Bembridge & St Helens Guide 2012
Welcome to the 2012 edition of the Bembridge & St Helens Guide
As your Chairman may I extend a warm welcome to all Bembridge and St Helens
Residents and Visitors.
The first guide produced by the Bembridge Business Association was in 1998 (BBA
was formed in 1997) and at that time we had only 57 members. Today, 14 years on,
we have over 120 members in both Bembridge and St Helens and a thriving business
community.
It is of interest to note that of those businesses that advertised with us in 1998 some 31 have moved
on making a turnover of only 2 businesses per year which would indicate to me a certain stability to
Bembridge and St Helens businesses. Even so, this has been a challenging year for all. However we
look forward to better things for next year.
It is easy for those of us who live here to take for granted the beautiful surroundings we live in such
as the Harbour, the Beaches, Culver Down, the Windmill to name but a few. As well as these the
wide range of shops, services and goods provided in the village are, in my opinion, second to none.
We should also be proud of how our village is kept and winning the prestigious ‘Best Kept Village’
Award.
For those of you visiting, again we are able to provide you with a good
selection of restaurants, cafés, pubs, hotels, a variety of types of self catering
accommodation and places of interest to visit. This guide is here to help you
find your way around the village and all its services and attractions.
If you are local it is here to help you find our numerous businesses, services
and attractions.

Bembridge Parish Council
Bembridge is like a Russian doll, an
island within an island and probably
because of this has developed
into a ‘complete’ community with
a thriving range of shops, facilities
and services that many a small town
would envy. The natural beauty,
harbour, beaches, attractions and
facilities of the Bembridge area make
it a popular place with summer
visitors, yet it does not become a
ghost-town in the winter as the
community remains active and
vibrant year round.
The community retains much that is
good about village life, with a wide
range of local sports, recreational
and voluntary activities relatively
well supported and where people ‘look out’ for neighbours. It is also a good place to bring up
children within a safe, healthy environment and a highly graded village primary school.
The Parish Council has recently had a significant change of councillors and key staff and the new
team are anxious to gain the respect of their community by establishing good relations across the
village. We are seeking to under-pin all that is good within the village by promoting community life
and providing essential local facilities and services. Examples of our efforts include countering the
Isle of Wight Council’s closure of public toilets, library and tourist information facilities across the
Island by: purchasing the village toilets premises and making arrangements
not just to keep them open all year (previously summer only), but putting
plans in place to improve and upgrade them; giving essential financial
support to volunteer group providing the community library service and
providing a local information service from our parish office for locals and
visitors.
We consider ourselves fortunate to live in the wonderful village of
Bembridge.

Baywatch on the Beach
A delightful Seafood Restaurant
A warm welcome awaits at the Baywatch, famous licensed Seafood
Restaurant, Shop and Beach Café.
Situated on the water’s edge to starboard as you pass buoy number 6A in
the approach channel to Bembridge Harbour, just a 5-minute walk from the
harbourmaster’s office at the marina (walk across the sand dunes to the
waterfront and along past the beach huts until you reach the Baywatch).
Open every day and most evenings from early March to early November
with a friendly relaxed atmosphere and the choice of tables both inside
and out. It is usually essential to make a reservation for dinner.
Ph6oto - B Langford
The Baywatch is unique in offering one of the finest views of the
Eastern Solent. The view constantly changes and there is always
something interesting to watch, from majestic cruise ships such
as the Queen Mary 2 and Oriana leaving on the tide for far flung
exotic places to the myriad of small craft entering and leaving
Bembridge Harbour or even our local fishermen bringing home
the ‘catch of the day’ to be served at the Baywatch the same
evening.
Enjoy breakfast, lunch, a fine dinner or just a coffee, bottle of
wine or glass of beer and watch the maritime world go by.
We specialise in fresh seafood – local crab, lobster, sea bass and
our famous signature dish - Moules Mariniers. We also offer a
daily specials board together with a selection of steak, pasta,
meat, and vegetarian dishes.
Opening times vary according to season and weather. We are a
family business so please check daily times.

Bembridge Airport
An important part of the Island’s Aviation Heritage by Bob Wealthy
The Isle of Wight has played a
major part in the development
of aviation from the early part of
the last century.
Aircraft departments were A classic de Havilland Dragon Rapide returns from a local
introduced during the First World pleasure flight in the 1980s
War by J.S. Whites the shipbuilders
as Wight Aircraft, and by S.E.
Saunders Ltd, later to become
Saunders-Roe. Bembridge played
its part in World War I when the
RNAS established a seaplane base in
Bembridge Harbour and the RFC set
up a landplane base on Forelands
fields to operate anti-submarine
patrols.
After World War I a number of local gentry approached the owner of Bembridge Farm, Mr. E.U. Taylor,
with a view to providing land for a private airfield. Mr. Taylor himself being interested in aviation
agreed to establish a new land airfield on part of Bembridge Farm with the aim of meeting the
needs of private pilots. The landing ground was laid out in 1920 and was licensed for use in 1921.
During the 1920s the new airfield was used to give willing customers their first taste of flying and
those who could afford it would bring their own aircraft to Bembridge. One local man named Martin
formed a company called Martin Aviation Co., bought three ex RAF Renault-engined DH 6 biplanes.
for public “joy rides” and rented part of Bembridge airfield and conducted joy riding operations
from there. Mr Martin’s sales pitch was “enjoy the thrills of flight without the sound of enemy gun
fire”. It is known that at least two of the DH 6s owned by Martin Aviation, identified as G-EAWT and
G-EAWV, were flown from the field around Easter 1922.
The 1930s terminal building and booking office provided essential facilities for air services at Bembridge.

BEMBRIDGE BIG SOCIETY by Barry Dyer
Over the last few decades, one man has given selflessly to society
and we, Bembridge Business Association, would like to honour him,
Capt Graham Hall MBE.
Graham was born in Whitstable, Kent in 1939, for maintaining the navigational buoyage and
went to school in Canterbury, leaving at the age lighthouses around the country.

Manager of the Cowes Express catamaran
service which ran to Southampton.
Following the demise of the catamaran
service, Graham took over the Bembridge
Harbour Master’s job for a period of nine
years, during which time, among other things,
he was responsible for the erection of the
Harbour office and the production of the first
version of this guide. He is Chairman of the
Merchant Mariners of Wight and Treasurer and
counsellor for the Diabetic Society yet
still finds time to act as Race officer for the
local sailing club and is Chairman of the East
Wight Combined Clubs’ sailing committee. He
keeps a boat in the harbour and is taking great
pride in teaching his grandson the ropes.
Graham retired from his post with the RNLI
on 4 November 2011 and together with Eve
and daughters Rachel and Karen, received his
highly deserved MBE at Buckingham Palace on
15 November.
He will be a hard act to follow.

Harbour Master Chris Turvey:
On behalf of the Bembridge Harbour Company and its staff I would like to
welcome all visitors to Bembridge a safe and enjoyable stay. There are many
beautiful walks from and around the Harbour, which is a Site of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Duver Marina is the main mooring area for visiting yachtsmen. We have
approximately 100 visitor berths and 30+ permanent berths. Facilities on
this site include 2 water taxis which operates all year round, launching and
boatyard services. We have a large Marquee which is available throughout
the summer, free of charge, for Rally functions and smaller parties who want to have a late evening
without disturbing fellow yachtsmen. Adjacent to this there is a high quality BBQ big enough
to cook for 40+ people. We also have an “internet hotspot”, ask at the harbour office for details.
Bembridge Powerboat Training & Wight Charter operate from this marina. There are plans for
further development and improvement on this site, details will be available on our website www.
bembridgeharbour.co.uk
The Fisherman’s Marina formally Fisherman’s Wharf is being upgraded. It is the home of the
Bembridge fishing fleet which is famous for lobster and crab. There is space on this pontoon for
more than 60 permanent berths.
The Bembridge Marina home to 80 permanent berth holders has a taxi landing spot and is the
stop off for the Brading Haven Yacht Club. Fishing trips, run by Cachalot, leave regularly from the
northern pontoon. There are planned upgrades for this site, details will be available on our website.
Selwyn Marina formally known as Wades Pontoon has been upgraded with new pontoons and
shoreside facilities.
Fully serviced Trot Moorings are also available. They are arranged in trots with boats moored fore
and aft. All moorings are serviced by a water taxi to run mooring holders and there crew to and
from their boats. They also have full use of our showers and toilets and prices include Harbour Dues.
These moorings are being taken up fast, so please phone the office on 01983 872828 to reserve a
place.
Please visit our website www.bembridgeharbour.co.uk for additional information or speak to me, or

been a long and arduous task involving the
removal of many tons of accumulated earth but
when finished, will enable visitors on tours to
have a better idea of how the fort once looked

The Bembridge Heritage Society
The Bembridge Heritage Society was formed in 1996 to record and present the rich
history and heritage of Bembridge and its surrounding areas.
The exhibition covers many aspects ofVillage including a large collection of photographs
depicting life over the years. Our cabinets show many intriguing articles from war time
to a collection of 1950’s stationery and toys. Our models include Bembridge Station, the
restored Pill Box atYar Bridge and Bembridge Fort. Our original PLUTO pump creates a lot
of interest as do our own publications and videos which are on sale at the Centre.
Do come and visit us and help keep our Heritage for future generations.
