proud to host events such as
this one that allow for our school district to work
together with our business community and looks
forward to hosting this event again next year.
We’d like to say a very special thank you to our all
of major sponsors for this event: Pasadena ISD, City of
Pasadena, Port Houston, Miles A/C Service, Hawthorne at
Crenshaw and InkSpot Printing.

The school with most attendance will receive a $500
grant donated by Phelps Insurance. Stay tuned for the
name of the winning school.

A survey will be sent to all of our vendors. Please take
the time to answer this 5 minute survey to share your
experience and help us grow our event.
