Dear Members, Partners, and Friends,It is with great pride and gratitude that my team and I present the Green Educators’Workgroup Penang Annual Report for 2024. This year has been one of remarkablegrowth, innovation, and impact, as we continued our mission to inspire sustainablepractices and environmental stewardship within our educational community.The challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation areundeniably pressing. Yet, in these challenges, we have found opportunities to empowereducators, engage students, and foster collaborations that champion the values ofsustainability. From implementing eco-friendly initiatives in schools to hosting workshopsthat spark meaningful discussions, our efforts this year have been guided by a sharedvision of a greener future.Among our many achievements, I would like to highlight our involvement in promotingIntegration of ESD in lesson which involved more than 200 teachers, World Cleanup Dayinvolved 7000 participants and many more. These milestones reflect not only thededication of our team but also the unwavering support of our members and partnerswho share our commitment to sustainable education.As we look ahead, the path is clear: we must continue to lead by example, innovateboldly, and collaborate widely. The seeds we plant today in the hearts and minds of ourstudents will grow into the forests of tomorrow—a legacy of hope, resilience, andharmony with nature.On behalf of the Green Educators’ Workgroup Penang, I extend my deepest gratitudeto every individual who has contributed to our cause this year. Additionally, GREW promotesquality Education for SustainableDevelopment (ESD) within schools andinstitutions.GREW empowers teenagers and youthinvolved as volunteers through GREWHeroes to work closely with the GREWCommittee to address environmentalissues and enhance effective planningand implementation skills in ESDrelated programs.GREW also organizes programs that providejob opportunities for B40 families andcontribute to sustaining our environment,aligning with SDGs Goals.These are goals that we're working on based on our organisation key strategies for the year.3
The 1st Penang Eco-Schools camp was held fromFebruary 21st to 23rd, 2020, before the Covid-19pandemic. During this 3-day, 2-night camp, greeneducators in Penang met for the first time todiscuss further collaboration in Education forSustainable Development (ESD) and the EcoSchools Programme.The International Best Practices Sharing Sessionmarked the first collaboration among SMK ConventPulau Tikus, SJKC Union, and SJKC Eok Hua. Nearly1,180 students from 108 primary and secondaryschools across Malaysia, teacher trainee colleges anduniversities, as well as educators and students fromthe UK, the Philippines, and Turkey, participated online.Jerome, Yee Chen, and Soon Yeong meet regularlyto discuss how to involve more schools in Penangin Education for Sustainable Development (ESD),particularly focusing on the Eco-SchoolsProgramme. After some time, they successfullyturned their passion into reality by establishing theGreen Educators' Workgroup in Penang.The Inaugural General Meeting (IGM) took place onApril 11, 2021, marking the beginning of the GREWjourney as an NGO. Advisors from IPG, USM, schools,and committee members from JPNPP, as well asrepresentatives from both primary and secondaryschools, contributed to the success of the meeting.Journey of GREW4
On May 23, 2023, the GREW Sustainable Resource Centre(GSRC) was inaugurated by YB Phee Boon Poh, the EXCOfor Environment & Welfare. This center provided aphysical space for educators to share ideas, resources,and strategies for integrating sustainability into theirteaching practices. The GSRC aimed to support the UN2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aligning localeducational efforts with global sustainability goals.Another important expansion came with theinauguration of the GREW Sustainable CommunityCentre (GSCC) on September 1, 2023. Officiated byYB Steven Sim Chee Keong, the Deputy Minister ofFinance II, this new facility underscored GREW’scommitment to extending its educational initiativesbeyond schools and into local communities. TheGSCC served as a platform for community outreach,empowering citizens and local organizations toembrace sustainability in their daily lives.After almost 2 months of the registration processwith Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan Malaysia, wefinally received approval on June 5, 2021(Wednesday), coinciding with World EnvironmentDay. This marks a great start and a memorable dayfor us.GREW Heroes officially launched on July 23, 2022,at SMK Datuk Onn Butterworth, with Mr. Chew EngSeng, MBSP Local Agenda 21 officer, officiating theevent. This milestone reflected the culmination ofefforts by Jerome and Soon Yeong to engage theyounger generation and empower them tocontribute toward creating a more sustainablefuture.5
In 2023, GREW successfully organized the WorldCleanup Day event, mobilizing over 10,000 studentsfrom 85 primary and secondary schools acrossMalaysia. This massive volunteer-driven initiative wasaimed at cleaning up local environments while raisingawareness about the importance of wastemanagement and environmental conservation. Theevent’s success earned GREW the Best NGO Awardduring the World Cleanup Day 2023 in Malaysia.The inaugural Conference on SustainableDevelopment through Education Malaysia(COSDEM) 2024, organized by the GREW, marks asignificant step towards integrating sustainabilityinto the educational framework of Malaysia. Thisgroundbreaking conference will be officiated by Mr.Chan Ming Kai, the Political Secretary to the PrimeMinister of Malaysia, underscoring the event'simportance and the government's support forsustainable development initiatives.For the first time, GREW published the book MyJourney in Education for SustainableDevelopment in 2023. This publication served asboth a reference and a motivational guide foreducators looking to implement ESD in theirclassrooms. It included best practices, successstories, and practical tips to help educatorsmake a positive impact on their students andcommunities.On September 23, 2023, GREW organized its firstCarnival for Education for SustainableDevelopment (ESD). The event, officiated byMalaysian Minister of Education, YB FadhlinaSidek, provided a platform for students andeducators to engage with sustainability throughworkshops, exhibitions, and discussions. Thecarnival was a milestone in GREW’s efforts topromote ESD nationwide and foster a deeperunderstanding of sustainability among theyounger generation.6
GREW launched a reference book titled LessonIdeas: Education for Sustainable Development inMalaysia to empower educators to integrate ESDprinciples into the Malaysian education system.Aligning with the national curriculum and SDGs,this resource provides practical approaches,fostering a generation committed tosustainability and positive community impact.As part of its ongoing efforts to fosterinternational collaboration, GREW embarked onits first international field trip to Tongyeong,South Korea, in November 2024, in conjunctionwith the 15th Tongyeong ESD InternationalForum, themed 'Bridging All Education to ExploreNew Directions for a Sustainable Future.' Thisfield trip provided Malaysian educators with theopportunity to learn from global best practices insustainability education.The Education for Sustainable Development LearningHub (ESD Learning Hub) was officially inauguratedon June 8, 2024, by YB Lee Khai Loon, the stateassemblyman of Machang Bubok. This hub aims tointegrate ESD more deeply into Malaysian schoolcurriculam by offering resources, training, and acollaborative space for educators to innovate andshare ideas.TYT Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and PenangChief Minister Y.A.B. Chow Kon Yeow participatedfor the first time in the Penang World Cleanup Day2024. GREW was recognized by the Penang GreenCouncil at the Green Pinang Awards PresentationCeremony 2024 under the Penang GreenIncentive category for event planners whoorganized events and took extra steps to reducetheir environmental footprint, thereby achievingsustainability.7
GREW proudly published its first three researchpapers addressing critical global and local issues,focusing on food waste and environmental concernsin Penang. Presented at the MySDG Conference2024, these studies underscored the importance ofbuilding resilience and empowering communities toactively contribute to achieving the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs).In 2024, GREW organized its first live teaching sessionon ESD. Through the direct involvement of teachers,we were able to raise their awareness ofenvironmental issues and strengthen their capacity tosupport sustainable development. This activity alsobridged classroom learning with real-life realities andthe global SDG goals.8
