NOVEL PERSONAL RESPONSE
BA LESSON LEARNT FROM THE NOVEL DEAR MR. KILMER
ased on the novel Dear Mr. Kilmer penned by Anne Schraff, the lesson that I have learned is determination. Richard Knight as one of the main characters in the novel has portrayed his determination to overcome
obstacles in order to achieve something. From him, I’ve learned about determination and that lesson undeniably could be applied in my life.
From the novel, I’ve learned that I need to have a strong determination in order to stand firm on what I believe in. I should have my own principles in life. Some times, other people may not agree with what I believe in. In the novel, Richard showed his determination not to kill animals when he went hunting with his Pa and elder brother, Gus. They were excited to see Richard kill his first buck. However, Richard purposely missed the buck even though he had a clear shot. This is because he thought that killing wild animals is wrong and he disliked hunting. After Richard talked to Pa about how he felt about hunting, Pa told Richard that he didn’t have to join them for hunting anymore. Gus thought that he should pick up hunting because Richard could be popular like him and have more friends. However, Richard has decided to confessed that he didn’t enjoy hunting. He was determined not to be involved with that activity. He preferred writing poetry instead. From this event we know that Richard is determined to not kill wild animals and he stood firm in his belief even though his family wanted him to do it. As a student and a son, I have to set my priorities right. I should also understand what my responsibilities are. For instance, I will be sitting for my big exam this
year. Therefore, in order to get a good result, I should plan my time wisely and avoid from being involved in any discipline case. If my friends invited me to join them to play truant, I should turn down their invitation. Instead, I should advise them not to be involved in any negative activity.
In addition, I’ve also learned that determination is needed especially to show support for our friends who are facing problems. In the novel, Richard is determined to support what is right and isn’t afraid of being different from everyone

else. This could be seen when Mrs. Hansen brought a sympathy card to show a sense of regret of what happened to the Schermer’s tavern that got vandalised. Richard was the only one who signed the card and volunteered to deliver the card to Hannah in person to show a sense of sincerity. The boys in the class were afraid of Harry Carver and Abner Lewis, the troublemakers. For the girls, they were afraid that the popular girls like Blanche and Peggy wouldn’t speak to them. On his way to deliver the sympathy card, Richard encountered the two troublemakers who were about to harass him. To their surprise, Richard fought back and taught them both a lesson to not mess with him ever again. Hannah was reluctant to receive the card but eventually did so. Hannah apologized for being rude. That was the beginning of their friendship. Napolean Bonaparte once said “The world suffers a lot not because the violence of bad people but the silence of good people”. In a class, a small number of bullies is enough to threaten the other students just because they look physically bigger, or their words are rougher. That doesn’t mean we should be afraid of them. In my opinion, we should stand up against bullies and report to the school authorities to ensure their safety in school. We should also show support for our friends who are being bullied or discriminated by others.
Last but not least, I’ve learned that determination is needed in order to achieve our ambition. In the novel, Richard was determined to pursuit his interest and he had a tough time letting people know that he wrote poems. The residents of Turtle Lake have the mind set that people who wrote poems are sissies. His elder brother, Gus didn’t want to be related to a
brother who wrote poem as he was ashamed that others will make fun of him. He even called Richard a sissy. At first, Richard had to keep it a secret from his family and friends that he wrote poems. After exchanging letters with Mr. Kilmer, he eventually has the determination to share his poems with other people. Richard even mentioned that he exchanged letters with a famous poet named Joyce Kilmer. Gus didn’t believe Joyce Kilmer was famous. Mrs. Hansen asked Richard to read his poem in front of his classmates. Some of his classmates were surprised to know that Richard had a talent in writing. Some of his classmates respected him after that. After the demise of Mr. Kilmer, Richard wrote the poem ‘In memory of Sergeant Kilmer’ and it was published in the Turtle Lake Weekly. Only then Pa started to understand Richard. Pa began liking Richard’s poems and at the same time reminiscing the death of his brother, Roland. Pa then encouraged Richard to keep on writing poems. We should too be determined on doing what we like. For me, my parents hated sports and always discourage me from doing outdoor activities. Eventually I changed their minds as I managed to show them what I’m capable of when I’m on the track, running with all my might, or when I’m in the basketball court where I play with all my heart.
In a nut shell, we should have a sense of determination to climb over obstacles in life and achieve the impossible. I think that Richard Knight is a good example for the youngsters. I know I must set my goals in life and I’m determined to achieve my goals by being positive and not to give up easily. I hope I can be a good and successful person one day.
