Workshop
The Alexander Technique for Flutists
(Session 1)
with Marian Goldberg
http://www.alexandercenter.com
Saturday, February 20
9:00 am - 9:50 am, Room 3
The Alexander Technique provides the flutist with an
exceptionally effective and comprehensive means to
change ingrained tension habits that interfere with optimal
playing and coordination. This workshop looks at how to
change automatic response patterns that are the basis for
undue tension habits, and at how the mind-body
system works as an integrated whole to play the flute.
This introduction includes individual “mini-lessons” and
group activities to develop understanding of how these
fundamentals can provide for healthier and more efficient
breathing, balance, movement, and support.
Workshop
Moyse Trifecta
with Shelley Binder
Saturday, February 20
9:00 am - 9:50 am, Room 10
This workshop covers Moyse’s De La Sonorite, 24 Small
Melodious Studies and Tone Development Through
Interpretation. Binder will discuss how these three
books taught her everything about tone and technique
from developing a concept of tone to getting and staying
in shape. These three iconic books are almost always
found in every flutist's library but they are often practiced
incorrectly or not at all. A revisiting for some and a
revelation for others, this is a presentation of correct
ways to use these books as intended.

several pedagogical exercises that are known to be
fundamental to the teaching of Kincaid, Baker, and
Baxtresser.

"Music Mind Games" is a fun way to teach music theory
that was developed by Michiko Yurko. It covers every
aspect of music theory from rhythm, scales and chords,
note reading to musical terms and definitions. The games
are used to teach theory concepts as well as reinforce
what has been taught. This workshop will introduce Music
Mind Games and suggest ways that teachers can use it in
both private studio and group/camp settings. The games
presented will cover various music theory topics, and
participants will have the chance to try them out in an
interactive setting.

Routine

The life of an active flutist requires us to play the piccolo,
regardless of our comfort level with the instrument. Creating a
practice routine for the piccolo that suits our individual needs is
an important part of becoming more comfortable with the
instrument. This workshop will present an approach to help
participants develop an individually suited piccolo practice
routine. This presentation is applicable to piccolo players of all
ages and abilities and is meant to be useful for both students
and teachers. Topics covered will include: books and materials;
strategies for creating piccolo endurance; use of hearing
protection; a sample piccolo “workout”; and helpful tips to
combat the most common piccolo playing issues. Attendees will
be encouraged to play their piccolos during the introduction of
the sample workout. Both beginners and seasoned piccolo
players will walk away with new practice strategies.

Introduction to Iyengar Yoga
with Juliana Fair
http://www.unitywoods.com/yoga-teachers/juliana-fair/
Sunday, February 21
9:45 am - 10:35 am, Room 3
One of the world’s most widely practiced forms of yoga,
Iyengar Yoga emphasizes alignment of body, breath,
mind, and spirit within each pose. It is based on the
teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, who brought yoga to the
West with his pioneering approach to teaching that
enables everyone-regardless of age, strength, or
flexibility-to benefit from the study and practice of yoga.
Noted for its precision, the Iyengar approach builds
strength and stamina, promotes balance and flexibility,
avoids injury, and maximizes benefits. As a basic
introduction, this workshop will address the interplay of
muscles involved in playing the flute and will include
asanas (poses) that encourage opening of the chest,
flexibility of the shoulders, coordination with the breath,
and more. No previous yoga experience required. No
special clothing required. Props will be supplied, but you
are welcome to bring a yoga mat if you have one.

Workshop
Working with the Breath: The Art and Practice of
Pranayama (Yoga Breathing Techniques)
with Lori Ritland
(Introduction by Nancy Henderson)
http://www.unitywoods.com/yoga-teachers/lori-l-ritland/
Sunday, February 21
11:00 am - 11:50 am, Room 3
This workshop will introduce the basic philosophy and
techniques of Pranayama. In yoga, Pranayama is the
practice of prolonging and refining inhalation and
exhalation, learning to work with the breath, through
practice, intention, and awareness. Building control,
support, and understanding of the breath is vitally
important for the flutist, and the practice of pranayama
can be helpful in many ways. For example, it promotes
the ability to move the air evenly, without pushing; to
produce a rich quality of sound; and to focus the mind. No
previous yoga experience required.
No special clothing required. Blankets will be provided for
support while reclining. If possible, bring a sweater or
towel for head support.
Lecture/Recital
The Essence of Mei(冥): Exploring the Inspiration
Behind Fukushima’s Mei
with Mihoko Watanabe
Sunday, February 21
11:00 am - 11:50 am, Room 6
This lecture recital will describe Japanese traditional music
influences in Kazuo Fukushima’s Mei, which is one of the
important standard repertoire pieces for unaccompanied
flute. Many flutists believe it was influenced by
Shakuhachi; however, according to Watanabe’s personal
interview with the composer, this was not the case.
Watanabe will explain the true Japanese influences on
Mei, using PowerPoint, demonstration on the Japanese
Traditional Instrument, recording, and the performance of
Mei on the modern flute.
