Pivotal point for stewardship

What a difference two years can make in the life of our church.

In autumn 2015, the Stewardship Committee shared with the congregation the blessings of David
Rives’ continuing leadership of our music programming, the challenges of finding a new director
for our children’s ministry, the anxious awaiting for Brian Edwards to arrive as our full-time
director for youth ministry, and the need to fully staff our pastoral team to ensure that members
would receive the care needed during critical moments in their lives.

Today, our church is fully staffed and thriving again as a place of worship, fellowship and mission
outreach. As pastor for discipleship, Tom Rice has breathed new life and energy into adult
education and mission. Betsy Rice, associate pastor for member ministries, is leading a revival and
expansion of the Stephen Ministry program. Wayne Morrison, parish associate for visitation, has
helped expand care and connection with members and their families during especially sensitive
moments in life. Jenni Whitford, director of children’s ministry, leads our youngest disciples with
creativity and energy. And Brian Edwards, in a full-time role as director of youth ministry, has
forged new paths for our junior and senior high youth.

This remarkable ministry team, led by Senior Pastor Julia Wharff Piermont, has been assembled
through the financial generosity of our congregation. In addition, several members made
extravagant supplemental gifts topping $48,000 annually for three years to put the church back on
an upward trajectory. Their extra financial commitments conclude in 2018.

Now, we find ourselves at a tipping point. Do we build upon the blessings that God has given us to
continue growing our robust mission and church programs, so that those less fortunate than us
can see the work of the Lord through our actions? To do so requires continued growth in our
average household giving.

Full information about this year’s stewardship program will be available in packets available for
pick-up in Hazelton Fellowship Hall for three consecutive Sundays beginning October 22. As you
begin to consider your 2018 level of giving, please remember that God calls each of us to do well,
be generous and share with others. Through your generosity, Worthington Presbyterian Church
will be able to sustain into the future what we have worked so hard together in the past two years
to accomplish.

In Christ,
Your Stewardship Committee: Linda Barber, Mary Brake, Michael Farley, Doug Haddix (chair), David Isler,
Brad Montgomery, Julia Wharff Piermont, Jeff White
