FOREWORD
KHOU JEROME, CHAIRPERSON OF GREEN EDUCATORS' WORKGROUP PENANG
As being mentioned by Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can
use to change the world." Therefore, we as educators are obligated to educate children
and teenagers who are the future generations to concern and care for the environment.
The fact is, to see the impacts to the society, it cannot be achieved if only a few schools
and educators are involved as it needs to be synergized and move in the same direction.
We have been discussing on environmental education over the years and sought to
increase understanding of ecological crisis and to catalyse individuals and societal action
for environmental protection. Yet now, the elaboration and conceptual of it has deepened
to a more recent tributaries which is Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In
ESD, we look at it in a more holistic perspective on environmental education which
encompasses the complex interrelationships between environment and the social,
economic, cultural and political dimensions of life and societies. This is the direction of
education, whereby our workgroup strongly promotes it to schools, with the hope that it
would be able to provide quality education that would help to make the world a better
place.
Making the world a better place isn't just a dream, but it requires actions rather than
words. Therefore, Green Educators' Workgroup was formed and to move as a family in
ESD, influencing each other, exchanging resources and skills, building relationships,
sharing opportunities and most importantly is bringing impacts to the schools not only in
Penang, but also to other states in Malaysia as well as schools abroad.
As the chairperson, I am so proud and honoured to have a very strong team who is
willing to spend their time, sacrifice their rest time and as a result, had successfully
organised 29 programmes and projects in a year. Furthermore, all these programmes
were also aligned with what we uphold to, which is the quality ESD programme that can
bring impacts directly or indirectly to the students. All the details of the programmes and
activities have been complied in this annual report systematically. The amazing part is
that we had just been established about a year ago but we have nearly 40 stakeholders
who are working closely with us. As such, I would to express my gratitude to all of them for
their support and trust. Nevertheless, a big shout out to the GREW Core Team, Advisors,
Committee and all GREW Family members, all of you are amazing and let's bring more
impacts through ESD in the year 2023!
Bravo!

Our Journey Into GREW
The 1st Penang Eco-Schools camp was held on 21st to 23rd
of February 2020 before the Covid-19 Pandemic. In this 3
day-2 night-camp, the green educators in Penang met for the
first time to discuss on further collaboration in ESD and Eco-
Schools Programme.
International Best Practices Sharing Session was the first
collaboration among SMK Convent Pulau Tikus, SJKC Union
and SJKC Eok Hua. Nearly 1,180 students from 108 primary
and secondary schools from all over Malaysia, teachers’
trainee colleges and universities, as well as teachers and
students from the UK, the Philippines and Turkey,
participated online.
Jerome, Yee Chen and Soon Yeong meet regularly to
discuss the issue on how to involve more and more
schools in Penang concerning Education on
Sustainable Development (ESD) and especially on the
Eco-Schools Programme. After some time, they
managed to turn their passion into a reality by
successfully setting up Green Educators' Workgroup in
Penang.
Inaugural General Meeting (IGM) was carried out on 11
April 2021 to kick start the GREW journey as an NGO.
Advisors from IPG, USM, Schools and Committee
members from JPNPP and both primary and secondary
schools made the meeting a success.
After almost 2 months of the registration process with
Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan Malaysia, finally we
managed to get the approval on 5 June 2021 (WED)
which coincided with the World Environment Day. This is
a great start and a good day to remember.

addressing environmental issues happening in Malaysia.
The visit to FIKS made us excited by their hard work and creativity to promote recycling KitFaarsSikeimti uInlaov(FaIsKiS)
practices in an effort to preserve the environment. There are many facilities available, including
HUB ILMU, 3R BOUTIQUE, RECYCLING CENTER, KOC ILMU and KOC Kreative. Not only that, they 8 June 2022

The goal of the visit was for us to benchmark and gain environmental knowledge on PriSvrai tBeeSsctahroiol
how they develop their creativity and innovation to achieve the green flag award.
Besides, we also shared each other's ideas and experiences on how to expand the 9 June 2022
project for the future generation. The school harvested and planted paddy plants; a
beautiful biodiversity garden; upcycled clothes and they use papers certified by FSC to
make sure there's no illegal sources that would harm the environment.
We really admire and appreciate their initiatives to sustain a green environment for the future KitFaarsSikeimti uInlaov(FaIsKiS)
generations through various activities. This does not only influence the young people but the
older generations to engage themselves in this mission full heartedly. We believe that by joining 9 June 2022
