From the Rabbi’s Study

Also published in the Jewish Voice

April 2016 - Passover

Mar the son of Rabina made a marriage feast for his son. He saw that the Rabbis were growing very
merry, so he brought a precious cup and broke it before them, and they became serious. Rabbi Ashi made a
marriage feast for his son. He saw that the Rabbis were growing very merry, so he brought a cup of white crystal
and broke it before them and they became serious. Even at a wedding a glass is broken to ensure we do not
become overly happy and forget about those who endure pain and anguish (B. Berachot 30b-31a).

How much the more so with regards to Passover?!

Passover is not known as zm an sim chateinu (the Season of our Joy). That designation is reserved for
Sukkot. Instead, Passover is known as zm an cheruteinu (the Season of our Freedom). While we might assume
that the exodus from Egypt, the departure from slavery, would be one of the most joyous moments of our shared
historical narrative, the truth is not so simple. We are taught by our tradition that freedom doesn’t come without
some effort, hardship and even suffering. Freedom comes with a cost.

In the Torah we read: “Moses held out his arm over the sea, and at daybreak the sea returned to its
normal state, and the Egyptians fled at its approach. But the LORD hurled the Egyptians into the sea. […] Thus
the LORD delivered Israel that day from the Egyptians. Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the
sea” (Exodus 14:27-30, excerpted). After hundreds of years of enslavement, watching their former taskmasters
violently crushed by the weight of the sea, the Israelites sang a song to the Holy One. In the Talmud (B. Megillah
10b) there is a tradition that at that moment, the saving of the Israelites led the angels to want to chant hymns of
delight. God, however, silenced them, asking, “How can you sing hymns when my creatures are perishing?” We
learn this in Proverbs as well: “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he
stumbles” (Prov 24:17).

On Passover we are meant to see the story as if we actually lived it. At first, joy may seem the correct
emotion for such a scenario. From slavery to freedom, we do our best to imagine the hardship of the worst
institution the world has ever known. However, we quickly realize that it isn’t joy as much as it is the relief of
freedom and the gratitude that washes over us. That’s because we don’t just tell a story; we try to relive it the best
we can. Despite the negative aspects of the tale that became the d efining essence o f o ur heritage , it is what has
kept us alive for thousands of years. So, as much as we are taught to be thankful and to praise the Holy One for
our freedom, we again and again read from our Torah the most common commandment: “Love the stranger for
you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (I won’t offer a citation, as rabbinic tradition would suggest I’d have to
offer the thirty-six times we read these words in the Torah).

If we rise from the Passover Seder the same people we were when we sat down, we have fundamentally
failed. If, however, we rise with a deeper understanding of the pain and suffering of others, if we rise finding it a
little easier to put ourselves in the shoes of those less fortunate, if we rise with gratitude for our own freedom and
those who made the ultimate sacrifice to make it so, if we rise with a heavy weight on our shoulders commanding
us to see to the freedom of others, even those profoundly different from us, then perhaps we will have succeeded.

As powerful, as meaningful, as joyous as Passover sometimes seems, we must never forget that freedom
always comes at a cost. May this annual reminder of our responsibilities for the freedom of all people inspire us to
know that our tradition commands us to be prepared at any moment to pay that price.

Mount Sinai Cemetery Upgrades

Our cemetery has had a face-lift! The next time you visit, be
prepared for a “wow” factor.

 The path through the cemetery has been paved.
 8 handicapped parking spots have been added.
 The southwest corner of the cemetery has been extended

with curbing, adding 90 new plots; grass seeding is in pro-
gress.
 The parking lot has been cleaned up: grass has been removed, low spots have been lev-
eled out, gravel and screening have been added.

A lot of the materials (gravel, screening, top soil, etc.) was donated by
Tony and Julie Mullen. We would like to
thank them for their generosity in mak-
ing this project possible. Our cemetery
committee has done a fabulous job!

Look for more improvements at the cem-
etery in the coming months!

Everyone is Welcome!

We realize it may be hard to ask, but PLEASE remember that if special arrangements are ever needed in order
for you to afford an event at Temple, it need not be hard at all! Sally has a way of working wonders and all it
takes is a confidential phone call to her. Your presence is important to us and we will make it happen!

If transportation is a concern, don’t forget that the Shalom Shuttle is available through the Jewish Federation
of El Paso. This program is intended to help older members in the community attend events offered by our
local Jewish organizations. Just call the Federation Office at 915-842-9554 and ask for Buddy
Schwartz. Advance reservations are needed, so don’t delay!

WRJ/Sisterhood

Please join us for a special membership luncheon on Thursday, April 14, at noon, at
Temple Mount Sinai. Our guest speakers will be Jacque Spier and Susan Schwartz. Lunch will
be provided, so please RSVP by April 8.

On May 15, Sisterhood will again help with the decorations for Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israeli
Independence Day, and we need volunteers to create decorations, and to help set up and take
down. Please let Wendy know if you can help as soon as possible.

Sisterhood needs volunteers for president or co-presidents. We also need someone to
create the emails and bulletin articles on behalf of Sisterhood. Without new officers, our group
will be in jeopardy of a hiatus next year. For more information and questions, contact Wendy
Axelrod @ 833-5779 or waxelrod@att.net.

Letter from the President

Dear Temple Family,

If ever I were for a loss for words, it would be after experiencing our
fundraiser event on March 16. (But, I’ll try!) To say that this event
was a success is putting it mildly. Thanks to YOU, this event brought
in more than just money: it brought us together as a congregation and
an El Paso Jewish community; it was an entertaining performance like we’ve never seen before;
it created a sense of pride and teamwork for so many who helped in the preparations; it was
fun; the food was delicious; we saw what fantastic merchandise our Gift Shop has to offer and
what incredible artistic talent we have within our membership; we have an even greater appre-
ciation for Jewish music (and our very own Carlos after his awesome performance!); AND, we
profited over $20,000 to help support the programs and projects at Temple. It far exceeded our
goals and expectations – I wish I had the words to convey my sincere appreciation to everyone
who contributed to this overwhelming success; THANK YOU will have to suffice!

So many wonderful things are happening at Temple that it’s hard to point them all out. One of
the most exciting, however, is the addition of Sam Griswold to our staff as our new Member-
ship Outreach and Programming Coordinator. Sam will be joining us officially on Monday,
April 18…just in time for you to meet him at our Annual Meeting on April 19! I know you will
join me in welcoming Sam, Donna and Sean to El Paso and, especially, to Temple.

Speaking of the Annual Meeting, please plan on attending this special meeting on Tuesday,
April 19 at 6:00 p.m. in Schwartz Hall. In addition to getting to meet Sam, we will be presenting
the annual reports of Temple, Perpetual Care and the Foundation Trust, nominating a new slate
of officers and trustees, and voting on some important bylaw amendments. I look forward to
seeing you there!

Lastly, I want to publicly thank our wonderful Rabbi Zeidman for being wonderful; our super-
fantastic staff - Sally, Grace, Stacy, Elisa, Frank, Carlos, Linda, Flor, Ramona, religious school
teachers and madrachim for being super-fantastic; and our amazing Sh’lichim - Ed, Ellen and
Tina -- for being amazing! I am in awe and so appreciative for what they do each and every day
to make our experience at Temple special and meaningful.

Fondly,

Lori Gaman, Temple President

Pre-Purim Family Event - March 20, 2016

Families, students and faculty met in Krupp Chapel at 9:30am for
Tefilah (short Service) led by Rabbi and accompanied by Carlos.
Right after Tefilah, everyone walked down to the Religious School
courtyard for the Pre-Purim celebration.

Families had the choice of selecting from the following activities,
games and crafts:

Grogger Making, Face Painting, Freedom Toss, Shaving
Haman’s Head, Giving Haman A Kind Heart, Cupcake Walk, Mask Painting, Shushan-Persia 7 Days
Toss, Purim Characters Chalk Drawing Contest and Hamentashen Making session

Everyone enjoyed food from the “Kingdom of Pur-ti Yummy
Snacks”! Items offered at this Kingdom of very healthy foods were:
Nachos, Slushy’s, Churros, Popcorn, and Corn in a Cup.

In the “Purim Feast Room”,
you could eat till you burst.
Available foods offered in
this feast were grilled
hotdogs, tossed salad, tuna
salad, egg salad, PB&J sandwiches, hummus, potato chips, and trays
of fruit. The rooms were decorated in bright and happy colored masks,
streamers and balloons.

The response and feedback during and after the program was exceptional. We even had compliments from
some of the children.

These events require lots of planning, preparing, set-up, execution and cleanup. We are very fortunate to have
an awesome faculty who facilitated all of the activities, games, and food stations and a President (Lori Gaman)
who worked very hard and really enjoyed facilitating the
Hamantashen-making session, with Shana and Sara assisting.
Words cannot express how much we appreciate all of the hard
work from those who volunteer to help before, during and after
the event. When you see one of these wonderful individuals you
will know that they give of their time and energy to support our

school.

They are Lori Gaman,
MaryAnn Plaut,
Cynthia Bass, Nathan Stevens, Mike and Rebecca Feigenblatt, Leti
Stevens, Shana Levin, Stacy Berry, Katie Zeidman, The Farleys,
Sylvia Krapin, Sally Parke, Ophra Whalen, Jennifer and Julia Pratt,
Ashley Kilday, Ryan Miner and the Hernandez family.

Jewish Federation Community-Wide Mitzvah Day

Volunteer opportunities as part of the Global Good Deeds Day on April 10

On April 10, the Jewish Community of Greater El Paso including the American side of the Borderplex Alli-
ance, will have the opportunity to participate in a Global initiative for volunteerism promoting Social Justice
and Environmental Awareness. The local initiative is organized by the Community Relations Council of the
Jewish Federation, and we hope it is just the first of many to come.

This year we are offering opportunities in 4 projects, and we hope to expand the program in years to come.
This year’s projects are:

Frontera Land Alliance

Volunteers will be cleaning a segment of Resler Canyon. All age volunteers are welcome, but minors need to
be accompanied by supervising adults. The project will run from 2 pm to 4 pm. It is recommended that vol-
unteers bring hats, gloves and sunscreen and wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts and closed shoes or boots.
(If you do not have gloves, gloves will be provided)

Jardin de los Milagros

Volunteers will be helping at a local farm that provides vegetables and fruits to local pantries and families in
need. Tasks may include seeding for this year’s crop. Volunteers ages 3 and over are welcome, but minors
under 12 need to be supervised by adults, 1 adult for every five children. The project will run from 1 pm to 5
pm. It is recommended that volunteers bring hats, gloves and sunscreen and wear long pants, long-sleeve
shirts and closed shoes or boots.

Habitat for Humanity

Volunteers will be joining others in ongoing Habitat projects. Tasks may include framing and/or painting
and/or roofing. Volunteers must be over 18 years old. Approximate timeframe for the project will be 1 pm to
5 pm. It is recommended that volunteers bring hats, gloves and sunscreen and wear long pants, long sleeve
shirts and closed shoes or boots. More information on this project will be forthcoming.

El Paso Villa Maria

El Paso Villa Maria is a temporary home where women and the homeless heal to wholeness. Volunteers will
be preparing and serving lunch. Volunteers must be over 16 years old. The project will run from 11 am to 3
pm. More information on this project will be forthcoming.

Community participants will receive free t-shirts identifying our group and our participation in the Global
Good Deeds Day. We have a limited number of t-shirts, and they will be given away on a first registered
basis.

At the end of the volunteer day, we will come together at Congregation B’nai Zion for a light dinner to share
our experiences and to meet other volunteers and celebrate the day. This is a great opportunity for all of us
to participate as a Jewish Community volunteering in the greater community in the El Paso-Las Cruces area.
To register, you can call the Federation office at (915) 842-9554, or complete the registration form on our
website at http://www.jewishelpaso.org .

Join us for a day of doing Mitzvot while having fun with old friends and making new ones!
