Welcome to 4th grade!

Math homework is an important part of your child’s learning. It provides a daily practice of skills
taught in class and the opportunity to review skills previously taught. Your child will have math
homework Monday through Thursday. Each day’s homework assignment consists of 4 to 5 math
problems. For this to be of value to your child, I am asking you to review your child’s homework each
night, help him/her find any mistakes, and recheck the work after corrections have been made.
Reviewing homework with your child helps him/her understand the importance of working towards
accuracy. The math standards require students to use a variety of strategies when solving problems,
so celebrate the variety of ways your child is able to solve problems. If you have any questions about
how to help your child, please contact me. Mrs. King, our math coach, is also available to help you if
needed.

In addition to the 4 to 5 problems each night, students are expected to learn and know the
multiplication facts through 12s. Fact timings will be given several times each nine weeks. The ability
to quickly recall math facts is just as important for math as knowing letters and sounds are for
reading. I’ll review grade level expectations for fluency and accuracy during Open House. A copy of
the fact fluency timing will be available for you to take with you so you can make additional copies for
practice at home.

For the first week of school, math homework will be completed in the classroom. This will help your
child understand my expectations for homework completion. Please review the homework this week
with your child so you can also become familiar with my expectations for quality, completion and
accuracy. Math is more than just steps and procedures. Math requires our students to reason,
problem solve, and write effectively to communicate their thinking.

I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
