for flute while introducing the audience to his
compositional style, techniques, and influences.

Workshop
Finding Our Inner Voices as Flutists
with Nicole Riner
Sunday, February 21
2:45 pm - 3:35 pm, Room 9
There is a long history (perhaps starting with Quantz!) of
comparing flute playing to singing; the great opera house
flutists, from Taffanel and Moyse to Wion, all espoused
the idea that the flute should imitate the human voice in
sound and musicianship. But how does one achieve this
effect? This presentation will share physical warm-ups
and vocalises borrowed from vocal repertoire in order to
develop tone and musicianship. Riner will also introduce
some of her own transcriptions of voice pieces. Materials
will be performed together or by volunteers from the
audience, and best pedagogical practices will be discussed
throughout the session. Hand-outs will also be available
for use in the private studio.
Bring your flute!
