PREFACE It is with great pleasure and pride that we present the Annual Report of the Green Educators’ Workgroup Penang (GREW) for the 2023 fiscal year. This report encapsulates our collective efforts, achievements, impacts, challenges, and aspirations in promoting environmental sustainability and fostering green education within our community. As we reflect on the past year, we are reminded of the pivotal role that education plays in shaping attitudes, behaviors, and practices towards the environment. In line with our mission to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship, our workgroup has been dedicated to advancing innovative and impactful initiatives that empower educators, students, and stakeholders to embrace sustainable practices. Throughout the 2023, we have organized a diverse array of programs, workshops, seminars, and outreach activities aimed at raising awareness, building capacity, and driving positive change. From teacher training to community engagement and advocacy campaigns, our endeavors have sought to integrate environmental principles into the fabric of education and inspire a generation of environmentally conscious citizens. We are grateful for the unwavering support of our partners, collaborators, volunteers, and sponsors, whose contributions have been instrumental in the success of our endeavors. Together, we have forged meaningful partnerships, leveraged resources, and mobilized collective action to address pressing environmental challenges and promote a greener, more sustainable future for Penang and beyond. We are also pleased to have nearly 60% of schools in Penang involved in our programmes and involved around 21 000 students over the years. As we look ahead, we are excited about the opportunities and possibilities that lie on the horizon. Building on the momentum of our past achievements, we are committed to expanding our reach, deepening our impact, and driving continuous improvement in our programs and initiatives. We remain steadfast in our dedication to nurturing a generation of eco-literate and environmentally responsible citizens who are equipped to address the complex environmental issues of our time. In closing, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all who have contributed to the success of the Green Educators’ Workgroup Penang. JOURNEY OF GREW The 1st Penang Eco-Schools camp was held from February 21st to 23rd, 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic. During this 3-day, 2-night camp, green educators in Penang met for the first time to discuss further collaboration in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the EcoSchools Programme. The International Best Practices Sharing Session marked the first collaboration among SMK Convent Pulau Tikus, SJKC Union, and SJKC Eok Hua. Nearly 1,180 students from 108 primary and secondary schools across Malaysia, teacher trainee colleges and universities, as well as educators and students from the UK, the Philippines, and Turkey, participated online. Jerome, Yee Chen, and Soon Yeong meet regularly to discuss how to involve more schools in Penang in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), particularly focusing on the Eco-Schools Programme. After some time, they successfully turned their passion into reality by establishing the Green Educators' Workgroup in Penang. The Inaugural General Meeting (IGM) took place on April 11, 2021, marking the beginning of the GREW journey as an NGO. Advisors from IPG, USM, schools, and committee members from JPNPP, as well as representatives from both primary and secondary schools, contributed to the success of the meeting. After almost 2 months of the registration process with Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan Malaysia, we finally received approval on June 5, 2021 (Wednesday), coinciding with World Environment Day. This marks a great start and a memorable day for us. 5

“If content is king, then conversion is queen.” John Munsell, CEO of Bizzuka SDGs IMPACT REPORT Expand and inform community in Penang about the progress of GREW's work. Highlight the importance of Education Sustainable Development . Encourage the community to support environmental education and conservation efforts in Penang. Project Overview Organiser Theme : Education for Sustainable Development Date : 31 May 2023 (Wednesday) Location: Penang Institute, George Town Time : 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. PENANG INSTITUTE CHATS EDUCATIONFOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (ESD) In 2021, several primary and secondary school teachers who care about green education co-founded GREW (Green Educators’ Workgroup). The background of its establishment comes from the fact that primary and secondary school teachers in Penang who cared about green education at that time often had to work alone, which made it difficult to effectively continue green education in schools. The establishment of GREW has connected school teachers, NGO organizations and people with lofty ideals in the public sector who share common goals, and has become a platform for exchanges, discussions and resource sharing. Only two years after its establishment, GREW has already achieved rich results. The people they contact and communicate with are not limited to primary and secondary schools, but also college students, and they even make suggestions on relevant policies. In this episode, let us listen to the process, challenges and future prospects of several co-founders! 39
