What Is Hard
Times?

Hard times in life refers to a period of great difficulty.
If you have fallen on hard times, you are going through a
terrible time, especially financially. Henry Ford once said
"Failure is only the opportunity more intelligently to begin
again". This can be applied to when we are facing hard times
and experiences in life. As we know, the Covid-19 pandemic
impacted all countries in various ways, particularly in the
employment industry. Malaysia is no exception in this
regard.

According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM),
the unemployment rate rose to 4.8 percent in June, following
four consecutive months of declines, with a total of 768,700
unemployed people in the country, based on its Labour Force
Survey. This is undoubtedly a difficult period for us to be in,
but we must believe that all of these difficulties are
opportunities for us to grow stronger.

1

Self-Efficacy
Improvement

So, the question is, how can hard times make us stronger? Can
we gain strength from it and make it better? Robert Schuller
(1954), an American author said, "Though times never last, but
tough people do." This proves that calamity and difficulty can
make you stronger, tougher and more successful. Hard times
teach us how to be a stronger person when we learn from the
past in improving our self-efficacy, develop empathy toward
others and most importantly being a positive people with a
mindset full with positivity when we go through tough times.

Difficult times in life make us stronger when we learn
how to build self-efficacy in ourselves. No matter whether
we are rich or poor, nice or unkind, good or cruel, and other
aspects. But we cannot deny that life is not meaningful.
Nobody becomes wealthy before becoming poor, they just
continue to learn and develop from their previous
experiences.

2

In addition, self-efficacy refers to a person's confidence
in his or her ability to handle out the actions required to
meet specific performance objectives (Albert Bandura, 1997).
The idea of self-efficacy emphasises the importance of social
experience and observational learning in the development of
personality. It can be said that our mastery experiences can
foster self-esteem and self-belief in ourselves, as well as self-
reliance. For example, when someone has to perform a
scripted performance in front of the audiences and he forget
the script and almost had a panic attack in the moment.
While it is a truly unpleasant experience, he survives and
that triggers his brain to think about other hard challenges
he could conquer. It simply demonstrates that when we
overcome adversity, we are able to acquire self-efficacy and
gain strength. On the whole, given that dealing with
adversity is the most effective approach to create self-
efficacy, this just shows how dealing with adversity may
make us stronger by making us more efficient, hence
enhancing self-efficacy growth.

3

Empathy?
What is it?

Other than that, we become stronger in facing hardship
when we acquire greater empathy for others. Empathy is a
highly regarded personality quality that is required for social
interactions. It is a necessary component in both professional
and personal life. Empathy cannot be taught, but it can be
caught, remarked Mary Gordon, an American author, in one
of her works. Empathy and compassion are critical
components of human well-being. In general, we love others
because we can relate with others (Szalavitz and Perry, 2010).
Empathy is described as the ability to put oneself in the shoes
of another. The concept of empathy relates to an individual's
cognitive and emotional responses to the perceived
experiences of another.

4

For instance, when we see a person struggling with their
exams, we can relate to him because we have been in that
situation before. That empathy in us come from our previous
experiences when we were struggling with our examinations.
It makes us want to help him more. So, when we endure
adversity, we learn how to be compassionate toward others
because we have experienced adversity ourselves. To
summarize, empathy, boosts one's chances of helping others
and expressing compassion. Tough events fortifies us by
teaching us empathy for others.

5

Finally we become stronger when we faced the hard times
positively. "Believe me, the reward is not so great without the
struggle" (Wilma Rudolph, 1956). From this statement, facing
the tough challenges make us believe that it is indeed fill
with positivity. Positive thinking simply means approaching
unpleasantness in a more positive and useful manner. We
expect the best, not the worst to happen. Self-talk is a
common starting point for positive thinking. Self-talk refers
to the never-ending stream of unsaid ideas that go through
our mind. For instance, when something awful happens to
someone, he tends to start thinking negatively and just sit
there holding the problem without thinking about the
solution, which almost can lead him to tension and
depression.

Based on a research done, depression affecting an estimated
3.8 percent of the population, including 5.0 percent of adults
and 5.7 percent of persons over the age of 60. Every year,
around 700,000 individuals commit suicide. (World Health
Organizations, 2021) Suicide is the fourth highest cause of
mortality among those aged 15 to 29. This facts are indeed
dangerous and harmful to our mental health.

6

But when we learn how to always stay positive in every
adversity from our past. To make it clear, when we conquer
adversity, we will discover that it all comes down to how you
think about things. Do you regard the glass as half full or half
empty? Optimists generally claim the glass is half-full,
whereas pessimists say it is half-empty. In a nutshell, we know
life is harsh, but we are tougher, going through adversity will
help us become stronger with this mindset. If things can't get
any worse, we'll have an optimistic attitude on life. “You've
reached the bottom. I'm sure I have. The only way to go is up!
”. Frankly, we need to believe that everything bad that has
happened to us happened for a good reason, and that we may
strengthen ourselves by being optimistic and thinking
positively through out difficult times. Be mindful, not
heedless.

7

LASTLY...

In conclusion, we have to believe in ourselves and cling on
to whatever is keeping us close. Strong people have a strong
sense of self-worth and self-awareness, they do not need the
approval of others. (Roy T. Bennett, 2017). Not everyone who
goes through adversity is broken, some are strengthened as a
result of it. The one who falls and gets up is stronger than the
one who never tried. We must not fear failure but rather fear
not trying. Said Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart.
Hopefully, we are all capable of using problems as a
springboard to leap higher, to become greater and more
powerful humans than we have ever been. Keep the spirit in
your life and continue to love the good in your charitable
efforts.

We all got through difficult times in our life. Nobody want it neither expect it to be
happened but we have no other ways to avoid it. What does "hard times" imply? If you've
fallen on hard times, you're going through a terrible time, especially . It can also allude to
difficult conditions in general, such as personal or health issues. In the singular, hard time
refers to a lengthy prison term or scolding someone.

THESIS STATEMENT

A wise man, Henry Ford once said “Failure is only the opportunity more to begin again.”
In other words, although the disappointment is tough to deal in the moment, failure can
ultimately lead to success because we learn and grow from the past. This can be applied to
when we are facing the hard times and experiences. Everything that happened have their
own reasons and benefits, and trust me that things do get better. This show that calamity
and difficulty can make us stronger, tougher and more successful. As Robert Schuller, an
American author said, “Though times never last, but tough people do.” But, how can hard
time make us stronger? Can we gain strength from it and make it better? This will be
discussed in this article.

PARAGRAPH 1

Aside from that, these difficult situations teach us how to be empathic. Empathy is a
highly regarded personality quality that is required for social interactions. It is a necessary
component in both professional and personal life. It is the skill or attribute to comprehend the
values, beliefs, and cultures of another. But how can hard times lead us to develop more
empathy in ourselves? "Empathy cannot be taught, but it can be caught." remarked Mary
Gordon, an American author, in one of her works. Empathy and compassion are critical
components of human well-being. We love because we can relate with others (Szalavitz and
Perry, 2010). Empathy is described as the ability to put oneself in the shoes of another.
When you see other people going through difficult times, you are aware of their sentiments
and needs since you have also been through their difficulties and tribulations, even though
they are strangers. The value of empathy is a fundamental idea that refers to an individual's
cognitive and emotional reactions to the observed experiences of another. Empathy
enhances the likelihood of assisting others and displaying compassion. In general, that just
reinforces the fact that struggle aids in the development of empathy for others. Tough times
not only make us stronger, but they also influence us into better people who learn from their
mistakes.

PARAGRAPH 2

Every one of us spends our lives in a different way. Rich or poor, nice or unkind, good or
cruel, and other aspects. But we can't deny that life isn't without hardships. Nobody becomes
wealthy before becoming poor, they just continue to learn and develop from their previous
experiences, which shape who they are now. That is why adversity fosters self-efficacy. Self-
efficacy refers to a person's confidence in his or her ability to handle out the actions required
to meet specific performance objectives (Albert Bandura, 1997). The idea of self-efficacy
emphasizes the importance of social experience and observational learning in the
development of personality. We begin to develop our senses through interacting with a wide
range of experiences, tasks, and circumstances. It continues to develop and learn new
abilities, experiences, and knowledge. Mastery experiences can foster self-efficacy. Failure
jeopardizes it, especially if it occurs before a strong sense of efficacy has been formed. In
short, considering that dealing with adversity is the most effective approach to improve self-
efficacy, this merely goes to illustrate how dealing with adversity may make us stronger and
more efficient.

PARAGRAPH 3

“Believe me, the reward is not so great without the struggle” (Wilma Rudolph, 1956).
From the sentences above, can't you deduce this woman's mindset from the phrases
above? Yes, you are correct. The remarks above just demonstrate how optimistic she is by
claiming that not all difficulties result in a poor outcome. Meanwhile, negative thinking might
make unpleasant situations appear inescapable and lead to anxiousness. As example, when
something awful happens to you, you tend to start thinking negatively and just sit there
holding your problem without thinking about the solution, which can lead to tension and
depression. But it will be different for those that always stay positive in every adversity.
Positive thinking does not imply burying your head in the sand and ignoring life's less
pleasant circumstances. Positive thinking simply means approaching unpleasantness in a
more positive and useful manner. You expect the best, not the worst to happen. When you
conquer adversity, you will discover that it all comes down to how you think about things. Do
you regard the glass as half full or half empty? Optimists generally claim the glass is half-full,
whereas pessimists usually say it's half-empty. Optimists tend to focus on the positive: there
is still water to drink. Pessimists, on the other hand, perceive only the negative, there is no
water in what could otherwise be a full glass. Because you know life is harsh, but you are
tougher, going through adversity will help you become stronger. If things can't get any worse,
you'll have an optimistic attitude on life. “You've reached the bottom. I'm sure I have. The

only way to go is up! ” As a result, I think that all negative things happen for a good cause,
which may strengthen us and keep us positive during difficult times.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we can say that you will face adversity in life. Things will happen that are
beyond your control, things that most people will find difficult to comprehend. So, when
you're being pushed to your breaking point, remember this: with every adversity comes
strength. All you have to do is believe in yourself and cling on to whatever is keeping you
close. Because not everyone who goes through adversity is broken; some are strengthened
as a result of it. Hopefully, we are all capable of using problems as a springboard to leap
higher, to become greater and more powerful humans than we have ever been. Keep the
Spirit in your life and continue to love the good in your charitable efforts.
