Modern Manners
Backpacks holdalls, call them what you will, they’re all “man bags” and
you can’t help filling them with stuff according to David Dunnico

In Alfred Hitchcock’s film North By
Northwest, Cary Grant gets chased
across America carrying nothing
more than a comb and a pair of Ray
Bans, and at the end looks as

immaculately groomed as at the beginning.

Things were simpler then, all a chap’s

accoutrements wouldn’t crease a well-

tailored pocket. Today, I take more kit on a

bus ride than took Scott to the Pole. So

that much derided piece of kit, the “man

necessity that I’ve had to get another

wardrobe just to store all my bags in.

These are most definitely not male

some could be called branded baggage,

but even these can be categorised as

“shoulder bags”, “rucksacks”, “holdalls”.

They even have names. “Would you pass

me my Billingham?” “The Camelback, if

you please”. “Have you seen my (fake)

Louis Vuitton?” (I made that last one up).

There’s one of those big blue IKEA bags

in the kitchen, it’s full of plastic shopping

there. I don’t recall why I bought a bright

Natural defence

Now is the time to boost your immune system advises nutritionist
Kathryn Johnson of Raw Appetite

As the seasons change the
incidence of common bugs
and ailments rise. If you want
to be able to withstand them,
my message to you this month
is to feed your gut.

Keeping your gut happy not only makes
you less vulnerable to everyday sicknesses,
it often goes hand-in-hand with less
bloating and constipation, reduced stress,
better moods and clearer skin. That’s a lot
of benefits.

Swallowing a few manufactured
probiotic substances won’t do you much
harm but it’s expensive and rather like
randomly scattering seeds: which may or
may not be effective, depending upon any
existing condition. As any good gardener
knows, the difference comes with paying
equal attention to the soil as the seeds. For
your gut, this means to steadily increase
your consumption of naturally fermented
foods, of which there are many types. You
can achieve a lot by starting with
sauerkraut and biologically active drinks -
like these two recipes for making your
own.

DID YOU KNOW?

Almost 85% of your
immunity lies in the
beneficial bacteria that lives
in your gut walls. For a
robust constitution it makes
sense to cultivate healthy

gut flora

Most long-lived cultures in
the world have a tradition
of eating fermented foods. It
not only preserves food, it
also protects our health.
