lBehaviors as Communication? A Dementia Patient’s Attempt to Connect. Jennifer Fitzpatrick, MSW, LCSW-C, CSP

Founder of Jenerations Health Education, Inc.

Caregivers and health care professionals are frequently frustrated by the behaviors exhibited by those diagnosed with permanent dementia. When we understand that these
challenging behaviors are sometimes the only way the patient can communicate, it helps us develop more patience and understanding. Join us for this informative program
on interpreting body language, reading signals and deciphering the mysterious behavioral language of dementia.

Keynote speaker Jennifer L. FitzPatrick MSW, LCSW-C, CSP is a gerontologist with over 20 years’ experience in working with older adults and older generations. Having started
her career in a nursing home at age 16, she is the founder of Jenerations Health Education, Inc., a full service training company. Jennifer FitzPatrick has been an education
consultant to the Alzheimer’s Association for nearly a decade and also has taught gerontology at the college level since 2001.

Bonfires Offer Unique

WITH PESACH BEHIND us, every day we
count sefirah, excitedly getting closer to Lag
B’Omer and the ginormous bonfire, roasted
marshmallows, hot dogs and campfire songs.

One of my favorite Lag B’Omer memories
was when I was in seminary in Israel, I went
with a few friends to a bonfire hosted by some
nearby local Israelis. I’ll never forget the songs,
the camaraderie and the incredibly sweet, thick
and delicious Israeli coffee one of the young
men made for me.

There was something very special about being
in Israel on Lag B’Omer with bonfires every-
where you looked. Here are some fun recipes
you can make over your own Lag B’Omer bon-
fire — or any time you light up the fire pit in

the backyard. Be careful — these recipes are
addicting. Chag sameach, and sing a few
Hebrew songs around your fire.

honored Sally Cooper Bleznak, founder and chair emerita of Women of Vision, who concep-
tualized the foundation to bring women closer to the world of philanthropy. Special guest Jane
Gershon Weitzman, founding vice president of Stewart Weitzman Retail, stressed that Jewish
people need to give more to Jewish causes. Penni Blaskey, Women of Vision chair, rolled out
the group’s new multi-year campaign, Expand Our Vision — Advance Their Future, which will
significantly grow Women of Vision’s endowment to increase annual grants to fund additional
social-change organizations and impact more lives each year. Gladys Bernstein and Annabelle
Fishman were the luncheon’s honorary co-chairs; Tracy Ginsburg and Kelly Dalsemer served
as program chairs.

Since 1994, Women of Vision has distributed more than $625,000 to 35 programs to help
women and girls in Greater Philadelphia and Israel access opportunities for social, economic
and personal growth to achieve their full potential. For more information on Women of Vision

July 1st Deadline to Support Jewish Schools Through Pennsylvania Tax Credit Programs

MICHAEL CZARNOMSKI | JE FEATURE

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: July 1 will be Pennsylvania taxpayers’ only opportunity in fiscal year 2016-17 to support Jewish pre-schools and day schools while
saving on state taxes through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC)
programs.

These programs provide significant tax credits for contributions to scholarship organizations approved by the commonwealth. One approved organization is the
Foundation for Jewish Day Schools (FJDS), created by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, in partnership with the area’s Jewish day schools, to encourage
community members to take advantage of this opportunity to support Jewish education.

Elliot Holtz, chair of the Foundation, further explained the July 1 date: Applications (by a business, or an individual in a special-purpose entity) submitted on or
before June 30 would be treated as falling in fiscal year 2015-16 and disregarded; but the EITC and OSTC programs have become so popular that they generally “sell
out” on the day applications open. Even if you need to speak to your CPA, “get your application in,” said Holtz. “You will have time to work through the details with
your advisor. By submitting an application, you’re indicating interest in participating. Applicants go into a pool. Those chosen from the pool are given 60 days to
make their payment. If a chosen applicant doesn’t make his or her donation, the state will simply choose another applicant from the pool, and this is how many
applicants get to participate.”

Holtz emphasized the vital boost the EITC and OSTC programs have given to Jewish education: “We have so few of our children in day schools, just 4 percent.
The EITC and OSTC programs have been incredibly important in attracting more students to the day schools and keeping them there. And any contribution, no
matter how small, helps.” The FJDS and the Orthodox public policy organization OU Advocacy, Holtz added, have been working with legislators to increase funding
for the EITC and OSTC programs. “The more applicants there are, the more likely it is that this effort will succeed.”

For more information on supporting Jewish pre-schools and day schools through the Foundation for Jewish Day Schools and the EITC and OSTC programs,
please contact Ellen Horowitz Matz at 215-832-0525 or [email protected] or visit jewishphilly.org/eitc.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum mourns the passing of our recent content.
of Holocaust survivor and Museum founder Rosalie Chris Lerman, wife
of the late Miles Lerman. She was a cherished friend who, along with
her husband, played an instrumental role in the creation of the Museum,
traveling the country and the world to put Holocaust memory on the
National Mall and make it a global force. Her lifelong devotion to
Holocaust remembrance and education and the countless lives she
touched will endure as her lasting legacy. The Museum sends heartfelt
condolences to her children, Jeanette (Joseph) Neubauer and David
(Shelley) Lerman, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
