my ministry with Dr. King, who was a model for so many of my generation ministry

seeking to change a world disfigured by poverty, injustice and hopelessness.

Over the last four decades, my ministry has traversed the church, the academy,
the theatre, and concert halls around the world. Each of these communities
have become my village. My teaching, preaching, and creating music are
expressions of a single ministry. Each informs, enhances and inspires the other.
The apostle Paul writes:

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes

them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in

everyone it is the same God at work. – I Corinthians 12: 4-11

The different gifts I have been given all come from the same Holy Spirit and,
by God’s grace, I have been able to fashion my different gifts together into a
single expression.

My life’s journey has been an unplanned series of “coincidences,” but not of
serendipity. Ambassador Andrew Young often says: “coincidences are God’s
way of remaining anonymous.” The places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and
the experiences that I’ve had, simply could not have been planned. I discovered
early on that I had an affinity for music. I was fortunate to grow up in the
vibrant city of Detroit at a time when every student was exposed to music
and art and athletics.

My ordination date was quite intentional.
I wanted to link the beginning of my ministry

BUILDING the BELOVED COMMUNITY beyond SUNDAY

For more than 150 years, the First Congregational Church
has been reaching beyond its doors to meet the spiritual,
emotional, and physical needs of its Atlanta neighbors.
Whether literally providing cool water to thirsty passersby
needing respite from the heat and segregation of Jim Crow
Atlanta – or today offering cool jazz to the parched spirits of
audiences in need of musical relief from a stressful world – First
Congregational Church has always embraced its mission on
the corner of Courtland and John Wesley Dobbs to be a cornerstone in the building of the Beloved Community
beyond Sunday morning, touching the lives of people of all ages through
its outreach programs. Providing after-school tutoring to children
in need and child care support for working parents, offering cultural
enrichment through music instruction, addressing the food insecurity
of neighbors, reducing isolation and creating community for the
elderly – these are just some of the ways First Church has been meeting
community needs across the decades.

As we look to the future, we see the
strains on community all around us –
rising political polarization, a growing
economic divide leaving many behind
in poverty, greater technological
connectivity yet increasing isolation.
We are reminded of the prescient words of Reverend Dr. Martin
Luther King, in his 1967 book, Where Do We Go From Here? Chaos
or Community, when he urged us to make a choice between chaos
or community. At First Congregational Church we are clear that our
choice must be community. That is our heritage and our calling.
