ISRAEL ENGAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
We are thrilled to have Liat Hagbi, who is here this year as a Shinshinit (Shanat Sherut) - serving in Montreal as part of
Federation CJA Israel Engagement Experience. Liat brings us a taste of Israel like no one else! Join us every Shabbat
morning as Liat leads SHABABA (Shabbat Sababa) - Israeli-themed games and discussion for adults and kids of all ages
during Kiddush from 12-2 p.m. Liat prepares discussion topics relating to Israel, current events, and the weekly Parsha. Liat
also often speaks during Shabbat morning services to the entire congregation.

PROGRAMMING MESSAGE
THROWING CANDIES THIS PASSOVER
To begin the Seder night, world-renowned special needs educator, Reuven
Feuerstein, would warn the children around the table:
“Tonight is Seder night. This is an important occasion and we have much to read, so
we cannot be bothered with all sorts of questions. If you ask any questions, I will be
forced to punish you: I will throw lots and lots of candies at you. Understood?”
Unsurprisingly, the children spent the rest of the night asking many questions,
stopping only to collect the candies thrown at them by their professor.
This is but one of the many strategies that we can use to elicit questions and
involvement on Seder nights: prize-bearing quizzes and riddles, songs, stories, or
simply giving a candy to anyone who asks a question - regardless of the answer!
The Talmud even mandates that these tasty prizes be used as a means of keeping the children awake and involved during
the Seder (Pesachim 109a). As Maimonides explains in his 12th century guidelines for the Seder night:
"One should make changes on this night, so that one’s children will notice it and ask, ‘What makes this night different
from other nights?’ Distributing snacks, clearing the table before anyone has eaten, or snatching the Matzah away from
the others, and other games like that are all ways to keep things different." (Maimonides, Laws of Hametz and Matza,
Chapter 7:3)
While surrounded by family and friends, you have the opportunity to go around the table and have people share their
answers to the following question: “How am I different tonight and this year from previous years? What has changed this
year?”
This can be a wonderful way to mark the changes and differences in and around us, as well as a way to "catch up" with the
many guests at the Seder table.
This year, while sitting at your Pesach table, we invite you to think of the ways you might be able to “catch up” with your
family at ADATH. Our innovative and inclusive programs are in need of the unique questions that you will bring to the
table. Who knows, we might even throw some candies or sweets your way when you’re here.
From our family to yours, may your four cups overflow with health, happiness, and prosperity this Pesach.

RABBI ALEX’S MESSAGE
I would like to thank all those who have helped out during the recent winter months with our Minchah and Maariv
services. Over the past 12 winters. I must say, I don't remember our Minyan going as smooth as this past winter!
A reminder to anyone who would like to review their Bar Mitzvah Parsha, or their Haftora, or would like to learn a
Haftorah, or learn an Aliya from the Torah for a special occasion, or for a Yahrzeit, it would be my honor to study with you.
Also, if anyone would like to study, one-on-one, on any topic, it would my honor to study together with you.
And finally, if anyone would like a hospital visit, or home visit, please be in touch with me. In addition, if anyone would like
my children to sing for them, it again will be our honor. Please be in touch with me, at your convenience, by email,
[email protected], or by phone, 514-212-5157.
Happy Pesach!
Rabbi Alex Zwiebel, Assistant Rabbi
HANDBAGS OF HOPE
Bringing Dignity and Hope to Women in Need
Just before the start of the winter holidays, TEAM Sisterhood at ADATH initiated a project called Handbags of Hope. With
the overwhelming support from our community we were able to complete the project and deliver the result of our
campaign to the women at Auberge Shalom on the evening of their Chanukah Party.
It is with the tremendous help of our donors and sponsors, that what started out as a small gesture, turned into the
delivery of a little extra Chanukah light!
CEMETERY CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Who thought Healthcare would be this complicated? - Donald Trump
Who thought Cemetery would be this complicated? - André Zoldan
Some of you have already received a letter from me inquiring about your plans regarding plots, and others will receive this
letter before Passover. The intent is to simply get a feel for how many of our members would like plots, with no
commitment or obligation, for our planning purposes. I kindly ask that you take the time to reply. If I do not hear from
you, then I can only assume a non-interest indication.
Until then, I would like to share with you two important points, with the help of these two cartoons.
The first is Patience. Lets all try a bit more of it. And when it happens to you in line, think of this picture:
The other is Kindness. Being right is important, but getting along is even more important.
Sincere best wishes to all.
Happy Pesach!

TREASURER’S REPORT
We are happy to report ADATH is in a healthy state. We have no outstanding
debts.
We still have outstanding accounts receivable. We ask those members who
have not yet contributed their annual donations for membership, seats, and
Kol Nidre Appeal, to do so now. It can be done online, by credit card, by
cheque, or by a phone call to the Synagogue.
We are also grateful to members and friends who regularly support ADATH
by contributing to the Synagogue funds. Special funds can be earmarked to
acknowledge important family events. Beautiful donation cards can be sent
from our office.
An easy way to celebrate or commemorate an event is to sponsor a breakfast
or Kiddush. Please call the office for more information.
Thank you for your generous support.

Morning & Evening Daf Yomi
Daf Yomi (Page a Day Talmud Study) is the schedule of studying a page of Talmud a day. All over the world, thousands of
Jews each day study the same page of Talmud, thus connecting them in their pursuit of Torah knowledge. The Talmud is
the main repository of Jewish learning and, using the Daf Yomi cycle, can be completed in about seven and a half years.
This is a great opportunity to delve into the heart of Jewish learning, and get your day started with intellectual and
spiritual vigor. No previous knowledge is necessary, and you can attend every day or once in a while. We offer Daf Yomi
every morning and evening. Please see our weekly newsletter for exact times.
Shabbat Youth Groups
Our Shabbat youth groups meet every Shabbat morning starting at 10:00 a.m. This is one of the most popular and
successful programs at ADATH. We encourage all children to participate.
Expanded Shabbat Youth Groups
In addition to our ongoing Shabbat youth groups, we now have a popular, creative, and exciting program led by Rabbi
Alex, every Shabbat morning starting at about 10:30 a.m. Each week we choose a theme and feature related stories,
games, and healthy refreshments. Everyone is welcome!
Weekly Talmud Class
The Talmud is the main repository of classical Jewish learning. Each week, we may touch on issues of history, philosophy,

RABBI WHITMAN’S MESSAGE
“This is the bread of oppression our ancestors ate in Egypt. With “Yonina” in Tel Aviv
Let all who are hungry come in and eat.” With Allie McDavid
With this paragraph near the beginning of the Passover With Mayor Plante and others at City Hall
Seder, we introduce the dominant Pesach theme of
Matzah - the bread of oppression, the bread of poor With Marci at a wedding in Jerusalem
people. And we introduce the dominant Jewish theme of
hospitality - no Jew should be alone, uninvited. But
combining them into a single paragraph leads to an
ironic result: we are inviting those in need to share in the
food with the least taste! Shouldn’t our hospitality be
connected to our brisket instead of our Matzah?
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, in his commentary to the
Haggada, reminds us that Matzah represents two things:
it is the food of oppressed slaves, and it is the bread
eaten by the Jewish People as they marched from Egypt
to Sinai in freedom. And what transforms the first into
the second is the willingness to share. “One who fears
tomorrow does not offer his bread to others. But one
who is willing to divide his food with a stranger has
already shown himself capable of fellowship and faith,
the two things from which hope is born.”
That’s why we begin the Seder with inviting others to
join us (and why in the weeks before Passover we should
reach out to invite others, especially those who might
otherwise not be included). And we invite others
specifically with a connection to Matzah, in order to
transform it from a symbol of slavery into a symbol of
freedom.
Kol Dichfin, all who are hungry, means much more than
people who are hungry for food. It includes those who
are hungry for companionship, for friendship, for
acceptance, and for kindness. Let’s do our best to make
sure no Jew is hungry, for anything, this Passover.
Marci and I, and our family, wish you and your family a
happy, elevating, and nourishing Passover!
Rabbi Michael Whitman

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE
March, 2018
Dear ADATH Member,
One of the most enduring traditions of Judaism is honouring our families. The Torah calls us to honour our families during
their lives and to remember them when they are no longer with us.
Our Sisterhood is once again planning to publish a “Book of Remembrance 5779” to be used for Yizkor Services during
Yom Kippur, as well as during all other Yizkor Services throughout the year. Recalling the memories of our loved ones is
both an act of solemn piety and an expression of profound respect.
In this memorial publication, you will have the opportunity of honouring the memories of your loved ones. Please enter
the names(s) of those you wish to be included in our “Book of Remembrance” below and return to the synagogue, along
with your donation.
Sincerely,
TEAM Sisterhood

SALE OF CHOMETZ - 5778
Adath Israel Poale Zedek Anshei Ozeroff
Not only may we not eat Chometz on Pesach, it may not even be in our possession during the Holiday. The most simple solution
is to eat or give away any Chometz you may have as Pesach approaches. I will be happy to take any food you have and give it to
the non-Jewish needy. That which we find during the ‘Bedikas Chometz’ (Search for Chometz), we burn before Pesach. If you
wish to keep certain Chometz items for after Pesach, it is possible to do so by selling them to a non-Jew for the week of Pesach.
You may contact Assistant Rabbi Alex Zwiebel to act as your agent to arrange this sale for you. When you do so, it is important
to remember that you are selling your Chometz for that week - it does not belong to you and the non-Jew to whom it is sold has
the right to come and take it (and pay you for it). All sold items should be put in an area that can be closed off, taped shut, and
clearly labeled ‘sold.’
With the sale of the Chometz, you are also leasing to the non-Jew the property on which the Chometz sits. Therefore, you have
to tell Rabbi Alex where the Chometz is located.
You must arrange for the sale of your Chometz no later than 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 29, 2018. Preferably, you should contact
Rabbi Alex in person with the form below filled out. However, if you are unable to do so, you may fill out the form below and
send it to the ADATH office (but confirm we have received it by Thursday, March 29, 2018) by mail (223 Harrow Cr. Hampstead,
QC H3X 3X7), fax (514-482-6216), or email ([email protected]).

Where do you plan to be during Passover? __________________________________________________________________________________________
I give full power to Assistant Rabbi Alex Zwiebel to sell and transfer all legal title of all items owned by me (excluding that which I
will use or burn before Pesach) - knowingly or unknowingly - which are, or may contain Chometz according to Jewish law and/or
Tradition, and which the Mishnah Brurah, compiled by the Chofetz Chaim, describes as items which a Jew may not own during
Pesach*, to anyone of his choice and in any manner which he deems necessary. I also authorize Rabbi Alex to lease any property
where this Chometz is located. I also authorize Rabbi Alex to receive the buyer’s deposit and to appoint a substitute in his stead
if he wishes, with full power to sell and lease as described above. This sale is valid according to Jewish and secular law. The
present document has been written in the English language at the express request of the parties. Le présent document a été
