A CALL TO ACTION

The $100,000

By Lynne Honickman
Among the saddest aftermaths of the recent killing of 58 innocent people in Las Vegas and 26 in Texas is the
sense among many that gun violence is inevitable in the United States, that politically powerful forces will always
protect the profits of gun manufacturers over the security of our citizens.
I refuse to believe that. I’ve worked for years trying to counterbalance the moneyed influence of the
National Rifle Association by promoting sensible, responsible safety laws. Seven years ago, I joined with
CeaseFirePA, an advocacy organization dedicated to helping raise the voices of communities determined to
end gun violence.
And now, I have to increase my efforts. To that end, the Honickman Foundation is offering a chall8e.n8g87e grant,
with a lead contribution of $100,000 to match donations made to CeaseFirePA.
I have always believed in the power of unified action by people on the ground to solve pressing problems.
Gun violence is an undeniable health crisis, producing horrendous stress in our communities, our families and
our children.
We are trying to build a stronger force to compete with the NRA’s influence in our state – and our nation. We
are going to fight on the ground in Harrisburg, and in communities large and small to keep families safe from
senseless gun violence.

BUT WE CAN’T DO IT ALONE. WE NEED YOU TO STAND WITH US.

I’m proud of the work already done by CeaseFirePA, the largest gun violence prevention organization in
Pennsylvania. Executive director Shira Goodman is an inspired, respected and proactive leader.
But we want to do more. We want an end to mass murders in our country, and know you do as well. So we ask
for your contributions – large or small as they may be. We plan to match those contributions, because we know
that effective lobbying takes money. The gun lobby has money – we need to fight on their turf.
Please understand, we don’t hate guns. But we hate what guns can do when they are not monitored by
commonsense laws that respect and protect life.

Challenge

As Ellen S. Alberding, president of the Joyce Foundation said: “Let’s start by challenging the assumption that
there’s no way to stop gun violence. Gun violence in the United States is not a constitutionally derived
inevitability. Gun violence – whether directed at a member of Congress or a child walking home from school –
happens because our elected officials have made a series of deliberate policy judgments that guns should be
easy to buy, sell and carry by nearly anyone, anywhere, any time.”
Our legislators must pass laws that are favored by most Pennsylvanians and Americans: Reporting
requirements for lost and stolen weapons, expanded background checks, limits on high-capacity magazines
and stricter regulation (or perhaps a renewed ban) on assault weapons. I’m asking you to stand up with us to
demand better from our elected officials. And if those lawmakers refuse to listen, I’m asking you to help vote
them out.

If we truly want to honor the memory of those lost to senseless killing,
thoughts and prayers are not enough.

A call to action is needed. Our $100,000 challenge grant is aimed to spur that action. THERE IS NO
AMOUNT TOO SMALL. Please imagine how much more we can do together. It’s all about what kind of world
we want here.

To meet the challenge, please send your tax-deductible contribution to:
CeaseFirePA, P.O. Box 60095, Philadelphia, PA 19102

or donate on line at www.ceasefirepa.org/donate. Thank you.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia
mobilizes financial and volunteer resources to
address the communities’ most critical priorities
locally, in Israel and around the world.

Israel70 events will take place all over the Greater Philadelphia region and were
planned in collaboration with all of our Jewish communities, so whatever your
interests and wherever you are, there are many events perfect for you. See the
sidebar below for the next three upcoming activities!

We are so excited to celebrate Israel with you. Be sure to visit the website
so we can keep you updated on new Israel70 articles and events. And stay in touch
on social media by using #Israel70Philly throughout the year! For more informa-
tion, contact [email protected] or 215.832.0828.

Commemorate,
Honor, Learn: Our
Israel70 Year Begins

IN 2018, ISRAEL turns 70 years old — a significant milestone in the life
of this vibrant country. And to commemorate the occasion, we’re pulling
out all the stops.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is thrilled to announce
Israel70, a year packed with outrageously fun and seriously thought-pro-
voking programming that will allow us to bond with the young Jewish homeland,
grapple with its evolution and celebrate its very existence.

Israel70 will be a year of building bridges: between our communities and Israel,
but also between our communities and one another. This will be a year of mak-
ing space for listening, empathy and reflection. No matter how you express your
support for Israel, no matter what the roots of your connection or your legitimate
questions may be, Israel70 welcomes you. This is a moment for us to come together
to honor and reflect, in so many ways, on the wonderfully diverse country that
is Israel.

And you’re invited!
To find out more, check out our brand-new section for Israel70 on our web-
site at jewishphilly.org/israel70. There, you’ll find information about our year
of events ranging from art exhibits, films and storytelling to lectures, learning
and conversations with Israeli change-makers. Some events will be festive, others
informative, but all will help you explore, celebrate and share the nuances of your
relationship with Israel.
At the Valley Forge Event Center on May 6, save the date — 5/6 — and join
us to celebrate Israel70 all day long at 5-6-70 Israel, our biggest Israel party of the
year. With delicious food, multiple performers, films, storytelling, games, sports,
a craft bazaar and so much more, this will be a birthday packed with revelry for
the whole family.
