Plenitude of Portrait
What is Portrait Photography?
Portrait photography is the process of taking a subject's picture in an
attempt to capture their personality. The element of consent separates
portrait photography from every other type of photography involving
people on the frame.
"A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who know he is being
photograph, and what he does with this knowledge is as much a part of the
photograph as what he's wearing or how he looks."
-Richard Avedon
But portrait photography hasnt always been that easy. In the late 18th
century, the photographic process behind a single portrait took immense
amounts of time, economically conscious efforts which greatly affected
how portraits were done
In 1839, Robert Cornelius shot the
first succesful portrait, self
portrait using the venerable
daguerreotype( an early
photograph produced on a silver
or silver-covered copper plate ).
Cornelius took advantage of the
light outdoors to get a faster
exposure and held this pose for a
whole minute.
Robert Cornelius's Self Portrait, 1839
Portrait of Two Men by David Octavius Hill and Robert Shooting with the daguerreotype
Adamson required between 3 to 15 minutes of
exposure time depending on the
available light - making portraiture
incredibly impractical if not
impossible. It is called
"Daguerreotyping", as an
aesthetically satisfying form of
creative expression. Scottish artists
David Octavius and Robert Adamson
incorporated heavy influences of
Rembrant painting styles,
particularly intentional lightning,
hand placement, and posing to their
photos. The portrait below shines a
welcome light of liveliness and grace
against the stiff and cold subjects of
the daguerreotype.
To improve exposure times, more
sophisticated lens designs was
created which allowed for greater
light-gathering capabilities.
Leaps and bounds of technological
advancements brought down to
15-minute long exposure times to
20-40 seconds, to almost
instantaneous captures.
Pictorialism and Naturalistic
Photography
May Prinsep, as Beatrice Cenci (1866) The Pictorialists wanted to shift
focus from objective
representation of subjects into a
form of creative expression which
highlights the subject's beauty,
composition, atmosphere and
tonality. To Pictorialists , the
photographer's vision was front
and center to the photographic
process. Staging scenes,
compositing five different
negatives into one image, soft-
focus lenses. All were fair game if
it added to the artistic value of
photograph.
"Fading Away " by Henry Peach Robinson. A composite photograph made form 5 different
negatives
German Stowaway by Augustus Peter Henry Emerson was a proponent
Frederick Sherman, 1905 of naturalism. In his book,
Naturalisitic Photography for
Students of the Art (1899), Emerson
claims that "a photograph should be
direct and simple and show real people
in their own environment, not
costumed models posed before fake
backdrop or other such predetermined
formulas. It is however worth noting
that Emerson later withdrew his
opinion about Naturalistic
Photography being the only valid way
to create art through photography.
Pictorialism and Naturalistic
photography inevitably evolved and
spilled over each other throughout the
history of Portraiture
The function and main goal of Marilyn Monroe by Richard Avedon, 1957
portrait and self-portrait
photography is to tell some kind of
story simply, yet elegantly and the
main components of this style are
staging the perfect pose and
lighting because a portrait can say
so much in such a simple way
Landscape and
Architecture
Landscape
When photography technology first emerged in the 19th century, early
photographers seemed to decide that landscape made the perfect subject
because they were static. So there was no danger of the subject moving
about as they waited for photographs to be exposed.
According to records, the earliest known evidence of a landscape
photograph was taken between the years of 1826 and 1827. It was an
urban landscape photo taken by a French inventor by the name of
Nicephore Niepce. It was noted this first exposure took him a mere 8
hours, so perhaps it made sense for him to choose a still subject. A few
years later, around 1835 an English scientist named Henry Fox Talbot
entered the scene and introduced innovations in photography.
It was quite revolutionary back then because this allowed people a much
faster way of rendering reality into a two-dimensional format that they
were previously only able to do the way of painting. This process took
much longer than taking a photo.

Niepce
By Edward Steichen
Slew of images and portraits were taken and developed during the
victoria era. However, it wasn't until 1904 that landscape photography
made its mark with the help of Edward Steichen and his photograph
called Moonlight : The Pond.
One fascinating thing to note about his artwork was that it isn't a
straight-up photograph but rather a juxtaposition of photo and painting
techniques. Steichen added the black and white photo with the painted
elements in the form of a bluish tone. He also included a moon in the
background. He practised what was called pictorialism, a technique
that photographers used back then to make their works unique from
those amateurs.
At a time when handheld cameras were new and sold at low prices,
everyone had one, and these photographers innovated and managed to
elevate their artform. While some may argue that painting on a photo
isn't at all fair, this still makes for a fascinating point in the history of
landscape photography.
By Ansel Adams Ansel Adams was an ardent
environmentalist who
advocated for the natural
world and inspired people
to show love for the planet
by showing love and
respect. He has produced
some spectacular images of
canyons and rivers which
have become sort of
inspiration point for
photographers to follow.
By Henry Jackson
Peter Henry Emerson was a British photographer and writer who passionately
argued about what the meaning of photography was. His main point was that it
was an art form and not just something to be used for technical or scientific
means. He drew inspiration form naturalistic French paintings and so started
his photography journey by taking images of country life.
Architecture
Architectural Photography is a subject that represents
architecture through the medium of photography. This type of
photography is used for several purposes like documentation of
spaces, advertisements buildings, discovering of what is beyond
our eye, recording of what feels in a space, exhibition one's
experience of space. Architectural Photography is a field where
many architects and photographers have worked on and today in
the age of internet, one can experience any far-off unknown place
through photography only.
J.M.L Daguerre and William in 1839 photographed buildings as
buildings are still, non-living entities and got maximum
exposure time. From this time onwards two types of architectural
photography evolved, Elevation and Perspective. The elevation is
mainly focused on the facade of the building and The Perspective
show the three-dimensional view of the building. In about
1969,Willard Boyle and George Smith at Bell Labs invented a
charged-couple device (CCD) which was a major step towards the
development of digital photography.

object and event
OBJECT
In object photography, everything revolves around
photographing three-dimensional objects and
arrangements. The most common type of object
photography is the so-called table top
photography, in which smaller objects are draped
on a table or shelf.
EVENT
(Event photography is the professional art of
snapping high-quality images during a wide
variety of important occasions, from personal
events like weddings or birthday parties to large
public gatherings like corporate events, galas,
award ceremonies, and music festivals

to photographs that are not

From 1840 to 1860, the main focus of
photography was on developing

possible.
It refers to a photo shoot that
