PREFACE


This booklet presents and introduces all of the medals and decora­
tions of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces.

All of these medals and decorations are created and awarded by the
Republic of Vietnam Chief of State ttl individuals for their achievements
or service to the Country or the Armed Forces.

Article 61 Section I, of the Constitution of the Republic of Vietnam,

dated 1 April 19,67, stipulates that: (( The President of th.e RepubI"lC f

Since the Republic of Vietnam has received assistance from .Allied
Nall·ons, the President of the Republic of Vietnam has . concurred 10 ht'hhe
award of Republic of Vietnam medals, including the NatIonal Order w lC
is the highest medal of this country, to all foreign mililary pers~nnel and
civilians for their exceptional contributions in the struggle agalnst Com­

munist ag~ression and in the building of a powerful Vietnam.

• The highest medals of the Republic of Vietnam and the Re~ublic of

Vietnam Armed Forces, such as : the National Order, Military Mer.lt Medal.
Army Distinguished Service Order, Air Force Distinguished S.ervlce Order
and Navy Distinguished Service Order are also intende.d for Ch1efs o~ State,
important key personalities and General Officers of fnendly countnes, for
diplomatic reasons.

a. Basic Documents:

b. Purpose:

The National Order is awarded or posthumously awarded to individuals who
have distinguished themselves by outstanding achievements, exceptional service, !acri­
lice, heroism, noble attitude, or extraordinary talent that reflect freat credit on or i!
beneficial to the CDuntry.

The National Order is also intended for RVNAF units, legally established orga·
nizationJ, and administrative units that display sacrifice and heroilm or accomplish
brilliant achieveTTJ..ents.

In addition, the National Order may be granted to Non-Vietnamese citizens for
diplomatic reasons.

c. Classes:

• The National Order has five classes:

National Order, Grand Cross or First Class.

National Order, Grand Officer or Second Class.

National Order, Commander or Third Class.

National Order, Officer or Fourth Class.

National Orier, Knight or Fifth Class.


d. Awarding Authorities:

The President of the Republic of Viet Nam awards the National Ordtr of

all classes.

The Prime Minister is empowered to award the National Order, Fourth Class,

and posthumously award the National Order, Third Class.

The Minister of National Defense is delegated the authority to award the

National Order, Fifth Class, and posthumously award the National Order,

Fourth Class.

The Chief of Joint General Staff, RVNAF, is empowered to posthumously award
the National Order, Fifth Class.

b. Purpose:

The Military Merit Medal is awarded or posthumously awarded to Non.Commis­
sioned Officers (including Aspirants) and Enlisted Men in the Armed Forces, who have:

- Previously received citations at the Armed Forces level.
- Been wounded one or many times in combat.
- Distinguished themselves by their heroic actions.
- Served in an honorable manner for at least I3 years.
The Military Merit Medal may be awarded or posthumously awarded to Allied
Non-Commissioned Officers and Enlisted Men for valor while fighting in the Republic
of Vietnam.
The Military Merit Medal may also be presented to Chiefs of State, Marshals
of friendly countries and General Officers who have held a position as Commander
In.Chief in the Republic of Vietnam.

c. Class:

The Military Merit Medal has only one class.

d. Awarding Authorities:

- The Minister of National Defense.
- The Chief of Joint General Staff, RVNAF, is empowered to posthumously award

the Military Merit Medal.

a. Basic Documents:

b. Purpose:

The Army Distinguished Service Order I'S awarded or posthumously awarded to
Army Officers who meet one of the following requirements:
- Have been cited or wounded many times in combat or in line of duty.
_ Have accomplished exceptionally important achievements that reflect great credit on,

or isbeneficial to the Army of the RVNAF in any field.
Th Army Distinguished Service Order is also intended for Infantry Units an~

GeneraleOfficers in other armed servI.ces who have accomp1"IShed an achievement that IS
exceptionally important and beneficial to the Republic of Vietnam Army.

The Army Distinguished Service Order may be awarded to foreigners for their
meritorious service to the RVN Army or for diplomatic reasons.

c. Classes:

The Army Distinguihed Service Order has two classes:

_ Army Distinguished Service Order, First Class.

_ Army Distinguished Service Order, Second Class.

NAVY DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER:


a. Basic Documents:

Decree NO I8z/SL/CT, :; June I9 64·
Decree NO zo:;/CT/LDQG/ SL, z December I9 65·

b. Purpose:

The Navy Distinguished Service Order is awarded or prsthumously awarded 10
Officers in the RVN Navy who meet one of the following requirements:

Have been cited or wounded many times in combat or in line of duty.
Have accomplished an exceptionally important achievement that reflects great
credit on, or is beneficial to the RVN Navy in any field.
The Navy Distinguished Service Order is also intended for Navy units and General
Officers in other armed services, who have distinguished themselves by an exceptionally
important achievement that is beneficial to the RVN Navy.
The Navy Distinguishecf Service Order may be presented to foreigners for their
meritorious service to the RVN Navy, or for diplomatic reasons.

c. Classes:

The Navy Distinguished Service Order has two classes:
Navy Distinguished Service Order, First Class.

- Navy Distinguished Service Order, Second Class.

Awarding Authorities:

The Minister of National Defense.

The Chief of Joint General Staff, RVNAF (for posthumous award).

The Army Meritorious Service Medal is awarded or posthumoudy awarded to
Non_Commissioned Officers and Enlisted Men in the Republic of Vietnam Army
who have served in the Army and meet one of the following requirements :

Have been cited or wounded many times in combat or in line of duty.
Have accomplished an exceptionally important achievement that reflects
great credit ont or is beneficial to the Republic of Vietnam Army in any field.
The Army Meritorious Service Medal is also irrtended for foreign Non-Com.
missioned Officers and Enlisted Men for their meritorious service to the Republic
of Vietnam Army.

b. Purpose:

The Air Force Meritorious Service Medal is awarded or posthumously awarded to
Non-Commissioned Officer~ and Enlisted Men in the Republic of Vietnam Air Force,.
who have served in the Air Force and meet one of the following requirements :

Have been cited or wounded many times in combat or in line of duty.
Have accomplished an exceptionally important achievement that reflects great
crtdit on, or beneficial to the RVN Air Force in any field.
The Air Force Meritorious Sevice Medal is also intended for foreign Non-Com­
