… is nothing if not colourful 1970s The Isle of Wight County Council acquired the
Embankment Road and the collection of tolls ceased
- further residential development was planned near
Dustbin Corner on shingle from the channel which
was to be dredged to a depth of 6 ft and a width of
150 ft with the involvement of Anglo firm Land Salvage
(Cunis Delta-Bouw). Bembridge Marina was built
and the Spithead Hotel was closed in 1976. Wade's
pontoons/marina was put in by the private owner of
Wades Boatyard (now Bembridge Boatyard). Attrill's
Ferry continued to operate across the harbour and
Harbourmaster Charles Selwyn was still seen in the
Harbour Launch.

1980s – The harbour froze again, H J Bennett set up their
current yard on the Point. Greylands College operated
from the Spithead Hotel which was demolished in 1989
by H & B Plant. The Illusion class yachts started sailing in
Bembridge Harbour.

However, perhaps the most significant owner from the
Harbour development point of view was Zanen Verstoep
a Dutch owned dredging company who excavated the
main channel through the Harbour, created Fisherman’s
pontoons, improved the Marina and did much work in
the approaches during the 80s. More big development
was planned this time around the Point area, again it
didn't happen. Many boats came to grief during the 1987
hurricane.

In the late 90s the Spithead hotel site was redeveloped
with 27 houses ‘Solent Landing’, the Bembridge Sailing
Club substantially rebuilt and extended their club house
with a 100 seater dining room. In the early 2000's the
Visitors marina on the Duver was linked up as a 'walk
ashore' and some of the Harbour Strand and Port St
Helens houses were extended 'up' another floor.

The New Year of 2012 saw another change of ownership
of Bembridge Harbour once again taking the company
'out of Administration', to date the Duver Marina has
been dredged and extended for visiting yachts and the
'unsafe' Fisherman's pontoon replaced. 2013 marks 50
years of BHIC, the ‘private’ ownership of Bembridge
Harbour. The current owners, local residents and
visitors are going to be celebrating this over the
weekend of 26 – 28 July 2013.

Baywatch on the Beach

A delightful Seafood Restaurant

A warm welcome awaits at the Baywatch, famous licensed Seafood
Restaurant, Shop and Beach Café.
Situated on the water’s edge to starboard as you pass buoy number 6A in
the approach channel to Bembridge Harbour, just a 5-minute walk from the
harbourmaster’s office at the marina (walk across the sand dunes to the
waterfront and along past the beach huts until you reach the Baywatch).
Open every day and most evenings from early March to early November
with a friendly relaxed atmosphere and the choice of tables both inside
and out. It is usually essential to make a reservation for dinner.

The Baywatch is unique in offering one of the finest views of the
Eastern Solent. The view constantly changes and there is always
something interesting to watch, from majestic cruise ships such
as the Queen Mary 2 and Oriana leaving on the tide for far flung
exotic places to the myriad of small craft entering and leaving
Bembridge Harbour or even our local fishermen bringing home
the ‘catch of the day’ to be served at the Baywatch the same
evening.
Enjoy breakfast, lunch, a fine dinner or just a coffee, bottle of
wine or glass of beer and watch the maritime world go by.
We specialise in fresh seafood – local crab, lobster, sea bass and
our famous signature dish - Moules Mariniers. We also offer a
daily specials board together with a selection of steak, pasta,
meat, and vegetarian dishes.
