Homeless Man Faces Probation for Burning
Minneapolis Synagogue
PROSECUTORS SAID THEY will ask for probation for Matthew
James Amiot, 36, a homeless man who pleaded guilty to burning
down a Duluth, Minnesota, synagogue on Sept. 9, JTA reported.

Amiot could have faced up to three years in prison for the fire
at 120-year-old Adas Israel Synagogue, but police said there was
no evidence the fire was a bias or hate crime.

Amiot said he was taking shelter in an alcove between the
synagogue and its sukkah when he used a lighter to set a fire. He
tried to extinguish the fire by spitting on it, but then walked away.

Damage to the property, which was declared a total loss, was
$117,000 for the building and at least $250,000 for religious items.

Trenton Attorney Resigns From Post Following
‘Jew Her Down’ Controversy
Stuart Platt, an attorney under contract with the city of Trenton,
New Jersey, resigned in the wake of a September executive
session during which City Council President Kathy McBride
used the term “Jew her down,” JTA reported.

Platt is relinquishing a $25,000 contract to be the city’s
redevelopment attorney.

“I am an American and I am a Jew. I am resigning because of
the disgraceful and shameful anti-Semitic remarks that were in
fact made by the Council president of the city of Trenton, Kathy
McBride,” Platt wrote. “The vitriolic and hateful anti-Semitic
comments were exacerbated by Councilwoman Robin Vaughn,
who defended McBride by saying that the word ‘Jew’ is a verb and
then claiming not to know this is an anti-Semitic slur.”

McBride and Council members George Muschal and Vaughn
— who both originally defended McBride — have since apologized.

Yeshiva University Democrats Unsanctioned for
Unapproved LGBTQ March
Yeshiva University’s College Democrats lost university sanctioning
this semester because the organization unofficially organized an
LGBTQ march without approval from the student government
or university officials, according to The Commentator, the
university’s independent student newspaper.

Without sanctioning, the group won’t be able to run events, receive
funding from student activity fees or hang up flyers on campus.

“There are certain perks that come with being a YU-approved
club on campus,” said Ariel Sacknovitz, president of the Yeshiva
Student Union. “But those come with rules of having to be
approved by the Student Council and needing Office of Student
Life approval for speakers and events as well. By breaking those
rules — even after being warned, and by opting out of — then
realistically, you don’t get the perks that come with it, such as the
Student Council funding and the club approval.”

Swastika Found at Tufts University
A swastika was found on a Jewish student’s dorm room door on
Sept. 15 at Tufts University — two days before Holocaust scholar
Deborah Lipstadt spoke on campus about rising anti-Semitic
rhetoric, JTA reported.

Tufts President Anthony Monaco said the incident was a
“cowardly act of hatred and ignorance” and a “direct attack on our
Jewish community and an affront to our values as an institution.”

Lipstadt thanked Tufts for its quick response, but cautioned
that the university should not be considered a place where there
is anti-Semitism and to “keep things in perspective.” l

Israeli Documentary Wins Emmy
Israeli hunting documentary Trophy won an Emmy for
Outstanding Nature Documentary at the 2019 News and
Documentary Emmys announced Sept. 24 in New York City,
The Jerusalem Post reported.

Trophy was directed by Shaul Schwarz with Christina Clusiau.
Israeli cable network YES Docu produced the documentary and
it was distributed by CNN. Alon Schwarz, who is Shaul Schwarz’s
brother, coproduced it, and it was edited by Halil Efrat.

The movie takes a look at exotic animal hunting — with cus-
tomers spending large sums to bolster private collections with
trophies made from zebras, lions and rhinos. It also discusses the
controversial topic of whether the industry’s existence is helpful
in the survival of endangered species.

Segregated Israeli Kindergarten Ordered Closed
An Israeli kindergarten that segregated students by race was
ordered closed.

The Times of Israel reported that children of Ethiopian
descent in Kiryat Gat had to use a separate entrance and
meet in an auxiliary room. The municipality then provided
transportation to those students to kindergartens and day cares
around town.

A parent of Ethiopian descent said on Facebook that after
she and her 3-year-old daughter were sent to a classroom of all
Ethiopian-Israeli children, she went to complain at municipal hall.

“Because of the color of their skin they cannot mix with other
children,” Sefy Bililin wrote. “My daughter is worth as much as
anyone else. She was born here and she is as good as anyone.” l

Homemade Ricotta Cheese: Minimal E ort,
Totally Worth It

FOOD
KERI WHITE | JE FOOD COLUMNIST

CALL ME LITTLE Miss Mu et — I’ve been enjoying curds and whey
since my sister advocated for homemade ricotta during a recent visit.

She said, “You will never buy the grocery store version again. It’s the
easiest thing to make, and it is so much better.” She was right.

I have since become mildly obsessed with the preparation, and a er
one semi-disastrous false start, have mastered the process. I researched
the method and discovered one important lesson — you must use regular,
standard pasteurized, nonorganic, nonraw milk and/or cream. Do not use
ultra-pasteurized.

I don’t know the science behind it, but organic dairy is o en ultra-
pasteurized, as is some standard dairy, which prevents it from forming
curds, as I learned the hard way. But more on that later. According to my
research, raw milk also does not form curds as desired for optimal ricotta,
although I have not learned that from experience.

Women of Vision
Celebrate 25 Years

ON SEPT. 24, 150 people gathered at the Rittenhouse Hotel to celebrate Women
of Vision’s 25th anniversary. The evening was a chance for guests to mix and
mingle and commemorate their legacy of empowering Jewish women and girls —
a mission as crucial today as it was a quarter-century ago.

Sheila Katz, CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women, gave the keynote
address and shared with the audience how her organization’s network of women
is living out their Jewish values and turning ideas into action.

For more information on Women of Vision, contact Iris Leon at
