Project GRAD Akron - Our 19th Year!
Since September 2002, Project GRAD Akron has successfully partnered with the Akron Public Schools to positively
impact the lives of students and families. In the fall of 2002, we began our journey with six schools in the Buchtel
Cluster. In 2017-18, we piloted an expansion of services to North High School. During the 2018-19 school year, we
expanded our services to the East Community Learning Center. Currently, we are providing programming and
services primarily to students in the Buchtel and East Clusters of the Akron Public Schools. During the summer of
2021, we began offering selected services and programs (Bridge to Kindergarten, FAFSA, and ACT support) to students
attending schools in additional clusters. In late September, 2021, the United States Department of Education
awarded a GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) partnership grant to
the Akron Public Schools (APS). Working with the District, Project GRAD Akron co-authored the grant and will serve
as the lead partner. The GEAR UP grant will provide us the opportunity to provide expand our reach to students
beginning in the 6th and 7th grades at designated schools and follow these students for the next seven years.
The heart of the work that we do is showing the students the pathways to a successful life. We help students make
positive transitions through programs including our Bridge to Kindergarten program in collaboration with Kent State
University; the Kids2College program; our College and Career Central classes; our Summer Institutes in collaboration
with the University of Akron; our GRAD Mentors program; our GRAD Helping Hub; our scholarships; and our GRAD
Persists programs for our college students. Since 2006, we have awarded over $2.0 million in scholarships to
graduates of the Akron Public Schools!
Thank you your support as we invest in the lives of the young people we serve in the Akron Public Schools. Your
contribution will make a positive difference in their lives; giving us the opportunity to fulfill our mission of providing
services for underrepresented students to achieve success from kindergarten through college!
Vision, Mission, and Core Values
Vision: We see a world of hope – where there are no limits on potential, the greatness in every child
is inspired and celebrated, and dreams are realized through opportunities and education. As such,
Project GRAD Akron will become one of the foremost enablers of underrepresented student success
through unique and innovative programs (PG Knoxville).
Mission: In collaboration with community partners, Project GRAD Akron will provide a system
of programs, supports, and scholarships for underrepresented students to achieve success from
kindergarten through career.
Core Values: Mutual Respect; Honesty & Integrity; Teamwork & Collaboration; Passion
Thank You!
Project GRAD Akron is grateful to the significant support we receive from the Akron Public Schools,
foundations, businesses, and individuals. Since 2007, Project GRAD Akron has hosted a signature
fundraising event, Achieving Dreams Celebration, to raise funds for programs, services, and scholarships.

Remarks from the Event Chairpersons
Welcome!
We are delighted and honored that you have joined us this evening for Project GRAD Akron’s 15th Annual Achieving
Dreams Celebration Gala. We thought we would be having this 15th Gala in person but instead we are having our
SECOND VIRTUAL GALA.
Tonight, we will be celebrating community achievements by two individuals and one organization. We will be
sharing stories from students past and present who have been involved with Project GRAD Akron over the years. You
will hear Joshua Porter, one of our past students, tickle the ivories. WKYC-TV’s newscaster and Project GRAD Akron
volunteer Leon Bibb will join us again as our emcee for the evening and the amazing Al Roker, weather and feature
anchor of NBC News’ TODAY and co-host of the 3rd Hour of TODAY, will be our guest speaker. Of course, melded into
this evening will be our virtual auction that has something for everyone’s taste.
For the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges for all of us. The mission of Project
GRAD Akron continues to be as important today as it was 19 years ago when Project GRAD Akron began. The
dedication of staff, volunteer, and community members has lifted us up time and time again. You have embraced
our vision and what it means for students of the Akron Public Schools. Today, more than ever, the efforts of this
organization remain vibrant and meaningful because of YOU!
A special thank you is extended the members of our committee for all of your efforts. Due to the changing world
we live in, we appreciate your willingness to serve and to do whatever was necessary to make this event successful.
Thank you to our sponsors, donors, ticket purchasers, and everyone who played a role in tonight’s success.
Finally, a huge thank you is extended to Roger and Sally Read for your gracious generosity for the 15th anniversary
challenge match! Thank you for believing in Project GRAD Akron and our mission!
Again, we extend our deepest and sincerest thanks to everyone for joining us tonight and for your continued support
of Project GRAD Akron.

Remarks from the Executive Director –
Jacqueline A. Silas-Butler, Esq.
15 Achieving Dreams Celebrations! I can still remember as the relatively new Executive
Director of Project GRAD Akron and we needed to have a fundraiser. It was in 2007 and I
had only been in my position for less than a year. My first year was pretty hectic. Prior to
my beginning as the Executive Director in 2006, Project GRAD USA informed all of it sites
throughout the United States that they had received notification that the federal funds
would no longer be available. My first year, we relied on grants and donations. But, we
quickly realized that we needed to seek additional ways to bring in revenue to support our
mission. It was decided that we would have a major fundraiser.
Since GRAD is an acronym and stands for Graduation Really Achieves Dreams, the
“Achieving Dreams Celebration” was created. We held our first Achieving Dreams
Celebration on a Thursday night at Tangier. We gave our first awards, recognizing the
Project GRAD
Akron Parent,
Volunteer, Teacher,
and Administrator of the Year! Since it was
our first, we needed to have a great speaker
who would be a draw. At that time, PGA’s
scholarship coordinator was Brian Turner, a
Buchtel graduate. He suggested his longtime
friend, also a Buchtel graduate, to serve as our
keynote speaker. Brian reached out to Leon
Harris, who had been an anchor with CNN. Leon
agreed to be our 1st speaker and he donated his
honorarium to establish the Project GRAD Akron
Leon Harris Scholarships.
As we were preparing for the 15th anniversary of
this event, I decided to take a walk down memory
lane and look back at many of the photos, souvenir
program books, invitations, and videos. I had
the opportunity to see the faces of many of our
students, honorees, long-time supporters, staff,
committee members, and volunteers. We have
changed the event in so many ways: from adding
an auction; videotaping the honorees; changing
our locations; changing our program format;
having keynote speakers to not having speakers;
providing a sit-down dinner, buffet dinner,
reception only, and curbside meals to go; and for
the last two years, from in-person to virtual. The
one constant has been so many caring people
who invest in the lives of our students by helping
Project GRAD Akron raise funds to support our mission, programs,
services, and scholarship fund!
As we look forward to tonight’s event, I can’t help but think about
the one similarity from the 1st event. We had a nationally recognized
news anchor with our 1st (Leon Harris) and now we have another
nationally recognized news anchor with our 15th (Al Roker). Both
have ties to northeast Ohio and both are committed to improving
the lives of others.
Another thing that I noticed when I looked at the pictures was
how many people have been with us from the very beginning
and they have continued their support over the years. Tonight, I
will highlight two people: The first is former PGA Board member
and Development committee Chairperson, Theresa Carter, the
President and CEO of Synthomer Foundation (fka OMNOVA
Solutions Foundation). Theresa served as our 1st chairperson and
she listened to my many, many “suggestions”. She continues to
be a strong advocate for Project GRAD Akron and she continues
to listen to my many, many suggestions! Thank you Theresa for
being with us from the beginning and for all of your support. The
second person is Laurie Curfman, Project GRAD Akron’s Director
of Programs. Laurie was with Project GRAD Akron before I started
and she has continued to use her strong organizational skills
to support our students, interns, staff, and volunteers. Laurie,
thank you for your years of dedicated service and compassionate
leadership for Project GRAD Akron!
Tonight, we wanted to highlight some of our students and let
them share in their own words about Project GRAD Akron. Over
the years, you have had the opportunity to hear from many of
our students. They speak from their hearts and can tell about
Project GRAD Akron’s impact better than anyone else. Since
the event is virtual, we had to really narrow the number of
speakers. We choose students from different walks of life and in
different places in their journeys. We hope that you will enjoy our
“Reflections of Our Success.”
Please join me in thanking Roger and Sally Read for their
generous donation to Project GRAD Akron! They have graciously
and generously agreed to celebrate our 15th Annual gala with a
$15,000 dollar-for-dollar match of donations we receive for this
event! Words cannot adequately convey my sincere appreciation!
We know that their generosity is appreciated by the many donors
listed in the program, the notes and calls we have received, as
well as the many others who indicated that they will be making
donations tonight at the Gala. We have already received many
new donations and/or increased donations based upon their
generosity! Thank you for your many, many years of support!
In closing, a special thank you is extended to Project GRAD
Akron’s staff members, who give so much of themselves to enrich
the lives of our students. You are amazing and truly appreciated.
Thank you to Project GRAD Akron’s Board of Directors. You
give me the freedom to be creative, innovative, and allow us to
do whatever is necessary to get the job done! I thank you for
your support! To all of the Akron Public Schools staff members,
teachers, administrators, and Board members, thank you for
doing what is best for students! It is paying dividends! To all of
our volunteers, interns, mentors, donors, partners, community
leaders, elected officials, and other stakeholders, thank you for
your many, many years of support! It has made a difference!
Finally, to our students and their families, thank you for taking the
necessary steps to be the difference makers in our schools, our
community, and in your own lives! We truly care about you and
want the absolute best for you! Together, we are making positive
changes that will impact generations
On behalf of Project GRAD Akron, I thank everyone for believing
in our mission, our students, our families, and the work that we
do! God’s continued blessings on each of your lives! Take care
and be safe! GRAD: Graduation Really Achieves Dreams!

Meet Our Entertainer
Joshua Porter Project GRAD Akron 2013 Scholar
Joshua Porter is a professional keyboardist, producer, and music director
hailing from Akron, Ohio, USA. Coming from a very musical family, he was
exposed to various instruments and musical styles at an early age. However,
being the son of a gospel songstress and choir director, he naturally gravi-
tated toward the rhythmic and soulful musical styles of the Black Church.
At the age of 15, he landed his first job as the pianist and organist for St. Paul
Missionary Baptist Church, rising to the position of Music Director by the age
of 17. After graduating from Buchtel High School in 2013, Joshua went on to
earn his Bachelor’s degree in Piano and Jazz Studies at Clark Atlanta Univer-
sity, followed by a Master’s degree in Global Entertainment & Music Business
from Berklee College of Music – Valencia. Throughout his undergraduate and
graduate years of study, Josh gained countless hours of experience working
for artists as a music producer, live show programmer, music director, and
session keyboardist. These experiences allowed him to venture away from
the familiar church genres into other, contrasting genres that gave him a
well-rounded and diverse musical experience. He is currently residing back
in his home town, where he serves as the Pastor of Worship at Mount Calvary
Baptist Church.

William R. Ellis, Jr. & The Reporter
2021 Community Service Honoree
William R. Ellis, Jr. is the Editor/Publisher of The Reporter newspaper. A native of
Springfield, Ohio, Bill graduated from Youngstown South High and received his Bachelor of
Arts degree in Political Science and History from Youngstown State University. He married
his college sweetheart Florida Ellis and they moved to Akron to raise their family. He began
working at The Reporter in 1974, becoming Editor/Publisher in 2000.
Bill has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to community service. A Boy Scouts of
America (BSA) Eagle Scout, he served as a BSA presidential honor guard at President
Richard Nixon’s 1968 Inauguration. He mentored hundreds of young men in Portage and
Mahoning Counties as Scoutmaster and retired as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop #33 at St.
Andrew’s AME Church in Youngstown. One of the most memorable moments in Bill’s career
was earning the Great Trail (Akron) Boy Scout Council’s Whitney Young Award. In addition
to scouting, he served as the aquatic director at the Youngstown West Federal Street YMCA
training many youths to swim and preparing many lifeguards.
Bill is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Phoenix Lodge #112 – PHA, Past High Priest
of Zerubbabel Chapter #40 Royal Arch Masons, Black Professionals of Cleveland (BPA), 100
Black Men of Greater Akron, Copley Road Merchants Association in Akron, and Ohio NAACP
Conference of Branches. He has partnered with the Akron and Barberton NAACP, Sisters
With a Vision Breast Cancer Walk, and the 21st Congressional Caucus.
Bill was elected as Midwest Region Three representative on the National Newspaper
Publishers Association Board (NNPA), and NNPA Foundation Board. He was president of the
Cleveland Minority Publishers’ Association and national volunteer sales representative for
Black Media, Inc. – a coalition of national weekly black newspapers.
He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his community service and leadership. In 2009, the Broadcasters Hall of Fame
(BHOF) began to honor individuals in the print media industry who have made significant contributions as a publisher, editor, or writer.
He was the first newspaper journalist to receive BHOF induction.
The Summit Board of Developmental Disabilities recognized Bill for his informative messages through print media by awarding him the
“2012 Ohio Public Images Award of Merit.” Kent State University honored him as a pillar of the Black Press and journalism education with
the Robert G. McGruder Appreciation Award in 2013.
He has received community service awards from the Zeta Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., 100 Black of Greater
Akron (2019), Xi Chi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (2020), and was inducted in the National Volunteers of Northeast Ohio
Hall of Fame (2021).
Bill is the widowed father of two daughters, grandfather of four, and has one great grandson.
The Reporter
The second generation publishing company was started by the late Rev. Atty. William R. Ellis in 1968. William Ellis Jr. “Bill” and his brother,
Carlton Ellis, continue the superior progress of this family-oriented African American weekly newspaper serving 20,000 readers in
Summit, Stark, and Cuyahoga counties. The Reporter, Akron’s third African American newspaper, is Akron/Canton’s oldest continuously
published weekly newspaper. The Reporter has more than five decades of providing journalism to the community.
Mr. Ellis believes it is The Reporter’s mission to provide an informative independent publication which depicts African-Americans
in a positive way, not always focusing on negative images. “We have encouraged community partnerships and inter-organizational
cooperation,” he said – a policy developed by The Assault on Illiteracy Program where he participated on the National and Cleveland
AOIP Boards. AOIP was a community coalition to fight adult illiteracy and all its ill. “We have the power to solve many of the ills of our
community if we combine our individual success into community strengths to help people and build better communities.”
The Reporter is now digitalized through the Ohio Historical Society and archives are located at the Akron-Summit County Library. To
date, the Reporter is the only African-American weekly newspaper fully digitalized through the Ohio Historical Society.

BRIDGE TO KINDERGARTEN
(B2K) HIGHLIGHTS
Wrapping up Bridge to Kindergarten 2020 – 2021 with
Bridge to First Grade:
As our virtual school year (2020 – 2021) program was winding down,
parents began asking if we would continue the Bridge to Kindergarten
Virtual Club (B2K Club) meetings through the summer to help prepare
the students for 1st grade. Parents collectively shared that B2K has
been a consistent part of their week for the last year and their students
looked forward to the learning activities because B2K made learning
fun. To support continued learning for students, Bridge to First Grade
Club was created and began in June for 8 weeks over the summer.
Bridge to First Grade Club had weekly themed club meetings, such as
“Camping”, “At the Beach”, “All About Me”, and “Campfire Cooking”,
with academic, craft, and movement activities focused on literacy,
math, and social emotional learning. Also, the parent and student had
a weekly engagement activity to complete on their own and show &
tell at the next club meeting. This activity reinforced the parent as first
teacher, provided parent-child together time, and also resulted in a tangible accomplishment each week. The
culminating week, everyone gathered virtually in their kitchens with all of the ingredients we provided to make
S’mores. With chef hats and aprons, children and parents followed visual instructions to complete and eat indoor
S’mores. There was fun had by all!
2021 – 2022 Bridge to Kindergarten Summer Academy
Since 2009, 462 students have successfully transitioned to an Akron Public
Schools kindergarten classroom after completing Project GRAD Akron’s
Bridge to Kindergarten Summer Academy. Since its inception, this
program has continued to partner with Akron Public Schools and Kent
State University’s Early Childhood Education
Department. The 2021 – 2022 program
began with the Bridge to Kindergarten
Summer Academy, which was held in person
this year. At the request of the district, we
expanded our four week program to two
additional hub schools. The B2K Summer
Academy was held at Helen Arnold CLC (Buchtel Cluster), Resnik CLC (Firestone
Cluster), Robinson CLC (East Cluster), and Windemere CLC (Ellet Cluster) for a total of
60 students. Students worked on strengthening their kindergarten readiness skills in
literacy, math, social emotional learning, and school transitions.
Parents and Caregivers also were engaged in the program through Parents as
Partners. Weekly parent/caregiver meetings provided community and school
connections and resources, and an opportunity for parent to parent support. This year
we were excited to add Summit Education Initiative’s Key Steps to Reading Success to
support reading at home. This program provided 8 books and multiple supportive activities for families.
Our program will continue during the school year with programming and wrap-around services for parents,
caregivers, and students to ensure our families and students have their needs met through evidence based
programming and services for a successful start to their beginning journey in their formal education.
Thank you to Akron Public Schools, United Way of Summit and Medina, and The Akron Community Foundation for
your continued generous support of Bridge to Kindergarten.
HIGHLIGHTING
PROJECT GRAD AKRON’S SECONDARY
PROGRAMS
College and Career Central (3C) is our comprehensive classroom program
which prepares students for a successful future. The program provides
students with the information, knowledge, resources, & skills to be READY
for life after high school graduation with a plan in place – whether the plan
is to ENROLL in college (four year, two year, or technical school), ENLIST in
the Armed Services, or move directly to EMPLOYMENT in the work world.
Supplementing the curriculum for seniors is our GRAD Mentors! Program,
matching students with a community volunteer mentor. Our mentors
provide their mentees with support to work on developing their individual
plan for life after high school graduation.
Our 3C program curriculum design is
aligned with The Common Core
Standards and The American School
Counselor Association’s (ASCA’s)
national Mindsets & Behaviors for

Project GRAD Akron’s Additional Scholarships
Leon Harris Book Scholarships
The Leon Harris Book Scholarship was established in 2008. Mr. Harris, a
Buchtel graduate, was the keynote speaker for the First Achieving Dreams
Celebration Gala. He donated $10,000 to fund the Project GRAD Akron
Leon Harris Book Scholarships.
Atha & Muriel Walker Scholarship
The Atha & Muriel Walker Scholarship was established independently
in 1997 for the benefit of Buchtel graduating seniors. In 2011, the family
began awarding scholarships through Project GRAD Akron for Buchtel
High School seniors. For decades, the late Mr. and Mrs. Walker were local
leaders who were active in many community projects. Mr. Walker made a
mission of helping raise funds for Buchtel projects through his association
with the service group Frontiers International. He also assisted high school
and college students with job placement. The Walkers’ five children are all
graduates of Buchtel High School and they have all earned college degrees.
The India Ola Douglas Memorial Book Scholarship
India Ola Douglas was a 2013 graduate of Buchtel CLC (High School) in
Akron Public Schools. Active in school, she was a member of Project
GRAD Akron. India was committed to pursuing her post-secondary
education and she took classes at The University of Akron and Regency
Beauty School. A hard worker, she was employed by JC Penney and
as a consultant for Avon. Her ultimate goal was the pursue a career
in fashion design. On May 6, 2015, India had just left home to attend
classes. At 8:30am, while sitting in her car a red light, she and other cars
were struck by a driver going twice the speed limit. On May 11, India
tragically died as a result of injuries she sustained. The driver was later
convicted of multiple offenses and sentenced to prison.
The India Ola Douglas Memorial Book Scholarship was established in
2016 by India’s family and friends. The scholarship was the brainchild
of India’s brother, Donte Douglas, a 2008 Project GRAD Akron Scholar,
2008 Buchtel graduate, and a 2013 graduate of Muskingum College. He
wants other students to “chase their dreams” as his sister was doing.
